Susan G. Komen Loses Support After Planned Parenthood Decision
-----------------
It appears that Susan G. Komen for the cure, the [once] respected breast cancer research & advocacy group that funds all sorts of projects & organizations w/ grants, including planned parenthood (which in turn provides free breast cancer screenings to MILLIONS of women who otherwise would have no access to them) has now caved in to the far right anti-abortion pressure & pulled funding from planned parenthood.
the shockwaves are still reverberating all over from this questionable descision.
the top exec who put this descision into action is a woman who had avowed ties to far right wing ideology & came in loudly declaring her belief that SGK should sever ties to Planned Parenthood even though its been a long standing enforced agreement that NONE of the $600k SGK provides PP goes to any abortion procedures (& documentation prooves that agreement has been honored). Now that SGK has made this highly questionable descision, they are losing support left & right & the backlash is growing.
It should be noted that only 3% of PP's overall funding goes to performing abortion procedures & that they are in fact NOT operating "abortion mills" that the right likes to suggest.
I personally have had issues w/ PP given their past but I can't deny that they do such good work for millions of ppl who otherwise would not have any access to any basic health services. This just seems wrong to me.
what are your thoughts on this?
