I think that Sci-Fi piece is underestimating American moviegoers for the most part. It's kinda setting up the worst case scenario. Watchmen's not gonna do huge 'Iron Man' numbers, but if Snyder somehow managed to create a good, semi-faithful film, it'll be a success.
I think this is a case where critical buzz and good word of mouth would really help this thing. Just keep plugging it as being based on the most critically acclaimed graphic novel of all time. That 1st teaser alone created a huge wave of curiosity out in pop culture land.
Also, if Dark Knight manages to pick up some significant Oscar nominations (supporting actor, direction possibly), that can only help to increase the prestige of the genre in general (and maybe help out Watchmen).
