Coachella has gotten rather interesting in the last few years. I remember all the uproar ppl were in when Madonna headlined back in 06.

What is the point of this? By that I mean is he (the hologram) singing unreleased material or is it being done just to create something to talk about?

well Tupac was a notorious studio rat by many reports & so there's apparently a wealth of unreleased material. this here (unless im badly mistaken) is not new material. this was the closing event @ this years coachella music festival.

the technology was used during the '08 presidential elections when someone (i forget who) had a hologram projection in the CNN news room giving commentary from California.

i hope it doesnt become a gimmick for ppl who just want to grab headlines.
