No doubt everyone has heard at least a TID BIT about Mel Gibson's drunken tyraid when he was pulled over in Malibu for speeding and driving drunk. It's caused such a ruckus. I'm wondering if perhaps its being blown out of proportion? was what he said REALLY qualified for an "anti semtic statement"?

So now, "The Passion of the Christ" is being scrutinized AGAIN and people are speculating that the movie was a vehical to promote his anti semtic feelings. They cite his father, who dismisses the Holocaust as being "fiction" as well.

if Mel Gibson IS in fact a bigot for these things..then why not scrutinize people like George W. Bush, whose grandfather was a bonafied NAZI, or the FORD FAMILY who were famously alligned with the Nazi party.

at the same time, now with the war between Isreal and Hezabolah (or however its spelled) in Lebanon, there's been some suggestion that with countries like Iran/Syria and others in the middle east SUPPORTING Hezabolah that there's a "global anti semitism" and it's being compared to the rise of Nazi Germany.

NOW SUDDENLY with everything ELSE plaguing the country and the world...we have to be SATURATED with this "anti semitism" discussion on every news channel. As if racism doesnt extend to OTHERS like blacks, women etc?

I'm just wondering if anyone HERE thinks that this whole "anti semitism" band wagon is getting tired already?

Mel Gibson remarks were absolutely bigotted, something along the lines of "every war has been caused by Jews." -- He also, ironically enough, was in production of creating a tv movie about the Holocaust. When you couple these things together, it really does seem to be rather, err, well ridiculous. There is racism everywhere, yes. And it's important to emphasize that it is wrong. I agree that there is other forms, rather than anti-semitism, but I whole-heartedly believe that if Mel Gibson said "asians are the cause of every war" or "black people are the cause of every war" there would be the same amount of publicity.

So has it gone too far? Possibly. But I don't believe that it is really because of the fact that what he said was anti-semitism, but rather because he is a racist bastard.

i thought it was SERIOUSLY well timed (considering) that he has now confessed to a host of personal struggles including depression and alcoholism . don't get me wrong, drpession IS a serious problem and so is alcoholism but after HOW many years he's just now deciding to bring them up? and after what just happened?

this is one of the biggest celebrity spin campaigns i've seen in a long time.

and speaking of that movie he was in production with..ABC pulled the plug so i doubt we'll be seeing that anytime soon.

I don't know whether or not his tiriade was anti-semitic because I never heard it. I'd like to think that if he actually did feel that way he'd have the balls to come out and say how he felt.

I've never really understood why so many people hate the Jews so much, but considering Israeli land was procured in a suspect manner, that explains part of the hatred (the 1947 UN Partition Plan could easily be argued as an unjust act).

I definitely think that Mel Gibson is racist to a certain extent. Given his track record with movies, he seems to have an extreme dislike for the English.

ABC indeed did cancel the entire thing. Just makes you wonder what an anti-semite would do to a movie about the Holocaust.

Either way, Mel Gibson has been spiralling down the road of Tom Cruise (except for less obvious batshit crazy and more TVangelist batshit crazy), and lets just all hope he fades into obscurity.

The two biggest reasons for people hating Jews in my observation (don't shoot me, I'm just the messenger).

1) The Jews played a large hand in Christ's resurrection. It was prophesied and necessary, but it doesn't stop some from being angry in their role in Jesus's death. Silly and stupid, but....

2) the argument over the land. There are two camps. That the Promised land belongs to the Jews, and that the Muslims were there and then summarily displaced.

There you have it. Everything else kinda stems from that. There is the steroetypes, etc, but the above I think state the root causes for Anti-Semitism.

Hmmmm, this is news to me. I haven't heard anything about this. I did think his movie was powerful and moving. But, its anyone's guess whether he is or he isn't. I can't really form an opinion with lack of evidence.

I think the news media is blowing this up. I mean who really cares what Mel Gibson thinks anyway. This is just the media way of sticking it to because he despite the ‘Passion’ he was coming across as Mr. Untouchable. Now he’s starting that “Tom Cruise (except for less obvious batshit crazy and more TVangelist batshit crazy)” – freaking brilliant Sebastian'sArrow, I like it. Is he a bigot maybe, but only if he treats people differently, a little nutty for sure, but if I remember correctly when Passion of the Christ first came out he admitted that he loved his wife and that she was most wonderful person in the world etc but that she was going to hell anyway because she wasn’t of the particular Catholic sect that he was. I doubt he treats her any different but expects to be without her in the next life. I don’t know I’m honestly just tired of hearing about it already.

Mel Gibson, who was arrested Friday for driving under the influence, has issued a new statement apologizing for making anti-Semitic comments to a police officer.

"There is no excuse, nor should there be any tolerance, for anyone who thinks or expresses any kind of anti-Semitic remark," Gibson says in the statement. "I want to apologize specifically to everyone in the Jewish community for the vitriolic and harmful words that I said to a law enforcement officer the night I was arrested on a DUI charge."

In a report posted on the Web site TMZ.com, Gibson is quoted as having said to the Malibu officer: "The Jews are responsible for all the wars in the world," and asking the arresting officer, "Are you a Jew?"

Some Jewish leaders praised Gibson's statement. "I welcome his words, and I hope and pray that they are sincere and heartfelt," said Rabbi Mark S. Diamond of the 280-member Board of Rabbis of Southern California. But, Diamond added, Gibson needs to show "tangible actions" of repentance.

Meanwhile, as controversy rages over whether the Los Angeles Sheriff's Department tried to cover up Gibson's remarks, the attorney in charge of the panel looking into the matter said a preliminary review found nothing wrong with the handling of Gibson's arrest.

"In this case, the information reviewed to date indicates that LASD did ensure that the arrest of Mr. Gibson was handled in accord with its policies and practices," said Michael Gennaco, head of the county Office of Independent Review.

Earlier in the day, the officer who detained Gibson said he didn't want to harm Gibson's career. "That stuff is booze talking," said Deputy James Mee, who is Jewish. "If you are high-strung person, it's going to amplify that and all the bad things are going to come out."

On Monday, the actor's rep announced that Gibson had sought treatment for alcoholism, which Gibson also references in his statement.

Gibson's full statement is below:
There is no excuse, nor should there be any tolerance, for anyone who thinks or expresses any kind of anti-Semitic remark. I want to apologize specifically to everyone in the Jewish community for the vitriolic and harmful words that I said to a law enforcement officer the night I was arrested on a DUI charge.

I am a public person, and when I say something, either articulated and thought out or blurted out in a moment of insanity, my words carry weight in the public arena. As a result, I must assume personal responsibility for my words and apologize directly to those who have been hurt and offended by those words.

The tenets of what I profess to believe necessitate that I exercise charity and tolerance as a way of life. Every human being is God's child, and if I wish to honor my God I have to honor his children. But please know from my heart that I am not an anti-Semite. I am not a bigot. Hatred of any kind goes against my faith.

I'm not just asking for forgiveness. I would like to take it one step further, and meet with leaders in the Jewish community, with whom I can have a one-on-one discussion to discern the appropriate path for healing.

I have begun an ongoing program of recovery and what I am now realizing is that I cannot do it alone. I am in the process of understanding where those vicious words came from during that drunken display, and I am asking the Jewish community, whom I have personally offended, to help me on my journey through recovery. Again, I am reaching out to the Jewish community for its help. I know there will be many in that community who will want nothing to do with me, and that would be understandable. But I pray that that door is not forever closed.

This is not about a film. Nor is it about artistic license. This is about real life and recognizing the consequences hurtful words can have. It's about existing in harmony in a world that seems to have gone mad.

Wow, after reading that article, I DO think he went overboard with that statement. And I don’t believe he should justify his actions because he was drunk. It sounds like he despises the Jewish community especially with a statement like that and to turn around and ask for forgiveness.

That’s bullshit. That’s like someone calling an African American a niger and asking forgiveness, its not going to happen.

It sounds like a bunch of crap to me, especially when he mentions "reaching" out to the Jewish community. And how he’s going under recovery. Recovery from racism? I used to have respect for the guy, but after that statement I lost it. And now to plead the "insanity defense" oh come on. Usually when a person is intoxicated they tell the TRUTH, not spilling out lies.

I don’t believe the media is blowing this out of portion, it quotes him directly. I think if anything the media is addressing a celebrity who is a racist. I think the people deserve to know and I don’t believe its tiresome. This is the first time I’ve heard it.

When I get drunk I say stuff like "Hey, you have no business is that top/skirt/moomoo". It isn't something that can be excused by "I had too much to drink." I felt it that way sober, I'm just usually too nice to say it to their faces.

when i get drunk, it has been WELL documented that i will call people out for what they are and expose people for what they do LOL. :haha: but there's a difference between calling people out and going on drunken racist tyraids.

BUT i also think that its well known that alcohol loosens inhibitions and restraints. you may very well blurt something out that your normal self would never think to say but its lurking in your subconcious.

that's NO excuse but i do believe there's something to that.
