I'll tell you in another lifetime when we are both
As a Film student I have to understand the 'insert intelligent word' of different genres.

My question to this film based board is what type of film do you like and why?

My preference is down to my mood:

If I'm drinking Stella[beer/lager] (Affectionately known as 'wife beater' in England because of its aggressive properties - Hawkhead should know) Then it has to be the Action movie preferably with a chain gun - think the scene in Predator when they are shooting at the forest because the guy thought he saw 'Predo'. In fact whilst fuelled full of Stella, Kronenborg or Grolsch I would happily sit and watch a guy standing in one position and screaming for 2 hours as he unloads his gun at nothing.

Other than that I am actually quite partial to the:

Musical

Kung Fu movie

Anime

Romance

Classic Hollywood flick

How about everyone else and why?

I'd have to say I'm a big fan of Kung-Fu films...especially those written and directed by the great Chang Cheh. I like the action as well as the themes of honor...brotherhood..and betrayal prevalent in ALL of those films...

My favorites are Horror films. I like the thrill of being scared by good make -- up, awesome special effects, great acting, and interesting characters. I like getting the "chills" or "Goosebumps" when the music draws you in like Predator, Alien, Underworld, The Exorcist, Halloween, Nightmare on Elm Street, Watchers.

Horror to me is dark and sexy, especially when done correctly. Wes Craven is one of my favorite directors, his intensity for gore and guts makes a film fictional yet frightening.

I really adore vampires and werewolves the best out of the horror film monsters.

Besides horror, I crave action movies as well to get my blood pumping. Especially when its a wild and crazy stunt such as driving out of a flying airplane or driving through a building. Lethal Weapon, Speed, Mission Impossible, The world is not enough. Action to me is addicting and it keeps audience members on their feet and holding their breath. Its that adrenaline rush that's powerful.

Besides Horror and Action, I favor drama's or thrillers that portray good acting and well thought out storylines. I did enjoy Silence of the lambs, Cry Wolf, Scream, etc. I like puzzles and trying to figure out the killer(s), looking for clues in the film.

Its just me though. :D

I totally agree..I am a BIG fan of vampire films...
My favs are:

Nadja
Lost Boys
Interview with the Vampire (the novels are PHENOMENAL!)
Bram Stoker's Dracula
Vampires - Los Muertos
Dracula II: Ascension
Dracula III: Legacy
Dracula: Prince of Darkness
Dracula Has Risen from the Grave

I'll watch anything as long as it has a good story. For me, there is nothing better than a movie with an engaging narrative. I tend to like dramas and dark comedies more than anything else. Speaking of which, if any of you want to see a good dark comedy, check out Siblings. It was a damn good time.

I've never really understood the whole fascination with horror movies, though maybe that's just because I've seen so many bad ones.

I love movies in general, and can therefore enjoy something of any genre (though i'm getting damn sick of war movies), but my favorite has to be film noir. first of all, i love the look: harsh light and intimidating shadows. i love the fact that menace and sexuality bubble underneath everything. and the dialogue, when at its best, is perfect--tough, curt, double entendres, lots between the lines. and i just love femme fatales.

I love action films, mainly martial arts, anime, horror, especially if its a good werewolf movie. I also get into political, and war movies.

As an ex-film student, I can safely say that "type of film" jargon is a marketing strategy. I like films which are in-between; those mixes the "genres"; hybrid genres. I like a film-noir setting mixed with a science-fiction setting (Blade Runner), or a film-noir setting with an action mood mixed with mystery and thriller mood which grows to be a drama mood in it (The Matrix Triology).

As a Film student I have to understand the 'insert intelligent word' of different genres.

Which one? Just curious.

Myself i'm a Tarantino fan through and through. My favorite movies are Pulp Fiction and Jackie Brown. something about his movies are enjoyable.

I love horror movies. But I'll watch pretty much everything except martial arts-type movies, I think those things blow. (Hero...that's time I wish I could get back.) I have a pretty wide taste, but I never go see regular dramas in theaters. The only types of things I see in movie theaters are horror, fantasy, sci-fi, or action thriller.

Very fond of fantasy, action and horror movies, but ill watch almost anything though if i feel up for it.
but fantasy is definitely my favourite genre

I also like fantasy, though some good action movies are great fun also. i don't like sappy romances very much. Feels like they try to hard to appeal to women instead of being an all around movie.

Re:

I'm pretty big on Horror films. Any and all horror films, I am not picky. Any that can make me spill my popcorn are worth watching again....
Also enjoy a good action flick, or a comedy every now and again. I'm a big fan of Happy Madison productions...Adam Sandler is Hoo-larious!
Have to work in the occasional fantasy and/or Disney film every now and again. Labrynth, Dark Crystal, Neverending Story are some of my all-time faves.
The only films I tend to fall asleep during are war films or anime

I like movies having a good story, action ,comedy and slight sorrows.I don't like sorrows.I watch film to enjoy.

I'm more preferable to those fluffy romance ones--like 'The Notebook' anything thats going to make me cry. I'm also quite fond of a good romantic comedy...well anything really that has some sort of romance in it I'm usually a fan of. It's just something that I'm interested in, perhaps because I lack it in real life? =P

I'd also like to sit down and watch a good fantasy age-specific movie, like 'The Princess Bride' or something like that. There are a few Action ones I like but not so much.

my very favorite kind of films are short short abstract surreal films made by either "nobodies" [like me] or marginally famous people such as jan svankmeyer. next i like the shorts and features of david lynch

if i'm in the mood to watch a movie type movie i usually watch:
sci fi
long boring dramas
mobster movies
horror movies
