The film industry has become rather boring. Many film critics and historians argue that the best era of american cinema was during the late 60's through the early-mid 80's , with the 70's being absolute gold. But NOW? It's all about "Summer blockbusters", Disney's unending blow job on Pixar, "Prequels" and "Remakes"...

which trend do you think is the WORSE?

Personally, I feel REMAKES are destroying the quality of films, followed by prequels.

LMAO @ 'disney's neverending blowjob of pixar'.

Well, I don't mind any of those really. I'm super excited about the prequal to the Star Trek movie, I love summer blockbusters, some of the pixar movies are great, and some remakes aren't that bad. But if I have to choose one I could absolutely do without it would be the remake one. 9 times out of 10 remakes fail miserably.

Star Trek prequel*drools*
Well Sam the problem is also that 9 out 10 movies ARE remakes.. there are no more original ideas out there unless their independent movies.. I think remakes SUCK!

I hate prequels. You often spend time and money watching someone get to a point where you actually were willing to watch them in the first place. Often unwatchable.

I like the other pretty much. Pixar is awesome, remakes often quite good if for no other reason the updating, and Summer Blockbusters make the season for me. $1 Billion worth of viewers can't be all wrong, lol.

i think the worst is the endless squeals. The remakes i ignore completely, Disney needs Pixar more than the other way around (the reason they abandon the formula is because its old, dead and needs to stay that way) and the blockbusters just need to be made well and they can be enjoyable ah la Dark Knight and Iron Man. The inability for anyone in Hollywood to have an original thought is the biggest issue i have.

But in since there is no squeal category i went with the endless remakes another problem

Well TECHNICALLY Iron Man and Batman were both remakes. Not necessarily a remake of movies, but of comics, cartoons, [and in Batman's case, movies as well]. So not ALL remakes are horrible. But like Brandon said, most movies are remakes because hollywood can never come up with an original idea.

In the classic sense, there is not really anything new out there anyway.

Superman--remake of Achilles, maybe a refashioned sense of Jesus...

The Hulk--Dr. JecklylL and Mr. Hyde, with a dose of Frankenstein...

Wonder Woman---an idealized Amazonian champion,

and it is not limited to comics.

agreed. Batman especially is a remake (or "reimagining" as they like to call it now).

there ARE clear cut examples of original movies from many different genres but most of these came from the 60's thru the 80's...PERHAPS the 90's if you count something like "Scream" (which is VERY significant in the horror movie genre) i tend to think with the passing of the century that "original" ideas have really not been seen since the end of the 90's...and for every thing that DID come in the 90's there were scores of copy cats.

Now, with no real new "Original" ideas, Remakes are out of control...they remake TV shows and sometimes dont even STICK to the premise of the show that MADE the show what it was (i.e. Bewitched) They remake movies that no one cared about BEFORE and would not want to see again (13 ghosts, Swept away [love you madonna...but that movie was a bit ridiculous] etc) and NOW the horror movie genre in particular is affected by the remake virus with every arrogant ass who thinks they can some how IMPROVE on the classic version (in many cases those classic movies have now gained significant standing in pop culture and cinema history) and the "copy cat" syndrome is still in full effect. Following the SMASH hit Sex & the City....another movie comes along called "The Women" , which is a TOTAL knock off and it fails (rightfully so).

I don't mind sequels...movies like Nightmare on Elmstreet thrived with sequels...but i DO have a problem with prequels because more often than not, they fail....the backstory is wrong and most loyal fans don't want to see someone else playing a role made FAMOUS by another actor.

Speaking of Sex and the City I read that they're having a new series out there call [my favorite phrase EVER ] Cougartown. And before this series was Lipstick Jungle and some other show similar to it.

The only reason i'm going to check it out is because Carolyn Hennesy from GH was cast in it. I'm not sure how large her role is but she's hilarious and I want to see how she does. :)

I think the answer is Disney all around? Sad to say but true, I think Disney has lost their magic :( Seems like all their animation is now Pixar and they have lost the time honored art of hand animation that made them so amazing in their early years. I can understand its probably expensive and extremely time consuming... its much eaiser to punch some points into a computer and have it render the animation for you I'm sure... but it looses something....

DIsney has also gotten extremely bad for Remakes as well as Never-ending Sequals..... do we really need another "princess" adventure where they learn some viable lession like "eventhough everyone is different we can all still be friends" or something like Cinderella XXIV: The Modern Princes......

Now for remakes... anybody catch the latest one "Race to Witch Mountain"..... Why does Disney feel the need to consistently remake their past classics... yes the special effects are better now, but still... can we try for something at least somewhat original?

My instinct is to go Remakes, but then how many times are plays and musicals put on again and again on stage, and if its from a book then its open to interpretation.

Prequels annoy me, like we set up the characters in a movie, say a comic book movie, and spend a whole movie doing so for the mass audiences of joe cinema goer who don't know diddly about the characters, and we, being geeks :) *waves hi* want to just go on adventures and kick some booty and save the world with the characters we already know... so we get to that movie and its either terrible pacing and squished too much into a movie, introducing a new character or a prequel.

We already got the first intro movie, i dont want to know any more.

Summer Block busters annoy me too, as you HAVE to go see them... but personally I don't... not much anyway, with the big kaboom explosions, lack of plot and heavy on the CGI.

Disney are turning around, and whoa with the addition of Marvel now... lets see what that gives us.

I didnt like the streak of sequels they did, and some sequels were prequels and gah no no no Disney.

The way i feel is that Hollywood has run dry!
The film industry has nothing new to bring to an already crowded sequel/remake table.
Most films are linked in one way or another, its inevitable.
Also i think films are too CGI orientated, relying heavily on the graphics, rather than the story.
So whats worse?
I think remakes every time.
If its not broken, dont try to fix it:1900:

That was a hard choice for me as much as i hate remakes of movies, i really hate prequels, i see no point in them at all! But i do dislike remakes and agree with the whole if it aint broke dont fix it rule.

Remakes. I absolutely hate them. I think that once a movie is made, unless you're making a sequel, leave it ALONE!
Rob Zombie and Tim Burton should never be allowed near a movie set ever again.
They've done enough :p

I like Tim Burton! ):
DEFINITELY remakes. Jesus Christ, about 3/4 of today's films and television shows are remakes. Your unoriginality is showing, Hollywood. *eyeroll*

But there have always been remakes, and some are really far superior, or at least very good. The BAD remake is a problem, or the remake made purely for monetary gains. For instance, Sabrina with Harrison Ford & Julia Ormond is an example of a remake working. I would say I dislike the TV shows to movies more than remakes. But movies made into TV shows are not bad!

Yep there are GOOD remakes out there, but we seem to know them by all the bad american ones now... the ones that rip on old horrors or on foreign movies, as a rule remakes aint bad.

Did peeps as a whole have a problem with The Dark Knight.. well to me thats another movie that didn't need making... but seems most disagree with me on that.

I think in Hollywood too many directors utter "we'll do it in post"

I love Rob Zombie and Tim Burton :)

oh and J... I LOVE your banner :)

Well it IS the Americans.... they are remaking too many to list horror and sci-fo movies

and did you see that they are remaking "Death at a Funeral" .... seriously, cant they watch a British comedy... and they are remaking "let the right one in" cant they read subtitles?
