Ugly Betty

I recently watched a few episodes when one of our cable channel did a marathon. A lot of people have been talking about it true, but it's not something I would plan to watch. If nothing else was on, it's okay and everything, but if I was in charge it would not get a second season lol

Wow, that bad huh?

It did seem kind of unbelievable though, I don't know what it just felt uber manufactured and overdone.

They could have just cast a real fat and ugly person.... with Betty I kinda have the feeling that she's gonna get better looking and I keep trying to find the beauty within her... which I suppose is kinda the point...

Well they always do that - they never have an actually unattractive person playing an ugly person. Which kind of sends out the message that ugly people are just dressing wrong and that it's entirely their own fault.

You know I think it is mostly the fault of the person for being unattractive, people need to learn to work with what they got and feel good about what they have.

Anywho, I got to see a pic of 'Ugly Betty' without the braces and non-matching clothes, she is actually really pretty.

I watched the first episode, and I thought it was nothing more than fluff. I think the reason why it's so "huge" is because they have an "ugly" person as the lead roll trying to show other people that looks don't matter, it's whats on the inside that counts. Which is crap considering America Farrerra (the lead actress) is really pretty.

My parents like the show, but I haven't watched since that first episode. I probably won't watch it again either. lol. It just doesn't capture my intrest.

Pretty much. It's nice to watch when you don't feel like thinking about an episode/worrying about what's going to happen/being tense cause you need to pay attention...I'm not explaining myself well :p I mean, it'd be the type of thing I'd watch to keep me from being lonely while trying to fall asleep.

I guess I am in the minority here. I love Ugly Betty. It is fantastic, and hilarious. Yes, it is lighthearted, but that makes it one of the most fun hours of TV I watch every week because most of the shows I watch are really heavy and serious. But this show is funny, sometimes sends good messages in each episodes, has a stellar cast, great characters, etc. Becki Newton (Amanda) is great in this show.

Vil, I can't believe you don't want this to go another year. I hope it lasts several. This and Desperate Housewives are the best dramedies on TV right now. :D

I think so. They have a nice mixture between drama and comedy. Although drama outweights the comedy heavily.

I love this show! At first I thought it was nothing but fluff, but several episodes in you start to get into it. From her relationship with Daniel, to that of her family.

I'm surprised that even my mother (who mocked me for being a Buffy fan) loves this show. Her nephew Justin cracks me up.

She is certainly not 'ugly' not even when she is in her Betty get up, but considering she is working in the fashion world who are all stick thin and all made up every day I guess she is (by their standards) heck even me on my best day would be considered ugly by that lot. The difference is the person inside which we get to see in Betty, and what Daniel sees.

I don't find Betty *ugly*. She's both attractive and unattractive. She's attractive because of her personality but ugly in the sense that she doesn't seem to care at all about her appearance. I mean, even if she buys exclusively from Wal-Mart, they have some nice-looking clothes, and she could wear her hair differently. I don't think she should try to look like her fellow Mode co-workers (although Amanda is smokin') but she could STILL try to do SOMETHING...

And you're right, the show is deeper that it appears to be, the characters all have depth (even the shallow ones, lol) and there's plenty of development. Yet it still thankfully manages to be lighthearted and relaxed viewing.

but she could STILL try to do SOMETHING...

But why should she have to, if she is happy with who she is then she shouldn't have to change. The one thing it does show is how even strong minded people can feel pressure to change in order to fit in at work and the image that goes with the job.

Why should we? When I first started Univeristy I was told that if I ever wanted to be taken seriously as a Solicitor I would have to change how I looked. Apparently clients wouldn't take me seriously if I had black, blue and purple hair.

Then I agree with whoever told you that. Not that I would personally have a problem with anything having purple and blue hair, but if you want business people to take you seriously you can't go in for an interview, or try to sell them something when you look like that. It's just a fact of life.

If I was hiring someone, two people come in. Both are just as competent, both would probably make good employees, but one is dressed like he cares and the other has tons of piercings and bubble gum pink hair. Who am I going to choose? The one who is dressed nice.

And it proves my point, the point that certain images go with certain careers. In the fashion career, someone like Betty would be deemed as unfashionable and not suited to the position. By any other standards she is not ugly but by theirs she is.

And for the record I did change my hair colour and the way I dressed for the office, I did it grudgingly but kept an element of it for outside the office.

I love Christina, for her sense of humor and her dress sense and the recent interaction between her and Mark.

Anyone else well up a tad over the whole 'bag story' and the sacrifice Betty made for her dad when it reminded him of her mother? And even though I want to see Betty with Henry from accounts, that was really sweet what Walter did for her.
