Isaiah Washington has lost his job on the hit ABC medical drama "Grey's Anatomy," five months after creating a furor with his use of an anti-gay slur.

Washington's contract option was not renewed for next season, series producer ABC Television Studios said Thursday.

"I'm mad as hell and I'm not going to take it anymore," Washington said in a statement released through his publicist, Howard Bragman, without elaboration.

He drew fire after using the anti-gay epithet backstage at the Golden Globe Awards in January while denying he'd used it previously on the set against cast mate T.R. Knight.

Gay rights groups and cast member Katherine Heigl, who publicly denounced Washington, were among his most vocal critics.

"This is something that will have changed the scope of his life," Heigl told Entertainment Weekly last month. Washington was "sorry and embarrassed" for the mistake, she said.

Washington tried to make amends and said he was seeking therapy.

He also met with officials from the Gay, Lesbian & Straight Education Network and the Gay & Lesbian Alliance Against Defamation and filmed a public service announcement in which he said "words have power" to hurt or heal.

The May finale of "Grey's Anatomy" opened the door for the departure of his character. Burke was on the verge of marrying Dr. Cristina Yang (Sandra Oh), but her doubts at first delayed and then derailed their splashy wedding.

Later, Yang found that Burke cleared out his favorite possessions from their apartment.

In May, Bragman said the actor intended to spend the summer working and not worrying about the show. Washington intended to continue his charity work in Sierra Leone, which a DNA test showed to be his ancestral home, and work on an independent movie.

That seems weird to me... they dont just fire someone because they say something against gay people, I would think the gay thing is just the most publically known thing going on... I mean we know he tried to beat the shit out of McDreamy and he is angry so I think that is more what he got fired over...

This show could be in trouble with Kate Walsh (Addison) leaving and now this? Perhaps Kate's show will be greatly successful, though I dont know how much excitement there will be... she is a neonatal surgeon right? meaning all her shows will revolve around baby patients? Not a real emergency room?

I’m not sad to see his character go, towards the end of this season Dr. Burke was becoming obnoxious and whiny ever since he got shot.
I really don’t care why they fired him it just proves he wasn’t right for the show.

I thought the spin-off was rather boring and Kate Walsh although is a good actress she lacks the acting skills to lead such a show. If anything, I think the spin-off will bomb as a lot of Grey’s fans such as myself have rejected the idea and refuse to watch.

Aww i'm pissed. I loved the Christina/Burke relationship and was looking forward to see what happened this coming season with them. And I disagree, Heather. I thought he fit perfectly into the show, in every aspect. The first two seasons pooved that. It was obvious there was tension toward the last season after what he said about TR Knight.

Personally, I was annoyed about what he said to TR. It was uncalled for, but that was months ago. He's obviously trying his best to show people he's not a bigot (could be a pub stunt, or sincere). This just blows.

As for Kate Walsh's spinoff...I was not too thrilled with it. It was boring. But i'm going to atleast watch a few episodes in the fall before tossing in the towel on that show.

the ironic thing is that Isaiah Washington FAMOUSLY played a GAY ROLE in Spike Lee's critically acclaimed film Get on the Bus, it was a story about a select group of men who came together while trying to get to the million man march and Washington's character was a "closeted" gay man in a relationship that was failing...his partner "outed" him during the bus ride to the million man march.

so i just wonder how or WHY he would have agreed to play a gay role if he has homophobic issues? maybe its just for the paycheck lol.

I liked the Burke character on Grey's and Isaiah is DAMN SEXY to me. his character was VERY MUCH intregal to the show's cast and plots and his relationship with Dr. Yang was one to watch not only because it was interracial (and how often do you see a successfull interracial couple on TV?) but because of how complex and delicate it was at times. but i dont like homophobic men...thats just as bad as being a racist. he was wrong for what he said and going to rehab after you've called somebody a fag /outed them and THEN saying it AGAIN at a nationally televised award show? that suggests more than ONE slip up of the tongue.

as for the spin off, i thought that was a bad idea as well. Addison wasnt really all that as a character and hardly has the strength to carry her own show.
