with all this talk about "resolutions" for the war in iraq...isnt the most OBVIOUS option for congress simply to use their new found "power of the purse" to cut funding and force the withdrawl of our troops? even if Bush veto's it, the new democractic congress COULD override the veto with 2/3'ds vote.

the people of this country sent a STRONG message during the midterm election that they were tired of Bush and his administration's bullshit. I feel that it's time for congress to yank bush's chain. He's gotten a few rebukes along the way (one of the strongest being when the federal judge in DETROIT struck down the domestic spying program as unconstitutional).

right now, with the way congress is acting like they are AFRAID to use the power they have...it almost seems like this misbegotten war is a bi partisan thing now more than before.

what do YOU all think about this?

The problem is the Senate, where the Republicans CAN and WILL block any veto override (and much of the legislation the President does not want). The democrats have been trying, but the Republicans and this administration still wield a tremendous amount of power that they do not care about using since they are lame ducks.

this is true. but bush's tight circle of loyalists has been more than busted up. Rumsfeld and others have either been fired or resigned. He doesnt have the insulation he once had a this congress is definately pressing for accountability on the part of this administration for the MANY misdeeds that they have done. the scooter libby case should be proof of that and now Atty General Gonzales might be on his way out as well.

This WAR is taking a tool on this country and our men and women are suffering over in Iraq. it's time to stop this and i personally believe thats one of the many reasons why people voted the republicans out of power in congress. the PEOPLE want change and they made that clear in the mid term elections.

question is, will the democratic congress forge ahead and show they have the BALLS to do what should be done?

LOL!

i couldnt help but laugh at that because honestly, our entire political system is flawed and corrupt and it's a very real possibility that the current congress will be less than vigilant in repairing the damage bush has done...but it IS clear that the american people wanted something to change, other wise im sure the republicans would still be in power right now :)

The problem is that once you invade a country, you are responsible for it. The issue is WHAT to do now with Iraq. Thsi is a question that is not easily answered and the Democrats have already seen what happens when you get it wrong.

In addition, Bush consolidated tremendous amount of power for himself and his allies after 9/11. It is very difficult to swim against that tide, especially when you only have a modest House majority and not even a filibuster-proof Senate majority.

Well what I meant was that...what is the biggest industry in the US? War. So a lot of those Democratic Congressmen know that if we pull out of Iraq and scale back the military, that means bases closing and unemployment for their constituents.

as of today, the senate signed in agreement on this bill that proposes a 2008 deadline for withdrawing the troops from iraq. its getting to the point now where Bush is going to be forced to look at this issue and do something. if he DOES veto it, i hope the congress will override the veto. apparently several republicans sided with the democratic controlled congress on this issue.

All show, Bush will thumb his nose yet again, and the Dems will cower. Hopefully, they won't, but with so many loyal Bushies in the Senate..... Just refuse to fund the damn war, Bush's hands would be tied, but the Congress is too worried about '08 to take such a political risk.
