According to The Hollywood Reporter a 2009 remake of The Birds is in production, with actress Naomi Watts, who is in discussions to take the role of Melanie Daniels (originally portrayed by actress Tippi Hedren) The plot will be based on the original short story by du Maurier, while the screenplay is being written by Juliet Snowden and Stiles White. The producers are Michael Bay, Andrew Form and Brad Fuller. Martin Campbell is set to direct it.

It had been reported that the film would have a release date of July 3, 2009. Producer Brad Fuller had discounted that report in an interview with The Trades. In an interview with the Denver Post, Robert Knepper said he would also be starring in the new remake; although no official word is out, it is believed that he has signed.

so what...Michael Bay is the horror movie genre's "Brian Michael Bendis"? *eyeroll* he's involved with damn near EVERY remake from Texas Chainsaw and Friday the 13th to Nightmare on Elm Street and now the BIRDS!?

and Naomi Watts...does she REALLY think she's a scream queen? The Ring was a bore, Silent Hill was only intriguing for the creatures involved in it and now she'll be playing the role flawlessly portrayed by Tippi Hedren (Melanie Griffiths mother). I dont see this going well.

Naomi Watts was awesome in Mullholland Drive (and no, I didn't just watch it for the lesbian sex scenes), and that was a noir-ish, suspense film. She's done a great job even in some other lackluster films, like King Kong, and I'm sure the movie will be watchable at the very least.

I like Naomi Watts as well and think she would be good in the role. *shrug* Though I don't think The Birds will be a successful remake regardless who plays the main character. These days a horror movie isn't considered a horror movie without blood, guts, and gore. So either way, it'll probably be a flop.
