From the Nightmare films, 4 definate heroines emerged: Nancy Thompson, Kristen Parker, Alice Johnson and Maggie Burroughs. A quick recap of each one's highlights is found below. Which one is your favorite? Which one is the BEST of them all based on their accomplishments?

Nancy Thompson (played perfectly by Heather Langenkamp) is the FIRST to humiliate and defeate Freddy. Facing nightmares, weird sequences and horrors no teenager should have to, Her victory propells a trend, then still in its infancy, of WOMEN not only surviving the monster but DESTROYING it without the help of a man in a horror movie. 6 years later She returns in a "big sister" role to try to mentor and help protect the "last of the Elm street children". She had been where these children were now...and like them, she was a direct descendant of the parents who burned Freddy to death. Her insight was their key to salvation. She lead them as far as she could, before she too finally fell victim to Freddy's blades. But her legacy would live on.

------

Kristin Parker (played by a young Patricia Arquette in part 3 and Madonna look-a-like Tuesday Knight in part 4) ) is another descendant of the parents who murdered Freddy. She's in that "last" group but unlike the others, she has a power, a psionic talent that allows her to bring someone into her dreams. She used it on reflex for years as a child but under Nancy's tutelage, she hones it and can now bring all of her friends, fellow elm street survivors into the dream zone. she bonds with Nancy, the FIRST to defeat Freddy. Kristin grows in strength and courage, using her psionic power and a dream ability of gymnastics she goes on to face down Freddy and survives along with two others, she promises to dream Nancy into a beautifull place after her mentor is finally felled by Freddy. In part 4, Kristin is riddled with anxiety and that anxiety and fear help set the stage for Freddy to return.

She can't stop him from killing off fellow survivors Joey and Kincaid but when he turns his attentions on a young Alice Johnson, Kristin fights Freddy and loses. She passes her power on to Alice before dying and thus, paves the way for yet another memorable heroine in the franchise.

------

Alice Johnson (played by Lisa Wilcox) started off as a young shrinking violet who was very introverted, but after one terrifying nightmare in which her friend Kristin is murdered by a "horrible man" , she is given a gift, a psionic ability. Unable to control it, she unwittingly opens the door for this monster to stalk and kill more of her friends, but with each death she changes. She grows stronger, and learns more about the monster, his past and what he means to her and her friends on Elm street. with the strength and gifts of each friend she's lost, she transforms into and sets out to face Freddy down. Her battle with Freddy was very physical, probably not what Freddy expects, but no matter what she does to him, she cannot put him down. Finally she uses her power from Kristin to unlock the souls of those Freddy has killed and they rip him apart as they free themselves.

Freddy was unable to over power Alice in part 4 or 5. She vanquished him twice, gave birth to her child and presumably left Springwood , OH (where Elm street was). She's one of two out of the four heroines that survived.

-----

Maggie Burroughs ( played by Lisa Zane) is a sleek, polished psycho therapist who works in a dilapidated teen shelter OUTSIDE of the "springwood triangle". she's heard of Freddy, knows of his legend, but by now with all the children and teenagers of springwood being dead and the remaining adults in a state of psychosis...she does not have much to say about it.

She uses her skills as a therapist to cope with the weirdness involving Freddy as it envelopes her life.

When she finds herself in Springwood and in the eye of Freddy's "glare" her world shatters as she learns that not only is she his daughter but that he killed her mother.

She takes Nancy's route, pulling him out of the dream world into reality and proceeds to have a very bitter battle with him before blowing him up with a pipe bomb.

I haven't watched NOES in years so its been awhile. And while I have the series on VHS I need to update my collection to DVD. I do need to re-watch the films.

Out of all the heroines I would have to go with Nancy, she paved the way for each of the others. She really stepped up, especially when her boyfriend Glen Lantz was killed by Freddy. Even for the daughter of a police officer she steps it up. I always liked her best of all and I forgot she died!

as weird as it may sound, "Nancy" actually helped ME in my dreams as a little girl. I'm not afraid to admit that going against my mother's warning and seeing Nightmare on Elm street as a child (with my older cousins...i was 7 in 1984 when this film came out) was the WORST mistake i could have made. the nightmares i had were truly crippling.

in some of my dreams, Nancy would come to help me. but after seeing ALICE in part 4, I remember thinking "oh I HOPE i have a nightmare where Freddy appeared". I've had dreams where i turned into "Supergirl" and beat the HELL out of Freddy thanks to Alice lol!

Alice changed the game for me. I was 11-12 years old and while I consider Nancy to be one of horror movie's most important heroines and obviously she's the one who set the standard in NoES , ALICE is my girl!
