Spiderman outs himself to the press

For a comic book hero, it's the ultimate taboo.

In the latest edition of the Marvel comic "Civil War" on sale, Spiderman does the unthinkable and removes his Spidey mask to publicly reveal his hidden identity.

"I'm proud of who I am, and I'm here right now to prove it," the legendary webslinger tells a press conference called in New York's Times Square, before pulling off his mask and standing before the massed ranks of reporters as newspaper photographer Peter Parker.

"Any questions?" Parker asks in the final panel of the issue, amid a barrage of camera flashes.

In a statement, Marvel trumpeted the revelation as "arguably the most shocking event in comic book history."

The seven-issue "Civil War" series, launched in May, sees Marvel's writers taking on the topical issue of civil liberties.

Following a showdown between a group of superheroes and supervillains in which hundreds of innocent civilians are killed, the government passes the Super-Hero Registration Act, requiring all superheroes to reveal their identities and register as "living weapons of mass destruction."

Marvel's roster of invincible crime fighters is split into two bitterly opposed factions, with one camp -- championed by the likes of Spiderman -- in favour of the new law and the other, including Captain America and his ilk, refusing to relinquish anonymity.

"It's about which side you are on and why you think you are right," said Marvel Comics editor-in-chief Joe Quesada.

I'll give it to Marvel on this one that took a bit of brass, especially if they don't already have an out to retcon it or something. Fortunately for him his enemies have to knock on front door of Stark Tower to get a him, but you know someone's going to try.

This is the type of story that can make me return back to comics after a decade plus absence.

I don't agree with it and I never will.

NO! First they made Gwen Stacy the mother of Green Goblin's children. - The man who killed her. Thereby destroying the legendary moment of her death. Now they strip a character of the most secret and sacred of identities.

The whole POINT of Spider-man was that he was Peter Parker and though Parker was bullied and not respected he was in turn Spider-man and that was what made him cool. They were almost metaphorically two different people. What made Parker so endearing was that he never gained from being Spider-man.

IS NOTHING SACRED ANYMORE?

That's a part of the whole Civil War series and what it touches on..why there's a side trying to uphold that tradition of the masks and keeping their identity secret, and with very good reasons..of course, the other side says it's time to be registered with the public, come out and they have their reasons given all of the events going on. As for me, i'm against it..it may seem like the thing to do after the the incident with Nitro that got the whole act passed, but it's gonna backfire on them bad at some point, i believe in quite a few ways.

I just saw this on Yahoo, and wow. You can most definitely see this happening in the furture in the Spider Man movies.

I'm not a big fan of comics, but this reaches far beyond just the comic book series. Like Sam said, this will most definitely happen in the future spider man movies, and according to one of the main people behind the Spider Man comics (I don't remember his exact position), Spider-Man's "unmasking" will just be ONE of many shocking events that will unfold in the near future. On MTV News, he said something along the lines of "There will be more surprises in the next 12 months than there has been in history of Spider-Man"

Although I'm pretty sure he used another words for surprises, and may have said something other than he history of Spider-Man, but you get the point, right? I would have more to say, but all I saw was the clip of him talking about it on MTV News. Sorry .

If Marvel actually concentrated their efforts on good stories and character depth/continuity they wouldn't have to rely on shock-tactics such as these. Not a fan, never will be. It'll just be retconned or ignored whenever it suits them.

Anyone remember the clone saga? I thought not.

Um Sebastion, no one remembers the clone saga becuase it was crap, not because of the shock value. Civil War reviews by and far have been on the GOOD side. So it's a shocking reveal in the middle of what's already a good story, not a lame story revolving around a shocking reveal.

The clone saga, indeed, was crap. But my point wasn't the impact it had on the reader but rather the impact it had on the universe. Is Ben Rielly mentioned any more these days? I've lost all faith in Marvel pulling anything with lasting repercusions. Much like the "no more resurrections" policy they placed over X-Men, ruining a good storyline for Psylocke, only for 3 years later for them to say, "Oh, well, nah it's good now, Joss Whedon can do it."

You know, one of the best comics I have ever read was the one just before Spider-Man revealed his true identity to the press. He had a long discussion with Aunt May and MJ about whether or not he should go along with Tony Stark or whether he should go into hiding.

Aunt May's dialogue was written so beautifully...she basically said that it was time the rest of the world knew Peter to be the same person who she saw - a hero. It was really beautiful and given the context of the storyline the unmasking of Spider-Man made total sense.

Between this, DCs "One Year Later" theme and the return of Moon Knight, I'm starting to believe comics can actually mean something again.

I think the reactions of people around him like Jonah,Robbie ect has been done very well but I still can't help myself in thinking that for such a smart young man Peter Parker has done something completely stupid.
I know that there's been times when a hero who has a secret identity has had family members hurt of kidnapped before.

But when you reveal yourself you are GUARANTEED that your loved ones as well as your own life are in deep and dire danger.

It's all very well him and others thinking well he'sa hero the world will greet him as such and he can show the world who he is as peter parker. That just doesn't work.
But can he honestly expect the world to be interested in him as Parker moreso than as Spiderman.I don't think so.
*SIGH* Oh well maybe they'll do a dallas and make Parker have a dream about revealing his identity to the world and beyond.
