A good question for discussion:

Why do people hate Bendis so much? - Brian Michael Bendis - Comic Vine

I've seen the hatred & I have empathy for it. I've also had ppl say that the hatred is just "band wagon" well for ME it isn't.

MY reason for hating Bendis began w/ "Avengers: Disassembled". Prior to that, I'd only heard of him here & there & how GREAT he was w/ the "Ultimates" titles he was doing. I had perused Ulimate avengers, didn't care for it. I also checked out Ultimate X-men...THAT was kind of interesting & I liked how he did work many fan fav characters into that book & crossed the Ultimate X-men over w/ Ultimate Spider man (Kitty Pryde & Peter Parker dating? That was cute!) Alot of ppl felt his Ultimates books were good & they feel that his own created projects are solid, but his handling of marvel titles leaves MUCH to be desired.

But then, Quesada unleashed him on the Avengers, which was still going strong in Vol III post George Perez & Kurt Busiek. That ONE story arc forever destroyed one of Marvel's most beloved franchises & removed the glamor that was associated w/ the title, to say NOTHING of what he did to characters like Scarlet Witch. The subsequent events that followed- House of M, Decimation & the like; the mass proliferation of [insert adjective] Avengers titles; the overwrought "cross over events" that may have started off w/ "promise" but ALWAYS fell flat- & the fact that they retconned so badly that he'd often have to come up w/ another overwrought follow up to retcon his previous retcon  ; the heavy handed disrespect & destruction of cannon & continuity; the one dimensional characater writing & deconstruction of many fan fav characaters....THESE are the things that upset me about what Bendis does. The Avengers as a franchise in Marvel (the comics ) has NEVER been the same since.

Now he's gotten his hands on the X-men...& the damage is already show :whatever_anim: that was always the one consolation i took during his spread across MU, was that he hadn't touched the X-men (not directly anyway) but now that's not even the case. It's so headache inducing...that I find myself even looking back to MORRISON'S run on the X-men books & considering his work in a more positive light than i did @ the time

So...who else HERE hates Bendis? & why??

Bendis-speak

Character A: Bendis Characters have an annoying way of speaking
Character B: Brian Bendis writes characters that have an annoying way of speaking?
A: Yeah an annoying way of speaking
B: So you're saying their speech is annoying
A: yeah it tends to annoy people
B: Its like, uh . . . reading an episode of Seinfeld
A: uh
B: um
A: what
B: huh?
A: what were we talking about?
B: not sure it might be on the internet
A: the Internet?
B: Yeah the internet, like Brian Bendis
A: Brian Bendis and his Bendis-speak
B: Right, Bendis-speak
A: that way he makes all of his characters speak

Also the way his storylines tend to peter out, they start out well but tend to collapse under his own hubris. Like Secret Invasion was a nice idea but really fell apart at the end into generic everyone punch everyone else.

YES! He DOES have a bad habit of deevolving & deconstructing characters, making them talk & act like snarky highschoolers & overly quippy. Someone on comicvine summed it up quite well,

many ppl have come to know these characters & how they've been written. Bendis comes along & turns them into one-dimensional sundy comic strip versions of 'themselves' & that would upset ANY loyal, attentive, longstanding reader!
