If you knew a [supposedly "close"] friend or relative followed a religion or political party or some other group that you didnt like or agree with, would you stop dealing with them?

I'm going to be honest and say I HAVE done this. With certain specific individuals when I found out their father and grandfather were members of the KKK & they fly the confederate flag outside their house. It BLEW ME AWAY! and then when I learned of this and confronted the person- they attempted to suggest that their parent/grandparent "arent like that anymore" and that "we fly the confederate flag because its apart of american history and we love america." I also dont tolerate people who identify with the Tea Party and have cut people off for that.

I felt like i was selling myself out if I continue to deal with them after knowing they were affiliated with a group that promoted racism (among other things). I believe in being true and honest and to me- dealing with someone who is alligned with a group/people that go against things you know to be true or believe in is being fake. It makes you look weak and seem like you're indirectly OKAY with those terrible things.

Well, I guess it depends on the exact situation. What does the person in question believe themselves? Are they a bad person? Cause sometimes titles are just titles. Obviously being affiliated with the KKK and thinking that's okay is crazy...I guess you need to ask yourself if being associated with them is bad for you, and if knowing you might change their point of view.

For me I would say that it depends on what it is, if it's something that shows that the person is certifiably nuts like the KKK or Nazi party, then yeah I would think I was better off without them. But if they just have a different point of view than me, I don't think that's something to end a relationship over, and I don't think that would make me a "sell out". I still believe what I believe.

My sister's godparents have as they've aged become like these super-religious, far right people. I only see them once or twice a year, so it's something we just roll our eyes at and deal with for the day. Cause otherwise they are nice people lol.

I think it depends on the level of the beliefs, if they're in the KKK or Neo-Nazis (though you shouldn't be friends with me if you are) then yeah its time for me to say good bye without a second thought but if its something relatively normal-ish like being a member of Scientology then i guess i can deal but I'll definitely try to steer them away from a damn cult if i can

Like others have said, it depends on how they act about their beliefs. Like for instance, I have some friends who are Athiest and I still hang out with them even though they have different religious beliefs than me. However, if I knew someone who was part of KKK, then I wouldn't be friends with them because I don't really want to be around really racist people like that.

whats wrong with being an Atheist? I'm a atheist :pconfused:

She just said it was a belief that was different from her's ;)

Exactly. BK, I'm sorry if I offended you and I wasn't trying to say it was wrong to be an Athiest, I meant that if I was friends with someone and they had different religious beliefs, then I'd still be friends with them because I don't care what religion they are.
