Just out of curiosity, what other message boards are you visiting these days? Do you think facebook & twitter might have really impacted message boards as a popular method of sharing/communication?

many of the boards that were around when we started this one are gone (some of them shouldve failed for various reasons :D ) and while ours is small and not roaring with activity, I still like what we got going on here. its OUR spot.

Well, personally, I think Twitter/Facebook give people something else to do with their time and another way to talk to people online. I don't think they replace message board but there didn't used to be as much competition for a users time.

Also, just a personal observation, people have gotten just plain ruder on the net in the past 3 or so years. So I think it's harder to keep a community going because you get so much conflict between members that other members are driven away by the "shit starters". There's just a breakdown in respect for other people and common courtesy - and frankly, getting people to write in complete sentences nowadays is like teaching a fish to ride a bike.

i wondered because message boards dont seem to have the same pull as they once did. there are a few exceptions mainly for soaps and comics and of course Buffy Boards which is DEFINATELY an exception considering that boards for shows like Charmed have long since died in the years following the Show's ending.

i agree! there has been a change along those lines. i see it on FB all the time and across the net in general...its really bad on yahoo news when people comment on news articles, especially ones involving american politics. i mean even I am taken aback at how hatefull some of them are.

and no where is it WORSE when it comes to trolls and assholes than COMIC BOOK message boards. you and i BOTH know that first hand  its RIDICULOUS how they act, and you can tell most of those fools would never DARE talk like that to someone's face.

and finally - folks dont want to READ anything more than a sentence long, let alone WRITE lol. thats definately the case with these up and coming generations.

Yeah I definitely think a lot of it is lack of attention span in people anymore.

Also, tv itself is changing. There is so much more to watch and shows are often cancelled so quickly that there aren't the fanbases for a lot of shows that there once were. I'm not saying it doesn't happen, but I think it happens less now than say 10 years ago.

But it's really amazing how many times I've gone onto another message board, or on webmaster sites, and read about exactly the same thing I'm experiencing. It's like a sea change in people's behavior in general. It's really really odd.

there also aren't as many message boards that can get their word out as fast as a facebook page can at times. There are some message boards that you never hear of unless someone brings them up or they get internet famous like something awful or the net's bowels aka 4chan

I think the only message boards that are really still around are the ones that have been around for years. The only other message board that I frequent is a Law and Order SVU board, which has been around since early 2000 when the series started. And also the soap opera boards like Farrah mentioned, which have been around since the mid 90's.

I think now adays message boards are harder to find, but they are out there. The problem is, with a lot of them there are core members, kinda like us, who make it harder for newer members to join in. OR they're completely run down by pre teen illiterate idiots, spammers, or shit starters.

about the "Core" i maintain that we do welcome everyone. we're a goup of adults who know how to handle themselves and ANYBODY is welcomed to join in. We had people like Timeless Beautie at one time who seemed to make the transition easily...we have Dark Lady now who visits every so often but I can remember some people actually leaving the board saying we were TOO liberal and "adult" in our topics of discussion etc.

We do have a core, but none of us is mean or flat out ignores new members. they just never stick around anymore.

its not like on comic book boards like newsarama where there's this ongoing stream of male pigs who are rude, homophobic, sexist and racist and dont even realize how many more members they could have participating if they werent such assholes.

and yeah these new kids on other message boards....gawd you can see how they type on FB...imagine THREADS filled with that fractured grammar and INTETIONALLY mispelled crap!? LOL!

I wasn't referring to our "core" group. ;) I was just saying that on other boards there are definitely cliques that make it harder for new members to feel welcome. I think it's mainly because the boards these days consist primarily of teenagers.

I do think it's sad though, because a lot of my fondest memories were of playing around on the Charmed Board of WBD. It sucks that there aren't enough really consistent and good boards out there that people can frequent these days. Most boards are poorly run, aren't updated, look like shit, or like I said before, overrun by shit starters and illiterate spammers.

I'm actually going to look around and see if I can find any boards, just for curiosity's sake lol. I wonder if there are any good boards for shows I watch these days. :p

I tend to post on more informational boards. One I post on is an emergency preparedness/outdoor forum, the other is an MMA form.
