Marvel Comics Introducing a Muslim Girl Superhero - NYTimes.com

With most superheroes, when you take away the colorful costume, mask and cape, what you find underneath is a white man. But not always. In February, as part of a continuing effort to diversify its offerings, Marvel Comics will begin a series whose lead character, Kamala Khan, is a teenage Muslim girl living in Jersey City.

Kamala Khan is a teenage Muslim girl living in Jersey City.

No exploding planet, death of a relative or irradiated spider led to Kamala’s creation. Her genesis began more mundanely, in a conversation between Sana Amanat and Steve Wacker, two editors at Marvel. “I was telling him some crazy anecdote about my childhood, growing up as a Muslim-American,” Ms. Amanat said. “He found it hilarious.” Ms. Amanat and Mr. Wacker noted the dearth of female superhero series and, even more so, of comics with cultural specificity.

When they told G. Willow Wilson, an author, comic book writer and convert to Islam, about their idea, she was eager to come on board as the series’ writer. “Any time you do something like this, it is a bit of a risk,” Ms. Wilson said. “You’re trying to bring the audience on board and they are used to seeing something else in the pages of a comic book.”

Kamala, whose family is from Pakistan, has devotedly followed the career of the blond, blue-eyed Carol Danvers, who now goes by Captain Marvel, a name she inherited from a male hero. When Kamala discovers her powers, including the ability to change shape, she takes on the code name Ms. Marvel — what Carol called herself when she began her superhero career.

I'm personally a fan of anything that puts more brown people in my comics books, and I'm willing to give her a chance even is she's *shudder* from New Jersey

lmao
<<sigh>>

BK calls me a hater, I'll be that ;)

but seriously, I'm torn. I agree w/ BK that there does need to be more brown characters front & center in marvel, HOWEVER, i still maintain that there's been a small galaxy of brown characters that were available & have either been killed/depowered in one swoop or just left to fade in obscurity after one or two runs in a title @ the hands of a writer.

i feel like some of THEM (M, Silver Claw, 3D Man, Photon, among others) should be used too.

Let's not act like this character is THAT "ground breaking". There've been three other Ms. Marvels (Carol, Sharon, Valeria); she's not the 1st muslim character (Dust) & her power set? Hello...Mr. Fantastic? Ape (from the Morlocks), Warlock, Impossible Man!?

I feel like them saying she's a "devoted fan of Carol, who inherited the name of a MALE super hero" (as if she didnt already make a name for herself as the ORIGINAL Ms. Marvel) is a lazy tie-in. & while it's true, Marvel is still largely dominated by white male characters....there have been many notable characters to break the color/gender barrier.

I feel like they slapped "Ms. Marvel" (IV) on her b/c they just wanted the name back in print. Kind of like they did w/ Mattie Franklin when they dubbed her Spider Woman (III). In both cases, neither character had powers that were remotely reminiscent of what one would associate w/ those famous codenames.

& If this girl is an adolescent...why is she being called "MS."....why not "MISS", which would be more age appropriate?

oh as a note
M is going both in the run of X-factor that ended and the run that's about to begin

Photon is calling herself Spectrum and taking part in the Mighty Avengers (though it has art by Greg Land so ready your eyes to bleed)

A Muslim character staring in her own ongoing solo book unlike the characters you named written by a Muslim writer. I really feel like the name is making you sip that soul haterade. :p
