I have two reasons for posting here. The first one was my title:I think the Oscars really suck.

The reason I can't stand the Oscars is that they have departed more and more from what they once were:a celebration of the great and successful movies of the past year. Instead, I find that it is an old fogey celebration of how THEY think movies SHOULD be made. The Oscars back in the day paid homage to movies people actually watched; now I find myself not excited to hear about movies I likely will never see. I have friends who have seen "Slumdog Millionaire" and I have no real quarrel with it, I will probably see it one day. But the snubbings of "Gran Torino" and "Iron Man" in particular show that the academy is out of sync with what people want to see. What people paid to see has to figure in here somewhere, unless you are of the opinion that people who saw the medium 30+ years ago are somehow infinitely more qualified to judge movie quality than people now.

The second reason was to measure public opinion about this. I understand that I will take this with a grain of salt (you guys are a bit more artsy than most) but I am curious: do you like the Oscars, hate it, or not care?

i think one BIG problem that has detracted from the allure of the Oscar's as the sudden proliferation of award shows left and right for every damn thing no matter how insignificant and no matter how ridiculous....there's an "award season" now on television and award shows have become an industry standard where they were once something truly special and unique.

another problem is that the "star power" just isnt what it used to be. let's face it...some of the stars of today just don't have the same platform of relevance and mass appeal that stars of yesteryear...i mean really...Miley Cyrus? Beyonce? @ the oscar's? REALLY? Some people just SHOULDNT be @ the Oscar's...that is supposed to be the ULTIMATE award show for the best/most celebrated movies, actors, actresses and those associated with that...not flash in the pan starlets who are told to go there because it's the place to be seen.

Keep in mind, that the "People's Choice Awards" is supposed to be the show where the PEOPLE decide what movies, tv shows, actors and actresses win the top prize, but the Oscar's are a direct product of the academy of motion pictures arts and science (or however they say it). the criteria for who wins has always been "mysterious" but over the last few years the recipient of these awards has become more and more unbelivable with a few notable exceptions (well deserved winners) in between and many shocking and disappointing snubs and upsets.

This year...they tried really hard to shake it up, and i'll give them A for effort. My favorite choice for "anti host" though would have to be Chris Rock! when he opened the show in 2005 with "Allright, sit y'all asses down"...I GUFFAWED with laughter LOL!

Hugh Jackman was alright...but when BEYONCE came out and tried to a rousing show stopping "dance number" with Hugh Jackman ala' Fred Estair and Ginger Rogers...i turned the channel and did not return.

I fuckin hate her...and if they thought having HER on the show in that mermaid monstrosity BOMB of a dress by her mother (House of Derreon) was going to draw in more viewers? they were WRONG.

Beyonce would be the ONLY reason I might watch, lol!! But while I understand what you are saying about the People's Choice awards, I would argue that the relatively recent crazy selections by the Academy made that necessary. It used to be that the people were heard when this thing came around. NOW...you can have a good movie that people like that is completely ignored. That is a shame. The Oscars would be all alone if they hadn't gone so elitist and weird.

Personally never been big on award shows, it always seems like you're either watching to be told whats art (which i can make my own decisions on) or confirmation you're watching/listening to the right things (which i don't need)

I thought last nights telecast was by far the best Oscars i've ever seen. I've been a dedicated viewer since I was a kid. I love watching them, although they have always been very long, drawn out, and at times boring. But I thought this year they really tried to make it stand out and not the 'typical Oscar telecast'.

I absolutely LOVED that they had previous winners in each acting catagory say a little something about the current nominees and present the winner together. I thought that was brilliant. And I also really enjoyed that they took the time out and gave a montage tribute to all the movies that were released in 2008 in their different genres.

And personally, I think Hugh Jackman did wonderfully as host. It was refreshing not to have a comedian stand up there and say lackluster jokes and poke fun at the nominees. I mean sometimes it works and it's hilarious [I loved when Ellen DeGeneres hosted a couple years back] but it gets extremely old after a while. I thought it was so well done.

The ONLY thing I really didn't like about last nights telecast was the number Hugh Jackman did with Beyonce, the two High School Musical kids, and the Mamma Mia kids. It was just really....embarressing to watch. They should have cut that and gave more time to the actual songs that were nominated.

But that's just my opinion. :D

they really DID do a good job with trying a new format...but Beyonce killed it (in a BAD WAY) for me and alot of other critics say the same thing on reviews of the telecast all over TV. WHY does she have to be apart of every "big ticket" event? she hasnt done anything "oscar" worthy...certainly not that TACKY mermaid monstrosity of a dress she showed up in AND she was LIP SYNCHING on top of it all!

Farrah.. Stop Hating. Beyonce = Awesome ;)

I hate the Oscars and ALL the awards shows and I only watch for the Best Actress/Supporting Actress category and even that i can find online. It just seems like a big to do for nothing. YAY! LET'S CELEBRATE HOW RICH AND ANNOYING WE ALL ARE AND GIVE OURSELVES BIG ASS GOLDEN STATUES TO COMMEMORATE THE OCCASSION! It's annoying. And sometimes I watch the Fashion Police on E! to see the dresses.

LOL! well it used to be the "live on the red carpet" with joan and melissa rivers that was worth watching...the academy awards Pre show. Now that they've been replaced, that show SUCKS and then when Joan was on the panel for the Fashion Police discussion of the night's fashions...that two was truly fun and hysterical to watch but alas...too many people got their little feelings hurt by joan for blasting them for wearing those horrific ensembles they dared to leave the house in LOL and she was let go.

I guess my love for the Oscars is more so because I want to be in the industry. And of course, win one. :D LOL

And I agree about Joan Rivers. I used to LOVE watching her bash people's dresses, it was freakin' hysterical.

and we want to see you get in there and do it big TOO! that way we can all say "OMG! That's PERSEPHONE in that movie!" LOL! :D

but its really easy to understand why you are TOTALLY into these shows. This is your craft and you immerse yourself in it! :)

honestly when i was younger i enjoyed them too...but after about 1999 and DEFINATELY 2003 (after the GROUND BREAKING and LONG OVERDUE moment where a black actor and actress won the TOP honors @ Oscars) its been hard to "care" about these shows.

many of today's stars just dont hold the fascination to me and the award shows themselves are so numerous now that the established shows are being dilluted by the new "flash in the pan" ones.

LOL. It's funny, because in Kate Winslet's speech [whom I was rooting for to win!], she said how when she was 8 she stood in front of the mirror with a shampoo bottle as her Oscar and practice an acceptance speech. And when I was a little kid I did the same thing! LOL.
