When I was growing up, I saw shows w/ families like The Huxtables (The Cosby show), The Jenkins (227), even the Connors (Roseanne) & later on, The Winslows (Family Matters) where the parents were involved w/ their children and the children KNEW to respect the parents, even if they tried to sneak behind their back, knowing the consequences. The parents were sharp, aware and (especially in the case of Claire Huxtable, Mary Jenkins and Roseanne Connor) VERY witty, clever and funny.

These days, i've caught glimpses of TV shows (alot were on the disney channel to be fair but still) and the children are running circles around the parents. The fathers, in particular, are usually whiney buffoons and the mothers are rather clueless and permissive. They're more like props than "parents"....what's up with that? & is this an indication of the decline in parenting skills overall in real life? (especially in america)
