LOS ANGELES (Reuters) – The "Twilight" sequel scored the third-biggest opening weekend of all time at the North American box office on Sunday, as millions of young women swooned over the complex love triangle involving a high school girl, a vampire and a werewolf.
"The Twilight Saga: New Moon" earned an estimated $140.7 million during its first three days of release across the United States and Canada, closely held distributor Summit Entertainment said, crushing industry expectations.
The record for an opening is $158 million, set last year by the Batman sequel "The Dark Knight." The 2007 movie "Spider-Man 3" follows with $151 million. "New Moon" replaced "Pirates of the Caribbean: Dead Man's Chest" ($136 million) at No. 3.
The vampire romance is well on its way to exceeding the $193 million total of its predecessor, "Twilight," which was released exactly a year ago.
Summit Entertainment said "New Moon" also set an opening-day record with Friday sales of $72.7 million, surpassing the $67.2 million haul of "The Dark Knight."
That tally was bolstered by record-breaking midnight sales of $26.3 million. The old mark was set earlier this year by "Harry Potter and the Half-Blood Prince" with $22.2 million.
A FEW MORE MEN
The closely held studio said "New Moon" also earned $118.1 million from 25 foreign markets. Data from individual countries were not immediately available.
Exit-polling data in North America indicated that women accounted for 80 percent of the audience and half the audience was under 21. Summit said male moviegoers increased their share by a couple of percentage points, and the new film also brought in a few more older women.
"New Moon" revisits the dangerous romance between high school student Bella Swan (Kristen Stewart) and vampire Edward Cullen (Robert Pattinson).
After falling in love with each other in "Twilight," Bella and Edward break up in "New Moon." Bella hooks up with Jacob Black (Taylor Lautner), an American Indian who is also a werewolf. Jacob protects Bella, but she still longs for the gentle blood-sucker Edward. Chris Weitz directed the $50 million project.
Reviews were largely scathing, but the franchise is considered critic-proof. Indeed, the stars have become sex symbols whose real-life romances with each other (Stewart and Pattinson) or with country star Taylor Swift (Lautner) have long been gossip-column fodder. Fans lined up outside theaters days before the sequel opened.
The "Twilight" film franchise is based on a series of four novels of the same name by Stephenie Meyer, which her publisher says have sold 85 million copies worldwide. A third film, "Eclipse," is due in June.
Also new at the box office was the Sandra Bullock family drama "The Blind Side" at a distant No. 2 with $34.5 million, the best opening of her career. The fact-based movie was released by Time Warner Inc's Warner Bros. Pictures on behalf of independent producer Alcon Entertainment. Bullock plays a Tennessee housewife who transforms a homeless black teenager into a high-school football star.
The cartoon "Planet 51" opened at No. 4 with a modest $12.6 million, playing almost exclusively to parents and young children.
Last weekend's champion, the disaster movie "2012," fell to No. 3 with $26.5 million, taking its 10-day haul to $108.2 million. The picture led the foreign box office for a second weekend with $100.5 million; its foreign tally soared to $341.1 million. Both "Planet 51" and "2012" were released by Columbia Pictures, a unit of Sony Corp.
Walt Disney Co's stop-motion adaptation of "A Christmas Carol" fell three places to No. 5 with $12.2 million in its third weekend; its tally stands at $79.8 million.

HAHAH! LOL!

For some reason I can just picture you in the New Moon Theatre.. being like "BOO! Go away sparkpire! BOOO!

It also reminds of Wanda Sykes when she talks about having sex with someone so boring that she just boos them LOL!

Dear Twilight Saga Haters,

$142,800,000 in three days.

Suck it hard.

Warm regards,

:lexi:

PS: If you were disturbed by the NM 'lunacy' [hehe], just wait for June 20, 2010. That's when Eclipse, arguably the best book of the series, will hit theaters. And after that... Breaking Dawn, which is rumored to be made into not one, but two movies. BD pt 2 will be motherfucking AWESOME SAUCE. You aren't out of the Twilit woods yet. You'd be better off if you just accepted it now. :D

Perhaps not... but making a lot of money DOES ensure that you will be hearing about it for a long time to come. :D

Lol, and besides, I accepted long ago that the Saga isn't classic literature or anything particularly philisophical. It's just plain entertaining, and there's certainly nothing wrong with that. :D

Hey, Vil, have you seen it yet? I was interested in hearing if you liked it better than Twilight or not.

I have not, but it has to be better than the first one. I stand by what I said that the people who made that first movie shouldn't be allowed to watch movies, let alone make them. It just make me angry to see people gain success by doing a shitty job.

Lol, well it surpasses the first movie by leaps and bounds, as we all suspected, but don't be surprised to find it sticks to the book like a rabid chipmunk to a young child's finger. Aside from a few omissions [probably made for time] it doesn't really deviate.

And the movie itself was shot beautifully [imho, with which you may not at all agree ;)]. there's the clocktower scene, with Bella shoving through the sea of red, which as you probably know from pictures and whatnot, was very vivid, and then there's another scene with Jacob in the rain and it's not that he's shirtless so much as he's shirtless and there is LITERAL STEAM RADIATING FROM HIS SKIN which kind of just mesmerized me and i don't even remember what they discussed because i was just like crazy distracted with awe over the steam. I don't know what was wrong with me, i can't explain it lol.

That was funny.

As a fan of the books, I was extremely dissappointed by the first movie which I will go on record of saying was quite literally the worst movie I have ever seen in my entire life. Everything from the script, to the photography direction to the acting to the makeup to the EVERYTHING, it was a straight up hot mess and looked like some unfinished student film. The movie was horrific.

That being said.. I really did enjoy the second film, but my feeling of it was the 2nd book is the most boring of them all and they knew that, so they were like. Look we are going to make this hot kid shirtless for two hours so nobody will really notice that not a whole lot is happening right now, and it worked on me lol. They could have been ritually sacrificing babies and I wouldn't have noticed.

But my whole take on the Twilight franchise is that the books are not works of literary greatness by any stretch of the imagination, and while I don't want kids reading them and thinking it's actual real and well written literature, I will support anything that gets kids to read at all. I like Twilight and understand that it's all fodder and fun. Sometimes, you just want to be entertained, and I was by the second movie, though it ran a little long, and I always thought the end of the 2nd book was really random and rushed.

^^ Agreed. The Twilight Saga is no Pride and Prejeduce. It's a angsty sci-fi teen book that [like stated in the "review" Garrick posted] gives teen girls a person to relate to. I mean, every girl at one point in her life feels like Bella. Insecure, not pretty, clutsy, and thinking they'll never find the "right guy". Although for me Bella is the least interesting character, and frankly I find her annoying, but I still love the overall dynamic of Twilight and how there's atleast one character in the book that you can relate to. Mines Alice! :D

My sister, who hates reading anything other than magazines, got sucked into the first book, finished it, and read the entire second book in less than a week. To say I was stunned was an understatement. LOL. I totally agree with Brandon when he says, anything that can get kids to actually pick up a book and read something is fantastic in itself. It might not be a literary masterpiece, but it's still entertaining.

As for the movies, I still loved Twilight even though it was badly made LOL. Just because i'm the type of person who loves to see things that I read played out in live action in front of me. But it was definitely not as well made as New Moon was. Personally I cannot wait until Eclipse! That was my favorite book by far and I'm so excited to see it on screen. Especially since New Moon was made so well, it gives me hope that Eclipse will be made just as well, or if not better. :D
