How many people here play (or watch others) play the RE games? The movies are "non cannon" but contain many elements and references to the games and are loosely based on the video game franchise.

Which game is your personal favorite?

From the games, who is your favorite hero/heroine to use?

What character (hero/ heroine or even creature) stands out the most?

With a 5th installment on the way, Do you think the video game franchise has much more life left in it?

My favorite games of the franchise are of course the original, which redefined EVERYTHING in 1996 and has since gone on to be listed as one of the most important video games ever made. I also like Resident evil 0 , Resident Evil Nemesis (part III) , and Resident Evil Outbreak 1 and 2

Favorite heroine? JILL VALENTINE. She survived the original nightmare and came back to kick ass and take names in Nemesis. She's crossed over into OTHER video games since her debut (Marvel vs. Capcom series) she's received tons of accolades by writers, critics and has even become a pop culture icon and even has received kudos from fashion editors for her now classic outfit from Resident Evil Nemesis. The character has also appeared in the RE movies. She's not naive like Rebecca Chambers from Resident Evil 0 NOR is she whiney and emotional like Claire Redfield from Resident Evil 2

So far we've seen (and feel free to mention any I miss.)

Resident Evil 0 - the prequel to the original

Resident Evil, the original classic from 1996

Resident Evil 2

Resident Evil Nemesis

Resident Evil: Outbreak 1 & 2

Resident Evil 4

Resident Evil Umbrella Chronicles

Resident Evil 5 - on the way

I think if they don't keep the classic aspects and mainstay characaters of the series in tact and adhere to the continuity of the game's history...it could falter and lose relevance...but SO FAR its doing well. RE 4 is the only one i've heard to receive the most NEGATIVE reception so far.

I didn't really play the old ones i got RE4 for the Wii, and what negative reviews have you seen for it? Everything i seen has been positive.

On Game Rankings, Resident Evil 4 got an average score of over 96%, and has been ranked number 2 on the voting average list with an average vote of 9.2, behind BioShock.

Nintendo Power gave it 5 out of 5, and named it their 2005 Game of the Year, and ranked it number 1 on their list of the "Top 20 Best Gamecube Games of All Time" in their 20th anniversary issue.

Resident Evil 4 was ranked number 1 on IGN's Top 99 Games of All Time list.

The Official U.S. PlayStation Magazine named it the Game of the Year for the PlayStation 2.

Game Informer gave both editions of Resident Evil 4 a perfect score, and along ranking number one on their list of "Best Gamecube Games of All Time" they named it their 2005 Game of the Year.

It tied with Kingdom Hearts II as Famitsu's Game of the Year 2005.

Subsequently, Resident Evil 4 was named "Game of the Year" at the 2005 Spike TV Video Game Awards.

Also, the G4 TV show X-Play, named it the greatest game since the beginning of the series in April 2003 and gave the GameCube version a 5 out of 5, the PS2 version a 5 out of 5, and the Wii edition a 4 out of 5.

I think the biggest things with the Resident Evil Franchise is that they are kind of giving up the horror element of survival horror. 4 was ALOT of fun, had great story and with 5 coming out soon (unfortunately on the X-box) i hope its as good as the last set of games.

the negative reviews I read were due to its departure from the horror plot and so many OTHER Plot elements. there was almost nothing really linking 4 to the past games...and you yourself state that you "dont play the older games" even though the original RE changed EVERYTHING in the video game world.

I watched RE 4 and i had no interest to play it. (for one reason because i dont like playing with male characters) it definately has a DIFFERENT FEEL and i believe the producer said specifically his goal was to get away from the "horror" aspect which I think is a bad idea.

Oh well if you look at it from that view i can understand. the decision to get away from horror was made cause of cases of stagnating game play within the games. Survival horror was a whole video game genre is in the middle of either dieing off or being remade.

but that was what made resident evil so gripping the horror, the fear generated from the exploration of viral weaponry and corporate maleficence. RE 4 was rather BORING to me. they shouldnt try to turn the game into some "spy adventure".

they couldn't get the games to work anymore with that formula so they had to change things. It was either change or scrap the franchise which capcom would never do. Outside of a core group of players the Resident Evil games really stalled before 4

I think 5 might be a good match. innovations of 4 (smarter enemies, better puzzles) and the connection previous stories (same cheery RE goodness). I just hope it does well. I think 5 is the first time RE goes to Africa

im reading more and more and im not happy about RE 5. first of all...who cares about Chris Redfield? he spent most of his time being CAPTURED. This Sheva chick....why not just have Ada Wong? She's always been mysterious and when they finally decide to make her a playable character in themain game, they DON'T include Jill Valentine!?

I feel like RE is shifting away from its own identity and becoming a retread of HALO or some crap like that and that is not cool. RE 4 and 5 are also catching flack for the racist imagery they are evoking ( a white man stalking a village of africans and killing them....)

and finally... after watching one of the official trailers, Jill Valentine better not be fuckin' dead or im gonna be pissed and people are gonna know about it

See this i don't get, why is RE5 suddenly racist? No one care in RE4 when you were going around in some Spanish village killing people, not once i have heard of any complaints about the other games. Suddenly brown zombies in the game and everyone is losing their minds. That is unbelievable stupid and more than a bit racist. Hey everyone its ok to kill these minorities in your games but not the brown ones. I didn't hear anyone yelling this loud when the Spanish specking zombies died, at one point does the fear of racism becomes racist itself??

BTW i doubt Jill Valentine is dead if they actually showed the grave, chances are its just a red herring

i gotta be honest, when i saw my first glimpses of RE 5...i suspected that there would be cries of racism. I mean...it DOES look a "certain way"...and maybe thats because we live in a country sick with racism to begin with. maybe elsewhere in the world people dont even think about it that way.

on the one hand, a rational person would say, its just a video game...a zombie is a zombie no matter what color and there have been black zombies seen in RE 2 and 3 and no one said anything then.

Personally, i dont care for RE 4 or 5 because to me they are not really connected to the original concept. Capcom is trying to make RE look like other highly successfull game franchises because they think that is the way to keep RE relevant and that, to me (and others ive talked to ) is a mistake. RE should REMAIN RE...not a retread of some other game. How many other games do you know that have so many references or even cross overs into other games outside of RE?

as for Jill's grave being a red herring...what makes you say that? and what do you think of the rumours that she might be the "bird lady"?

I'm not sure, I think all the years of retreading inside the RE franchise that created a cult following its also created a staleness that weakens the games to outsiders. The game while they haven't failed yet have gotten weaker ratings and lower sales over the years. I believe capcom is trying to stripe out whats gotten too old or reused to put in another game.

As for the grave its Jill Valentine, she is way too popular to be "they guys, she dead" Theres either going to be a huge backstory to it or something is up with that grave. I'm currently betting on the latter, her not dead.

Spurred by the controversy surrounding alleged racism in Resident Evil 5, website videogamer.com decided to talk to an expert on racism. No, not the Grand Exalted Kleagle of the Ku Klux Klan. They talked to Glenn Bowman, a Senior Lecturer at the Department of Anthropology at the University of Kent, Canterbury.

Bowman checked out three Resident Evil 5 levels, and while the academic did note a number of interesting references to indigenous people's reaction to colonialism in Africa, Bowman did not see racism. "I think it's silly to call it racist," Bowman said, then pointed out that in a horror game, you gotta make things scary, so a horror game set in Africa will naturally feature scary Africans and scary African cultural artifacts. Nothing racist there.

"Maybe they'll make the next game happen in Finland and you'll have a whole series of Inuits and the like being really scary and running around with Walrus heads on," Bowman said. (Are you listening, Capcom?!)

As for why the game is being called racist:

"I think it ties in with what I was talking about, about inverse racism. That in a sense there's a politically correct position which says this should be your knee-jerk reaction to what's going on there. I think it's quite likely but I'm not sure that in any way the makers of this game can be held responsible for that kind of response. I think that might be possible, in which case I think what they really should be asking themselves is, although I can't imagine people would do this, why are they having those kind of responses? And what negativity is implicit in that positive response? And the negativity is that actually we don't look at people as human beings, we look at them as black and white..."

The rest of the interview is just as fascinating. I recommend it.

Its official: NOT RACIST!

As far as the horror element was concerned, I would say that RE2 was the weakest. It didnt seem to have as many "holy shit!!!" moments as I thought it shouldve. However the boss fight with a double-clawed Tyrant was pretty intense. RE1 will always be a classic, those damn giant spiders still make my neck hair stand up. I wouldve loved to play the remake on the GameCube with the updated graphics. RE3 had an outstanding element of horror, but I felt like I spent more of the game running rather than fighting back with a seemingly invincible and constantly-mutating Nemesis coming out from every which way poor Jill turns.

Personally RE4 is my favorite (being my only having played the RE5 demo so far) with the inovative over-the-shoulder perspective as oppossed to the traditional RE 3rd person. Popular opinion says that the horror element was taken out of RE4 but I feel like having the OTS perspective only served to intensify the horror as the player had to be aware of his surroundings without being able to see everywhere at once. With some of the grotesque monstrosities Leon had to face down, the perspective almost puts the player in his shoes, as the enemies almost come at the player rather than the character. If that's not scary, I dont know what is. That same OTS perspective inspired a number of game hits like the Gears of War, Ghost Recon Advanced Warfighter and Mass Effect among others.

As far as the overall RE story arc, I believe that RE5 will tie everything together as Ada Wong who appeared in RE4, has ties to Albert Wesker, who in turn seems to be responsible for the Las Plagas virus that infected the RE4 villagers. From what Ive seen in the RE5 demo, the african villagers have the same symptoms/effects from the Las Plagas virus. From what we've learned, Albert Wesker seems to be the common key to all the chaos within the RE universe.

Resident Evil 5

a colossal FAILURE!

Was this RE or Gears of War redux?

Nothing about it was scarey, nothing about it was engaging EXCEPT the mystery of Jill Valentine AND the flash backs to Spencer w/ Wesker.

The upside?

Jill Valentine IS in fact the kick ass "Bird Woman", and she's ALIVE...she SURVIVES! and Albert Wesker a.k.a. Umbrella's "Resident Cockroach" FINALLY gets nailed!

With this game over and done, if they never make anothe RE game...I'd be fine with it. The direction the game has taken since RE 4 has been HORRID its not even what it was ...what made it GREAT!

Didn't see the whole thing through but I CALLED IT!
now all i wish is that they would release this on the Wii so i can try playing it myself

alot of people speculated that
Jill was the "Bird Woman". but I'm not too thrilled about her being blonde
and its clear that Catherine Disher [the voice behind Jean Grey on the 90's x-men cartoon as well as Jill, Psylocke and Rogue on Marvel vs. Capcom II] did not voice Jill in this game either.

It was really hard to care about Chris or Sheva in this game and the creatures were boring.
