Rising Star
Easily the best X book out right now with Astonishing X-Men a close second. Both trades are out which cover the first year and it looks like we finally are getting a steady artist in Raimondi (Books of Doom, Madrox mini) who partnered with PAD on the Madrox mini and should have been doing X-Factor from the get go. Pick this book up!
Here's a couple of reviews I did for #13 and #14
#13 has the X-Factor squad once again seeing Doc Samson in an homage to 1993's X-Factor #87.
Thought it was a great issue as usual. Guido talks to him about his guilt about being brainwashed into killing someone for Tryp and Singularity Investigations. He figures that since a hypnotist told him that he could never make anyone do something they didn't have it in them to do then what did that really make him. Samson explains that it's not the same thing and Guido finishes the session with a Helen Keller joke. Syren tell the doc about how much better she's feeling after getting back together with Madrox and everything's going well till he asks her about her dad. She's STILL in denial about Banshee being dead which is AWESOME because it's about time writers start dealing with the emotional trauma all the deaths and rebirths these characters go through would really cause. M tells the doc about her horrible past with her brother and explains that she has to fight the urge to kill her self every day. She deals with it using her M persona. She also brings up Madrox having seduced her and her letting him, in her words "un-be-lievable". Layla beats the doc at chess rather easily while explaining that at the end of the day she feels that she’s just a pawn in a game she can’t control. Richtor tries to blow the whole thing off but the doc goads him into staying by making him realize that he should talk about how he feels about losing his powers. Madrox was the comedic gem of the issue though
Madrox: Rhane's coming in Later. She's been tough to talk to since Singularity. Something's going on and I can't convince her to open up.
Doc Samson: Really. Have you considered having sex with her?
Madrox: Ah.
Doc Samson: You could say that.
Madrox: Busted, huh?
Doc Samson: You could say that too.
Madrox: Bet this looks bad.
Doc Samson: Bet you're right. Theresa. Monet. Anyone else?
Madrox: Well, I wouldn't kick Richtor out of my bed...Kidding, I'm kidding.
Doc Samson: Interesting joke. Maybe you're overcompensating...
Other then that he was concerned about maybe not being an actual mutant and how he’s still as indecisive as ever even though he’s taken charge as the leader of the X-factor. Rhane and Quicksilver both see him after hours. Rhane told him about the vision of the future that Tryp showed her in which she killed Madrox and Layla on their wedding night and how all she wants to do is kill herself to stop it. But she can’t because she’s Catholic and believes she’ll go to hell if she does. So she figures she’s damned if she does as murders go to hell as well and damned if she doesn’t. Quicksilver gets asked if he’s evil to which he replied that while he may have inadvertently caused a situation which many saw as evil he did it for the greatest good there is, love. He figures now he’s doing good by giving mutants their powers back to make up for his past sins. He also thinks that the mutants get what they deserve in regards to whether the powers come out twisted or not, and that he’s not in control of that. The issue ends with Doc Samson walking down the street only to have Madrox and a dupe land on him after being thrown through a window by Monet. He thanks the doc for his advice about telling Monet and Syren the truth.
I won’t get any where near as in depth with 14 other then this little snippet
Richtor and Madrox sitting at a bar
Richtor: This about you and a dupe doin' the horizontal mambo with both Monet and Terry?
Madrox: Oh. And, uh...how did you..?
Richtor: I'm Rictor. I know stuff.
and
Richtor: So...fess up. Which filly was the wilder ride?
Madrox: You’re a pig, Ric, y'know that? A real pig.
skips two panels
Madrox: Monet.
Richtor: I knew it. I freakin' knew it.
and later still
Madrox: Fine. So... I notice Quicksilver's taken an interest in you lately. What's up with that?
Richtor: Nothing's "up." Dude's got a lot of interesting stuff to say, that's all. Keeps talking 'bout giving me my powers back. Not sure if that's on the level, though. So I've been, y’know.... feeling him out. No big deal. It ain’t' like I'm sleeping with him..."
next panel
Richtor: "...anymore."
at which point Jamie spits beer all over him.
Richtor: Could I get a towel here?
Madrox: You? And Quicksilver...?!
Richtor: Man, u'know, ever since you went all noir, you got, like, zero sense o'humor.
Madrox: So.. so it was a joke...
Richtor: 'Course. Not that the guy/guy thing is... it's just that Pietro's semi-evil, and -- Gimme a little credit huh?
and the last gem
Richtor: To X-Factor: Putting the "fun" in "dysfunctional." But, hey, at least y'know Pietro and I aren't an item, so that's good, right?
Madrox: I suppose. I mean, God knows you wouldn't want to make Shatterstar jealous.
At which point Richtor spits beer all over Madrox.
Other then that more fall out between M and Syren with Layla trying to fix things and Rhane and Guido confront the widow.
