Heart Attack
Here before I've expressed my confusion over how it seems SOME ppl have tried to "capitalize" off of the Holocaust in someway shape or form. But this morning I want to pose another question based on what I heard on the radio & what it made me think about.
On the way in to work today, I heard several promotions for an annual holocaust study/conference to be hosted @ MTSU (Middle TN State University) & that it would feature 10 "scholars" from various high end universities & have a panel of 6 holocaust survivors. There's going to be a short film screened as well featuring Kate Winslet, Ryan Gosling & several others along w/ the film's musical score composed by Moby.
Now, I've noticed that there are many ceremonies, conferences, etc for the Holocaust.
Where is this same kind of revisiting & in depth attention for the massacre/genocide of the native americans @ the hands of the colonists? where is this same kind of revisiting & in depth attention for the horror of slavery, the trans atlantic slave trade?
when a black person tries to speak about those things- ppl clam up, tell them "it's over, get over it." etc. is it any wonder that the trauma & other issues stemming from slavery & the trans atlantic slave trade still haunt african americans in ways that might not even be realized?
Herman Cain (who in IMO suffers from severe identity crisis, much like michael steele) goes on TV & makes racially derisive statements about black ppl & whites applaud him as "forward thinking"...had he made those same statements about jews, those same ppl who applaud him would be calling for his public hanging & he'd be drawn & quartered all over the media.
the holocaust is memorialized & studied, special concessions (reparations) are readily offered to holocaust survivors or even native americans (i.e. going to college completely free) but not african americans.
It just seems wrong to me.
