Michelle Rodriguez: Minority Actors Should "Stop Stealing" White Superheroes

--------------

I think she could have stated her opinion in a better way. By her own admission, the way she did state it came across as insensitive & stupid.

I agree that SOME characters, like Wonder Woman, should not be cast w/ a minority actress. BUT other characters like Nick Fury or Kingpin (who would only be known to veteran marvel comic readers) did NOT suffer for being cast w/ minority actors. Also, Catwoman, @ one point was portrayed by Eartha Kitt, so I dont know why Michelle (& others before her) are STILL stuck on Halle Berry being cast in the role in 2004. Characters that wear masks...why can't they be cast w/ a minority actor if it's possible? there's a REASON why the hashtag #OscarsSoWhite was trending all over twitter. Ppl seem to forget that it's not just hetero white males age 18-25 who read comics.

People are stuck on Halle Berry because she SUCKED in the role lol - if she had been good, they wouldn't care :D

Why shouldn't Wonder Woman be cast as a minority? How is that different from any other character?

you'll get no argument from me on her bombing in the role, Berry shouldnt play ANYmore super heroine roles on the big screen, IMO. She was wrong for STORM too. but there were ppl who cried out in protest as soon as the casting was announced, ppl who acted like it was "IMPOSSIBLE for Catwoman to be black" even though Eartha Kitt helped make the role famous on the small screen.

As for why Wonder Woman shouldnt be cast w/ a minority actor? Wonder Woman is a legacy character & is widely recognized in pop culture. I think it would be a mistake to alter her image, @ least in her initial outing on the big screen b/c ppl have an expectation based on what they've seen over the past few decades in comics & the small screen.

Well, not that I agree that Catwoman can't be black or asian or latina, but I can understand that the same way you have the way you picture Wonder Woman and think it is iconic, that some people would want the image they have of a character to be what's used on film.

I think for me, it's almost the opposite. I would care more if a minority character was played by a white person than the other way around. I guess because it seems more a part of their identity. Like I would expect Ted Grant to be latino, for example.

BUT I don't think they should have some quota of minority characters either and casting minorities just to say they casted minorities - they should pick whoever is best in the role that they are going to play.
