Yet another teacher has gotten in hot water after playing Macklemore's hit song in support of marriage equality in class.

BY Sunnivie Brydum

A middle school teacher in Taylorsville, N.C., was suspended after playing rap artist Macklemore's pro-marriage equality anthem "Same Love" in class, reports the Taylorsville Times.

The teacher, who has not been publicly identified, played the Top 40 hit for students, displaying a pro-equality position as the video follows the life and death of a gay man as he faces harassment, coming out, and finding love.

The associate superintendent for Alexander County in North Carolina told the Taylorsville Times, "There was an inappropriate video shown in class, outside the bounds of the curriculum, that called for disciplinary action last week," at West Alexander Middle School.

The song, which Macklemore has said was created in support of Washington's Referendum 74, which established marriage equality in the state by popular vote last year, does at one point use the word "faggot," which has gotten other teachers into hot water.

Last year a middle school drama teacher in Michigan was suspended for three days — two without pay — after she let a student play the chart-topping track in her class. Macklemore later came to the teacher's defense, saying the incident "exposed a latent homophobia, preventing a safe space for all young people to feel confident in being themselves."

But in June a class of eighth-graders in Canada's Ontario province surprised their teacher by playing "Same Love" in class to demonstrate their support for the newly out educator. After the song finished, a student told the teacher, "That was for you, Mr. K.," as the whole class applauded and the teacher found himself with tears in his eyes.

Though I might not agree with what happened, I do think it IS a little weird to play a song in your class that involves such a HOT BUTTON issues in the states...that seems better reserved for a college class. I mean unless they were really discussing that particular issue.

This kind of thing disgusts me. I wonder if there will ever be a time when idiocy and bigotry are gone from our culture? :(

You just have to ask yourself, what's the big deal? No one's asking you to be gay (if you aren't), so what do you care if someone else is? Sometimes I just look at people and it's just like, why do you care so much about being against something that does not affect you?

The issue in NC is that a LOT of NC is seriously anti-homosexual due to religious views. Because of that they picked the craziest loony bin Republicans they could find (no knock on Republicans in general, NC has had some pretty nice moderate Republicans in its time, not all of them Jesse Helms and such) because they wrapped themselves in support of the anti-gay marriage legislation.

The suckers went for it and now they have people who genuinely hate everyone not rich, white, straight and from North Carolina. So this becomes important because they are trying to crush any dissent to their hatred agenda. This teacher is simply the LATEST casualty. She tried to have a conversation that too many parents in NC avoid and got burned for it.

Exactly, think that's what amaze me the most. Why bother?
Surely there must be better things to spend your energy on.

Personally I don't even have the energy to care about stuff that actually matters... :p
