THE BOYS GETS PICKED UP BY COLUMBIA
Comic book-to-movie announcements have been flying fast and thick recently, and today, it’s The Boys turn.
According to Variety, Columbia Pictures has landed the rights to the Garth Ennis/Darick Robertson series, and is looking to turn it into a feature film, under Neal H. Mortiz’s “Original Film” production house.
Moritz described the series, published by Dynamite as: "Rather than begin with a romantic idea of superheroes out to save the world, The Boys imagines a world in which superheroes really exist, with all of the flaws that real people have. The boys are there to make sure that people with superhuman powers don't get out of line."
Ken. F. Levin will produce along with Moritz, with Ori Marmu, of Original Film acting as executive producer.
Newsarama spoke with Dynamite Entertainment President Nick Barrucci, who said: “When we spoke with Garth and Darick on The Boys about Dynamite Entertainment’s taking over publishing, we knew that their vision would translate for a feature film. The comic was top notch, with great scripts by Garth, and the art is perfect by Darick Robertson. We could not be happier.”
As Newsarama readers will recall, the series' early days were surrounded by controversy, as it started at DC Comics' Wildstorm imprint, but was dropped reportedly due to content concerns. Dynamite picked the series up shortly thereafter. Additionally, the character "Wee Hughie" - the initial POV character of the series' first arcs - is physically based on actor Simon Pegg, who wrote the introduction for The Boys first trade paperback collection.
