Priorities?

Okay, so we know that today's political scene in america is dominated by money and influence of those with deep pockets more than ever before. We all know how Rupert Murdoch and the Koch bros. basically crafted this right wing media juggernaut (fox news for the masses and the totally slanted wall street journal for the supposedly "educated") ...it saturates media with a right wing slant on "news". Why doesnt the left or the progressives/liberals have something like this in place? MSNBC doesnt count. That was just a gamble by GE (who isnt even in the business of TV mainly) that paid off and is now a profit generator for the GE conglomerate.

I feel like if super rich progressives/liberals like Oprah, Angelina Jolie & Madonna (to name a few) threw THEIR dollars and influence behind progressive media/causes the way Murdoch & Koch (among others) do the conservative agenda...then the progressives would have a better fighting chance of counteracting this increasingly toxic environment we find ourselves in.

But instead, they want to look cute and profound in with their "humantarian causes" overseas...building massive schools for "underpriviledged girls in africa" or spending "400 million dollars so that every child in << insert country's name>> has a mosquito net. "

I feel like they seem to MISS the fact that A) we've got plenty of "underpriviledged children" , hungry and homeless RIGHT HERE in America and B) if THEY used their dollars the way their conservative counterparts do...then the progressives could KEEP UP with the way things are going and changing.

Its hard for me to be impressed when Madonna or Oprah spends MILLIONS upon MILLIONS overseas while legions starve right here. Some of their own fans might be facing hunger or homelessness.

But then again they also have the option to up and leave America with ease. Tina Turner got out years ago and is living well over in London. But that's another topic all together.

What are your thoughts and opinions about this?

I agree with you on those stars helping the homeless here as well.

Although it's nice that stars like Angelina Jolie gives poor children a home, she doesn't need to adopt every kid she finds in orphanages or in poor places oversea, she could donate money & other to their ENTIRE village and their birth families instead.

Also, I heard many rumors going around when Madonna adopted her first child from Africa, that she was just doing that to look like a nice person and have everyone like her. While adopting a child is a big responsibility that I'm sure she was prepared for, I'm not in denial that it was also for publicity and fame aswell.

I'm just saying...for those that CAN do these amazing things...why not think of HOME first? I'm hardly impressed by these stars trying to come across all cute, enlightened and humanitarian with people overseas when I see folk right here suffering just as much.

Madonna adopted her two children from Malawi (sp?) I cant exactly recall if that's apart of Africa or not (although I'm thinking it is). We actually had a very length debate about "Madonna adopting a brown baby" a year or two ago in this forum. Its interesting that Angelina didnt get scrutinized for it the way Madonna did. But EITHER WAY- i point back to my original statement.

I feel like our own country is a mess...and you can see evidence of conservative "right wing" celebs and wealthy people throwing their money behind that cause, why cant the progressives and liberals do the same thing?

lol there are many many more left wing celebrities than right wing ones lol. I can't think of any right wing celebs other than ShanDo lmao! No one in LA is conservative. Seriously, though - the media is entirely saturated by liberal ideas. I think you notice FoxNews so much because it comes right out and says what it is - but the rest of the media is totally pro-liberal. I'm talking about media in general - not just news, but things coming out of Hollywood in general.

But hell yes, more people need to look at what they can do in their backyards before making grand (PR stunt) gestures.

I think also another reason why im especially sensitive to Faux news is that i dont watch TV at home anymore (you know i got rid of cable in 2009). i get my news online or on the radio and i try to stick with programs on the radio that are TRULY spin free, like the BBC news- "The Take Away" which covers america.

Rupert Murdoch is a shrewd man...his media juggernaut delivers a powerful 1-2 punch.

it just occurred to me the other day when I was reading an article about why msnbc is no "liberal answer" to fox news and thats when i began to wonder if there was anyone on the LEFT doing what Murdoch & Koch were doing on the right.



for the right wing celebs though don't forget Ted Nugent...with his ol elmer fudd hillbilly ass LOL if there was any "celeb"(even one that isnt quit relevant anymore) that was a loud and proud right winger its him! i STILL cant get over Shannen Doherty being a republican! she's pro gay marraige so maybe that's why it throws me off plus i was always such a big fan of her's (still am).

and yeah...im glad im not the only one who thinks these folks who do all these grand things overseas should consider looking at HOME first. i donate when I can, but im no Oprah or Madonna so my donations must be carefully considered lol! Aside from Haiti...I ALWAYS make sure to donate to HOME causes first. I think they should too. They come from here...they have fans here...etc.

I don't know, but I *think* it might be that the left wing celebrities just put their money into other things. Like Rupert Murdoch has built his fortune on news delivery, so that's where he has his outlet. I think the most powerful left celebs are in Hollywood (just my personal opinion) so I think they put their money into films/tv and backing political candidates rather than building something like a network. Though also it IS a difficult place to be a new entry to - the other established networks would most likely do everything to kill a new one.

Celebs probably go to foreign countries because I think people here still try and pretend like everyone in the US is rich and has this idea that everyone outside the US is poor. So they get more "praise" for donating money to children abroad than to children at home because the public image of children in the US is better than abroad. If that makes sense.

thats the thing right there...most of that stuff ISNT "news" its commentating or something else BUT thats what is passing for news now more and more. Fox is leading the way on that shit BUT other "news channels" are following. its becoming the norm. even CNN has changed and i used to swear by CNN.

Yeah Hollywood is often viewed as the most powerfull media outlet on the left. but what do they really do? the movies being put out today are CRAP..and alot of the "powerfull" celebs want to try to "enlighten" us on shit that frankly is IRRELEVANT to what we're dealing with HERE in this country. not that it isnt real or whatever but we have problems right here (what those problems ARE depends on who you ask...but its safe to say that its not a good time in america right now for MOST of us )

yes! and um...they need to update that because WE'VE got a whole crop of "nouveau poor" popping up all across the country. and people say that shit all the time "even the poor in america have it better than others elsewhere"...tell THEM that! the person ON the street with no food and no hope doesnt know that or believe that so to me that's a crock of shit.

this midterm election...set a RECORD for political campaign spending. the scale of the money spent by candidates and those pushing for them was OBSCENE and yet nobody can find a way to address hunger on a consistent scale across the country or medical care etc.

We'd CUT SPENDING if we stopped these damn wars (yes im getting political for a moment) which are pointless but i digress.

these celebs better get a clue because china is on the way up, so is india (thanks in large part to all OUR damn jobs they now have) while america is on the way DOWN and soon, "the rest of the world" will see how POOR WE ARE. I wonder then were these celebs will be? probably living ELSEWHERE. :/
