This is a question I have wondered about for some time. I get that people have other Diva favorites...hell, she isn't even MY Diva favorite (that would probably be Patti LaBelle). But I have seen all over the web how people REALLY HATE her and HATE ON her for EVERYTHING.

So I figured I would ask:what is with all of the Beyonce hate?

She is beautiful (nothing fake), she CAN SING (nothing autotuned or overproduced and she has done a TON of live singing), she is actually the wife of the father of her new child, she successfully transitioned from child to adult star, no REAL craziness (drug abuse, sex addiction, domestic violence, poor choices). So what is the deal?

I am not even mad, it is what happens to ALL stars. I know people who even hate MADONNA. But for some reason there is a coalescence around Be that I just don't get.

Get your hate on or get your analysis on, I figured I would see what people had to say so I can "get" it too, lol.

Ppl have been hating on Madonna from the BEGINNING ("minnie mouse on hillium"; "ragamuffin street urchin") even Cher & Bette Midler were initially dismissive of Madonna when she made her first big splash & stopped the show on the very first MTV VMAs in 1984.

Madonna has since SILENCED the critics that thought SHE would fizzle out after her first record many times over.

Ppl hate on Madonna now moreso b/c of her age Even though she doesnt look it, has a body that would shame some 20 year olds & can still PULL 20 yr old men.

Beyonce is over exposed. There's been this push to have her be regarded as either the Diana Ross of the new millenium or the queen of pop. She's NEITHER.

Beyonce is overrated, overexposed, has a THIN vocal ability (her octave range is smaller than madonna's btw), can't dance, can't act (playing a character that's a singer is not acting by any stretch) the depth of her songs is shallow. She's aging but the content of her songs remains quite juvenile. she continues to sing songs about her body, having a big ego, being "all that", & other self centered, shallow material. she's not a writer of her own music either as far as I know. Her last album did NOT sell very well either.

She's also very tacky & inconsiderate. She & Jay-Z caused major problems @ the hospital where they gave birth to their baby. They caused other parents of newborns to be seperated from their babies b/c of their outrageous demands. That was not right.

what's happening to her is the same thing that happened to J.Lo by the time she got w/ Ben Affleck after several years of high success. Ppl are TIRED of her b/c she's over exposed & predictable.

OK...I have heard of some of these. The only problem is, some of them are demonstrably false, most of them are at least heavily in dispute.

She is a soprano while Madonna's voice is much lower, Madonna SHOULD have more range since she can approximate some of Be's range with falsetto. But her vocal ability is strong and extremely well-regarded among musicians and singers. To say her voice is thin...you can scour the web and find someone who agrees, but you can search relatively quickly and find people who disagree. Her use of melisma and vibrato to enrich her sound is especially noteworthy among contemporary artists.

She has two Golden Globes nominations to her credit so she has to have SOME acting ability one would think (though that WAS as a singer). She is definitely respected in the field, but I agree that she is no actress to any high level.

I agree with you her not necessarily having deep songs but I am willing to wait...she is only 30. And I would hardly call "Irreplaceable" or "If I were a boy" particularly shallow, especially if the comparison is Madonna. :p

The last album has sold not as well. But it did go platinum which most people would take in a minute, and it debuted at #1. Also, since it seems that the album was written through a pregnancy and miscarriage and new pregnancy attempts (which bore fruit) if reports are correct, I personally give her a bit of a pass.

She is not only a writer, she won the Pop Songwriter of the Year award at the 2001 American Society of Composers, Authors, and Publishers Pop Music Awards, becoming the first African-American female and second female songwriter of all time to accomplish the feat. She also is one of only 3 women to write three number one hits for a single calendar year (Carole King and Mariah Carey).

The hospital claims were completely refuted, the press simply did not find that the fact they reported false claims to be as important as the original "story". Apparently there were two claims that, upon investigation, were found to be without merit. The other parents said they were fine and Be's people gave them no issues. I suspect that this was a bit of paparazzi payback for lack of access to the newborn and new mother. As a new father myself, I sympathize.

But this is enlightening so far. I cannot do anything with overexposure claims; perhaps that is the case. But it does show how stories repeated become "truth". The rest is in the eye of the beholder. That you have more than a few people who agree speak to something there. But you are right, everyone in this industry deals with critics (or haters, depending on viewpoint). I was just wondering why Be seems to get quite a bit of it.

Interesting...

maybe i just don't allow myself to listen to her long enough to pick up on the substance you suggest she has :p everything i've heard of her is typical mezzo soprano.

Madonna has two golden globe WINS (best actress; best original song) & two oscar nominations  (sorry i just HAD to retort w/ that :D )

oh we can discuss the LIBRARY of madonna songs that have deep meanings...in fact colleges have offered COURSES on Madonna & her music! ;) touche' on "if I were a boy" though. That was one of her more thoughtful offerings.

& i stand corrected on her writing ability.

we may never know about the hospital bit...we know that reports on celebs BAD BEHAVIOR often gets covered up or spun down by their "people" I've read reports about Beyonce's bad behavior in restaurants & hotels so it just seems believable to me...especially w/ Jay-Z in the mix. But it could very well have been the papparazzi.

All celebrities have the phases of big splash & backlash. Madonna went through her backlash from about 1992 thru 1994 but she still managed to keep strong record sales along the way & the Erotica album (her "lowest selling" album to date), initially shredded by mainstream press as her pushing the sex envelope FAR TOO FAR has since gone on to become a well regarded piece of dark artistry & even is well regarded as hip hop influenced cross over album. 1995-96, Madonna was "quiet"...w/ one compliation album of her ballads & prepping for Evita. She made her splash (& another big FUCK YOU to critics) as an actress in Evita in 1996-97 & won a golden globe then in 1998 she had her huge "comeback" w/ Ray of Light showcasting stronger vocals thanks to the voice training she received for Evita. She's been flying high again ever since.

Beyonce's trajectory is like J.lo's @ this point b/c she's been EVERYWHERE ALL THE TIME. She's becoming more "famous for being famous" than for her [depending on who you ask] talent. Alot of ppl (that i talk to) felt she used her pregnancy as a publicity magnet to make up for the lack of sales on her last album. when you start doing things like that...you fall into the realm of Paris Hilton/Lindsay Lohan & THAT'S no good.

During Madonna's rise & coast to her backlash phase...twitter, FB didnt exist. the internet was in its infancy & Madonna had a decade to pay her dues & reap the rewards of success...w/out the "benefit" of a phillandering father as her manager lol.

if she's SMART...she'll step back for a while & when she DOES make her "comeback", she'll showcase a new/better sound w/ more mature material.
