Susan G. Komen Loses Support After Planned Parenthood Decision

-----------------

It appears that Susan G. Komen for the cure, the [once] respected breast cancer research & advocacy group that funds all sorts of projects & organizations w/ grants, including planned parenthood (which in turn provides free breast cancer screenings to MILLIONS of women who otherwise would have no access to them) has now caved in to the far right anti-abortion pressure & pulled funding from planned parenthood.

the shockwaves are still reverberating all over from this questionable descision.

the top exec who put this descision into action is a woman who had avowed ties to far right wing ideology & came in loudly declaring her belief that SGK should sever ties to Planned Parenthood even though its been a long standing enforced agreement that NONE of the $600k SGK provides PP goes to any abortion procedures (& documentation prooves that agreement has been honored). Now that SGK has made this highly questionable descision, they are losing support left & right & the backlash is growing.

It should be noted that only 3% of PP's overall funding goes to performing abortion procedures & that they are in fact NOT operating "abortion mills" that the right likes to suggest.

I personally have had issues w/ PP given their past but I can't deny that they do such good work for millions of ppl who otherwise would not have any access to any basic health services. This just seems wrong to me.

what are your thoughts on this?

It is a shame. This has become an abortion fight, with the REAL victims being the poor women who get mammograms only through PP.

Michale Bloomberg, billionaire mayor of NYC, has pledged 250K to PP. Good for him.

Reps. Barbara Boxer & Jackie Spier (a jonestown massacre survivor)have publicly denounced SGK & pulled their funding.

I am REALLY distraught by this the more i read/listen to it. WTF is wrong w/ Nancy (the sister of the foundations namesake) & Karen Helder for doing this!? they're letting their far right ideology take this entity WAY off track & now...MILLIONS of women who would not otherwise have access to even BASIC health services will be in jeopardy b/c of this!

the irony is that these two call themselves "pro life"....<<FAMILY FEUD BUZZER>>

They have changed stance, bowing to pressure. I do not have the news link but I know that to be the case.

I would still be wary of supporting them as long as I know the people in charge are the same. They can always change their mnds again and very well might, especially if this Rep in Congress digs up the least little thing on PP.

Media got it wrong

Media Gets It Wrong, Komen Didnt Actually Reverse Decision About Planned Parenthood | Addicting Info

----------------------------

I knew something wasnt right. I read the statement released by Komen's spokeswoman earlier today & the language of it was not quite in line w/ the assertion that they 'reversed the descision' a few other smaller media outlets were cautioning ppl on this as well saying that SGK really wasnt reversing anything but rather doing spin.

They're essentially doing what they planned to do. NOT GIVE PP ANYMORE FUNDING. They just tried to make it sound less harsh by saying "oh but we wont interfere w/ any current grants that are being disbursed"

so yeah, SGK sucks...they've tarnished their brand thanks to Nancy Brinker & Karen Handle's political motivations & that's it for me & alot of others who once respected & supported this organization.

This is an embarrassment to mainstream media too. Interestingly enough, when I searched Al Jazeera for anything about the "reversal" earlier today, I couldn't find anything. Thats something else that made me leery about it.

lol I thought you hated Planned Parenthood now? :p

It's all spin...spin spin spin. They should at least have the courage of their convictions instead of pandering to public opinion (one way and then the other).

Karen Handle, the woman who pushed this move, has RESIGNED. GOOD. now she can take her out of touch, far right rhetoric back to Georgia.

Women like her have no business being involved in an entity that purports to be interested in preserving women's health.
