As many of you know, I was taking some medical billing & coding courses b/c I want to get out of govt service & into the healthcare field.

In spite of all the set backs I had over the last two years, including being displaced for 30 days during the "Great Flood of 2010", having a serious health issue that put me in the hospital & other things, I perservered & completed my classes, passing the final exam w/ an 87% & graduating w/ a 950 out of 1000, giving me a solid "A" average.

I have my transcripts & everything to proove it.

Part of what enabled me to get through my classes was the campus director agreeing to renew my enrollment several times as needed. each request was legitimate & he signed off on each of them. Toward the end, he made it clear that in order to continue renewing my enrollment period, I had to demonstrate "continued progress" i.e. completing a unit exam every few weeks & a final exam for each course every 30 days.

It was rough but I did it, & I maintained my solid A average along the way. The director complimented me on my resolve, my attendance, my grades/effort & said I was one of the nicer students on campus!

NOW, after graduating from the campus/course work & taking time to move to my new residence & then recovering from a respiratory infection, I resumed prepping for my NHA certiication.

I made my profile on their website & it was accepted but when I tried to pick a test date, I couldnt. This was due to the fact that typically the University that I was attending offered onsite testing. But the campus I graduated from was CLOSING (another reason why I needed to hurry up & finish) so they don't offer it there.

NHA offers third party testing @ another site but in order for the cost of the exam to be covered by the school, which was part of the agreement of the school accepting my grant to cover the tuition, the SCHOOL has to register me.

So I called my former campus director, who had already transferred to another campus in another state. We still talked & corresponded via email. I told him what was going on & he said he'd get back to me today.

Well today, when I heard from him this morning, He informed me that corporate office of the school was "considering" taking the position that they would NOT cover the cost of my exam! when i asked why He told me their initial statement was "b/c she did not finish her courses within the 'ORIGINAL' enrollment period."

I said to him "you've got to be kidding me!? YOU know that there's no way I could have finished within the original enrollment period b/c I was displaced for 30 days due to the flood! YOU approved my leave of absence, which was recommended by my instructor! You also know the several other instances where I needed a renewal were all due to legitimate reasons-health issues etc which i provided documentation for & you once again signed off on each of them."

I asked him if HE knew that this would happen & he claims he didnt but his tone & demeanor during the conversation was QUITE different than it had ever been before in any of our previous encounters. Something didnt add up to me.

I said to him "this is outrageous. I FINISHED the program, i passed w/ an A average. I have the documents to proove it! Now after all I've been through to finish, you're telling me that the corporate office of this school is considering NOT paying for my NHA exam? that was part of the agreement when they accepted the funds for my tuition!"

He swore it was nothing He knew of & that it was over his head @ this point.

I ended my call w/ him & called corporate to confront them myself. The first time i called in, I got their "after hours voice answering service" ....this was @ 2 pm in the afternoon mind you :sure:

I called back TWICE & finally got through to the actuall office & demanded to speak w/ the financial officer.

This person was so rude & unfeeling & even though i had all my email correspondence w/ my campus director, copies of all my leave/renewal requests w/ Brent's signature & approval etc, she said 'b/c you didnt complete w/in the ORIGINAL enrollment period, we have determined that all coverage for exams is expired."

I told HER this was beyond unethical & that this wasn't over.

She said to me, "you can go to the NHA third party testing site & take the exam on your own, the cost is $105.00."

I was LIVID. I was MOMENTS away from EXPLODING on her ass, but instead, I just ended the call & now I'm getting ready for ROUND 2 of this.

I. AM. PISSED!

Not unusual...the school is doing this because it believes it can...PERIOD.

Call them back and inform them that someone had better be prepared to meet you at the courthouse for small claims court and that you plan to sue for additional damages as you consider this a willful and tortious attempt to renege on a legal obligation using a natural disaster as a cover. If they try to balk, ask who you should have served. Likely to get the response you want. If they call your bluff, have them served.

What does your original documentation about the cost being included say? Does it say anywhere that it has to be within the ORIGINAL enrollment period?

That sucks, Farrah. :( I know I had some issues a couple semesters ago when my financial aid kept getting denied because it said I had to claim myself as a dependent despite the fact I have to claim myself as an independent since i'm over 24 years of age. But my school said because I was living at home i'm a dependent. I'm like...wtf? FASFA says i'm independent lol. Luckily it was sorted out and the lady I was dealing with an idiot.

Garrick, you better believe the school is gonna get a HELL of a fight from me. What you mentioned is what I was already plotting to do, however, the FIRST step was for me to contact the govt. agency that awarded & disbursed my grant b/c when the school accepted my application & then accepted my grant as form of payment, they were among the select schools my job's "higher education" portal listed as those the govt. had a special contract w/ & the tution of the school is capped off @ the max allowed grant (if the perspective student qualifies & is awarded the full grant amt. which i did) & part of that contract is that ALL fees for graduation, dimploma, transcripts & state certification testing are COVERED BY THE SCHOOL.

Vil, i thought of that too & I pulled out ALL my paper work that I received when I enrolled & went through orientation @ the school. there's NOTHING in my enrollment agreement about any penalties associated w/ not finishing w/in the 'original enrollment period' nor does it say anything @ all about their being a "deadline" or that i MUST complete w/in the 'original enrollment period.' this situation is the first time i've EVER heard anything like that & my instincts SCREAM that the campus director either knew something about this OR even though he signed off on my leaves of abscense & assisted me w/ making sure my enrollment was renewed as needed that he was saying something else to their finance office @ their corporate office.

I have all my documentation regarded my LOA, the documents I submitted to verify the legitimacy, all the emails between myself & the director which show his seeming willingness to assist me & make sure I was able to finish etc. all the requests he approved & signed off on, but that doesnt mean there isnt a whole other paper trail of something else between him & corporate. the way he spoke to me the other day when I found out about this, it was like he was a totally different person & that makes me suspect him.

so after talking to my benefits administration coordinator from the agency that awarded me the grant & telling her what has happened, she was clearly surprised & pissed & she said "if they had some kind of clause about you MUST complete your course work w/in 'the original enrollment period' why wasnt it detailed in your agreement forms? why wasnt it brought to your attention by the campus director when you went on leave of absence during your displacement from your home during the flood?" she then said "this school has a contract w/ the govt & in return for accepting our grant money, they MUST cap the tuition & cover all extra fees [graudation, official diploma, copies of transcripts & first time NHA exam fee]. Their violating the contract, among other things & so we're going to look into this for you. If proper resolution isnt reached, this school will be heavily fined & lose its accreditation in this state."

She advised me to let them look into it & I told her that I'll wait till Friday & @ that time, I'm going ahead w/ MY plan to have them served (really it WILL be a "bluff" but I happen to work on the same floor as Service of Process & i can create a pretty spectacular bluff since I know the head of the dept. personally)

Sam, aint that some shit!? they make it so damn hard for a person to go to school & for what?

I was fortunate b/c I was able to tap into high education benefits from my job! After doing some research about It was a tremendous opportunity but now the school is trying to pull some bullshit & I believe that they have something on THEIR end that I don't have access to that they're trying to use as their justifcation but all my documentation, correspondence etc shows that I did what i was supposed to, not to mention my diploma from the school & gpa. in spite of all my struggles, i completed.

THIS is one of the reasons why "for profit" universities are not the best option. There's no way I would've gone to this school w/ out my grant b/c the tuition for someone walking in off the street is excessive & then there's all those extra fees they tack on.

When I move next year & return to a traditional title 4 university to complete my degree in healthcare administration (& i'm still speaking to an academic advisor @ the school i'm interested in for that to see how much of my BFA & the credits i have, not to mention my most recent schooling, will count toward experience/credit for that) I know that i'll have a hella headache navigating the financial aspect w/ fafsa & all that b.s. but just like i researched & found something to help me get to s chool here, i'm gonna do my best to do the same thing there.

that sucks beautiful, i think they make it purposely difficult for anyone to go to school but thats just a sign of the times that there is so much red tape between a person and a simple degree of any kind.

Wow. They may be within their rights to do that (I really don't know), but it certainly isn't the right thing to do. I'd fight too.

Update

well... driving for 3.5 hours to where the corporate office was & staying @ a hotel for several days, boldness & chutzpah paid off. I've won my case & the school WILL cover the cost of my exams, which are now scheduled for the 17th & 18th of this month!

I can't wait for this all to be over & done with.
