Racist Hunger Games Fans Are Very Disappointed

--------------

Beside many typos :sure: lol, the article features some disturbing tweets from "fans" of the Hunger Games expressing outrage over several characters being cast w/ black actors. I have to admit that seeing these tweets really breaks my heart & yet...why should I be surprised?

Where was this same outrage when WHITE actors were cast in the roles of characters for the "The last airbender" movie, which is japanese anime??

It's different when there was backlash against the idea of Beyonce being cast as Wonder Woman. OBVIOUSLY Beyonce didnt match Wonder Woman's appearence (& she's a bad actress) But several of the characters in the book for which the Hunger Games movie is based off of are not explicitly described as any particular race/ethnicity so why is there a problem?

here's a part that really got me:

The posts go on and on and on. It's not just a coupe of tweets, it's not just a coincidence. There's an underlying rage, coming out as overt prejudice and plain old racism. Sternberg is called a "black bitch," a "n*****" and one person writes that though he pictured Rue with "darker skin," he "didn't really take it all the way to black." It's as if that is the worst possible thing a person could be.

You can't take comments like this as representative of fans. It's like reading the comments on YouTube and expecting them to come from rational people.

It's no less wrong, but it can't be extrapolated that "Hunger Games fans are racist" from twitter comments.

The comments from the peanut gallery are coming out! Can't have a blockbuster film without that!

Still, from the descriptions of the characters in that article...some people just need to get a life. And somebody needs glasses to read the book again if they thought the little girl should've been a boy.

I wonder if they'll be making it out to the next two films? I haven't seen the movie yet, still have to read the first book - which is packed away for our upcoming move, but it sounds really good. :)

No excuse for racism. NO EXCUSE.

that's true! LOL the lunatics end up giving the film extra publicity LOL!
@ Caroline, certainly not. you're right on that.

I think the point of the article was that some ppl a) didnt read/comprehend & that the images of the characters they had were in their own mind & b) as usual...characters that are white/blonde/blue are associated w/ all that is good, kind, pretty & easy to care about but the same does not hold true w/ black/brown.

movie to film adaptations are always going to disappoint someone. I myself was terribly unhappy w/ the X-men comic to film adaptations or marvel comic to film adaptations in general. But when Kingpin (from the Daredevil movie) was cast w/ Michael Clark Duncan, a large black male actor, instead of a large white male actor...THAT didnt bother me. What bothered me were some other glaring continuity issues in the film.

These are just the crazy people that either can't read or can't divide their personal fanfiction from the actual books. You really can't judge actual people from these nuts.

People are retarded. When you read a description of "dark skin" how do people not think of either a black person or someone of Latino/Italian/etc. decent? When I read the books I pictured Cinna, Rue, and Thrash as black. I thought they were perfectly cast.
