Coming to a Post Office Near You: Loans You Can Trust? | Sen. Elizabeth Warren

----------------

According to a new report, a quarter of all households don't have checking or savings accounts - relying instead on payday lenders and check cashing services with high interest and fees. The Office of the Inspector General has an interesting idea: If the Postal Service offered basic banking services - nothing fancy, just basic bill paying, check cashing and small dollar loans - then it could provide affordable financial services for underserved families, and, at the same time, shore up its own financial footing.

I actually think this is a good idea! Payday advance places are PREDATORY & BARELY "regulated" by the States they operate in & private banks make it hard for poor ppl to even get basic account services.

CREDIT UNIONS are always an alternative too, they want to work with people.

Whatever they can do to keep the postal service in business...

I hope so!

I think its terrible that the USPS has been targeted the way it has. I make it a point to use them for as much of my package shipping needs as i can to support them.

W/ more & more companies requiring their employees to either have direct deposit or a "pay card" for their payroll checks, it is of serious benefit for ppl to have access to basic checking accts @ least b/c those pay cards are loaded w/ fees for EVERY DAMN THING even having your paycheck deposited on the card comes w/ a fee, it's a huge racket that banks profit off of.

CREDIT UNIONS don't do that :) but if a person can't get an account w/ a credit union...then i think being able to go to USPS for such services is a good idea.

another thing the USPS needs to do is change their hours of operations to accomodate ppl who work irregular hours. I use the main branch by the airport which i live near & that one is open till 9 pm every day. that helps for everything from trying to get a passport, to shipping a package @ the last minute but not all the branches have those kind of hours.
