Grammys 2012

Happy for Adele. She deserved everyone of her aawards. I've been won over as a fan of her's.

WHAT THE HELL @ the tribute to Whitney Houston. yes Jennifer Hudson did a fine job...for singing a PORTION of one song...but what happened to Chaka Khan?

Why did Paul Mccartney get to perform TWICE & there was hardly ANY tribute to Whitney!

AWFUL!

Yeah, I didn't get it either. I understand that it was so last minute, but they could of allowed the show to run over 5 minutes and allowed a longer tribute to her. BUT, JHud did a fantastic job with what she was given.

And i've adored Adele since I heard Hometown Glory 3 years ago from her first record. Her voice is just amazing. And to only be 23? Her career hasn't even started and she's renowned as one of the best voices of my generation. I am SO glad she won every award she was up for. And i'm so glad she was able to KILL IT during her performance after vocal chord surgery. A surgery like that could end someone's career...look at Julie Andrews.

On a side note, I was freakin' amazed that Deadmau5 preformed!! He killed it. So glad they brought on some different music besides who's popular on the radio. And also, The Civil Wars mini performance before introducing Taylor Swift was awesome. I'm not really into folk music, but damn can they sing.

Deadmau5 couldve had his own segment & I would've preferred that over that SLOP of a "dance music tribute" they tried to tie to Don Cornelius. DC would NEVER have played the foo fighters on soul train & i dont know anyone who considers their music danceable. lil wayne either for that matter.

I've known about deadmau5 for some years too. He's a heavy fan fav @ the annual detroit electronic music festival.

For a while, I didnt understand the hype over Adele but when I started listening to other songs of her's besides Rolling deep...I really came to appreciate her talent. She seems like she's a sweetheart too. & you're right...that surgery she had very well COULD have ended her career. Julie Andrews is a prime (& sad) example. She showed us all that she's still got it. So glad.

Don't get me wrong...JHud did a fine job w/ what she had. You could see she was about to break down & me, britiny & toya (we were watching together) were all misty eyed ourselves. Chaka Khan cxl'ed her performance...she was far too upset. I can understand that. but there were others they couldve tapped into. Mary J. Blige, Kelly Price (who was in attendance), Faith Evans- all were influenced by Whitney & all have worked w/ her. JHud really is the only one I wouldve picked to touch that signature song of Whitney's ALTHOUGH i also thought they could've had Dolly Parton, the person who WROTE the song & gave her blessing to Whitney to cover it in "Bodyguard" might have been an option. Her version of it is obviously less vocally acrobatic than Whitney's but it woudve been like the song coming full circle. Just a thought I had.

The Grammys are supposed to be the gold standard of music awards shows...they shouldve done better w/ that. I realize that Whitney's passing less than 24 hrs before the show was completely unforseen...but still...it's Whitney freakin Houston! :(

Criticism of the Grammys

Chris Rizik: The 2012 Grammy Awards were a step backward for soul music | SoulTracks - Soul Music Biographies, News and Reviews

---------------
This article confirms what MANY ppl were saying on FB, twitter & offline. The grammys this year were BAD & definitely did not acknowledge music across the board.

He also points out what I said to Britini & Toya...about the HALF HEARTED nods to Whitney Houston & Etta James, who was shockingly ABSENT from the montage during the "In memorium" section of the grammys! Not to mention Don Cornelius.

They really didn't do a good job. If it hadn't been for LL Coo J, Don Cornelius wouldn't have been mentioned @ ALL & to have him tied to that SLOP of dance music tribute? <<FAMILY FEUD BUZZER>>

Honestly I think this is a little hypocritical of this guy - I mean, rock music has been on the back burner for years if not a decade at least, and now that it had an actual representation again ONE YEAR people are crying foul?

This guy needs to stop acting like these awards shows are the end all be all. It's an awards show, not a retrospective of all music. That Adele won all those awards shows how these awards are made with hype, not based on merit.

representation? it was more like the medicare country music awards more than anything.

I actually liked seeing the band that covered the beach boys & then the beach boys themselves....they did a good job w/ their singing & to be as old as they are they really showed the youth what musicianship is supposed to look & sound like.

but paul mccartney got to perform TWICE while Whitney Houston was BARELY acknowledged? that wasnt right. I don't care what genre of music a person likes...that just wasn't right. let's not get into the fact that John Lennon was the more creative Beatle either...he shouldnt have gotten to perform twice when there was other things or ppl that needed to be recognized.

the grammys is the gold standard of music award shows...or @ least it was...this year's grammys looked like a nostalgic nod to the segregated era of the south more than a show recognizing music & talent.

Whitney Houston was a drug addict, which everyone seems to be glossing over. Why should we put her upon some pedestal? Though, of course, no one cares anymore that Chris Brown beats up women either. But frankly it probably happened too quickly to change much about the show. There are contracts involved and you can't just say "Sorry Paul McCartney, you're not performing any more." Doesn't work that way. They did an appropriate amount of tribute: Jennifer Hudson sang her song (not as well) and they included her in the grammy montage of those who had passed away. Everyone and their brother commented on the loss. What more did you want?

I remember back in the day when rap got MAYBE one award at the grammy's while everything else was hair bands, then it became popular and ever since virtually ALL the awards are all about rap/R&B. Why is that okay but when a genre that actually features good songwriting becomes popular and starts taking awards, that's a nod to segregation? It's hypocrisy.

IMP the Grammy's is no longer the gold standard of anything - artists' popularity and nominations are based on showmanship rather than musical talent. It's a joke.

The industry is full of drug addicts; if you decide that drug use is a disqualifying factor you may as well close the Grammys. In the end, we lost an iconic singer and I did not even watch because I saw the snub coming.

As for ALL of the awards being about R&B or rap, I checked...I don't see it. If anything, I see a genre that continues to get pretty much robbed most years. And good songwriting has no genre, I hope that the insinuation I am reading above is unintended.

What insinuation is that?

I remember being in middle school/high school and seeing the music I listened to (rap) not represented at all in awards shows. And then the tide turned. It's not racist because MAYBE the tide of awards has turned again. Which I don't think it has - Foo Fighters winning 5 awards a sea change does not make.

I still see absolutely no snub as far as Whitney is concerned. Should the entire show have been about her? Those things don't turn on a dime and her death only happened 2 days before. But what has happened is that the opportunity has been lost to show an example of someone who had everything, all the opportunities, all the talent in the world, and she threw it away. That's something to show today's children rather than pretending like using drugs is some right of passage of fame that they should emulate.

As for songwriting...I have a theory that country music has become more popular in recent times because that is pretty much the only outlet for songwriters who normally in the past would have found outlet on "pop" stations but because the industry has skewed so far into basing success on presentation and hype they no longer can go there. So musicians who would probably be more pop or rock start out on the country charts because that's the only place for them in today's industry. So songs that would have been mainstream ten years ago are now showing up as "country" because that's the only place they can get airtime.

wow. so are you suggesting b/c whitney had a problem w/ drugs that erases her legacy? her contribution to music? really?

paul mccartney is a womanizing asshole & had problems w/ drugs & gambling as well so how does that make him any more worthy by your argument?

Like garrick said, most of the damn entertainment industry is on drugs. MANY OF THE PEOPLE who appeared/performed last night are past/present addicts of some kind beach oys, bonnie rait, alicia keyes ALL have/had issues w/ drugs. so i dont know why whitney houston's problem is something you'd bring up as if to say she's LESS deserving of recognition that she deserves.

we grew up w/ her music...our generation knows best "The voice" (which is what she was called across the industry). yes she had her problems...as do her peers & most of us. your statement sounds harsh & judgemental to me.

whitney houston was acknowledged by LL cool J, Alicia Keyes & Jennifer Hudson. She (rightfully) got her own spot in the memorial tribute (while Etta James & Don Cornelius were OMITTED & yet Steve Jobs was included??). So i hardly think "everybody & their brother" acknowledged her.

"virtually all awards are about rap/r&b?" well rap & r&b are two different genres for one thing so their awards don't overlap. secondly MANY rap categories have been eliminated from the grammys over the past few years. & why are most award shows seemingly about rap & r&b these days? b/c that's what MOST consumers are purchasing & who purchases/consumes the most "hip hop" in today's society? WHITE ppl.

who said nobody cares about chris brown assaulting rihanna? did you hear the booing in the audience? i did. have you seen the backlash for him beating other more DESERVING artists for the award he ultimately won? its all over the net. i dont know how you can speak for EVERYBODY by saying "nobody cared" when plenty of ppl, myself included didnt appreciate his appearence much less his WIN on the show.

the grammys sucked. they got a huge increase in viewership this year....50% higher than last year...b/c ppl wanted to see what they'd do to honor whitney houston & most of those ppl, myself included, were disappointed.

wow. so are you suggesting b/c whitney had a problem w/ drugs that erases her legacy? her contribution to music? really?

No, I'm saying we shouldn't pretend like she's a saint and gloss over the bad choices in her life, the same way we shouldn't for a Kurt Cobain. I'm saying let's stop erasing celebrity faults and call spades spades, stop glorifying things like drug use. Let's start saying, "This is what happens when you abuse drugs. Even someone who soared as high as Whitney Houston - drugs ended up killing her."

paul mccartney is a womanizing asshole & had problems w/ drugs & gambling as well so how does that make him any more worthy by your argument?

It doesn't. He shouldn't get an entire awards show focused on him either. Whitney had a very nice tribute to her made and I'm not sure why more was expected?

Like garrick said, most of the damn entertainment industry is on drugs.

Doesn't make it okay or something to praise or forget about.

& why are most award shows seemingly about rap & r&b these days? b/c that's what MOST consumers are purchasing & who purchases/consumes the most "hip hop" in today's society? WHITE ppl.

I just don't think because more white people won awards this year, it's a racist plot. If white people buy rap, r&B, what have you records they're racist, and if they don't, they're racist. You can't say, "Rap & R&B acts get more awards show time because they're popular, but country music acts get more awards time because the people in charge are racist." For whatever reason country music has gotten really popular in the last year or two, and an awards show is going to reflect that, whether we like it or not. The same way hair bands dominated awards shows in the late 80s early 90s when all I wanted to see was KRS or LL.

that particular statement i agree with. just like what happened w/ "alternative" music that gained popularlity in the early to mid 90s & how they want on to dominate shows

i wouldnt say its a racist plot either, but i think was a step BACKWARD in the times that we live in & i think that certain things couldve been handled differently...better. i understand that the show had long been in place & that whitney's death was a mere 24 hrs before & no one could have anticipated that...but for pete's sake...even the BET awards did a better job of pulling together a last minute tribute for MJ, who died the day before & THAT is one of THE WORST "award shows" ever. I only tuned in to see what they'd do for MJ. Surely the grammys couldve done better. That's just my expectation given the reputation this particular show has.

I AGREE w/ you that her life @ a certain point became a sad, ultimate cautionary tale about what can happen to ANYONE who does drugs. It robbed her of that glorious instrument that was her voice...& that was very sad to know even before her death. But to be FAIR- we dont knnow the official cause of her death yet. autopsy results revealed water in her lungs & the toxicology results have not returned yet & so anofficial cause of death hasnt been announced. the drugs found in her hotel room were prescription & the police said there wasnt an extraordinary amount of prescription bottles present..."no more than what an average person might have in their medicine cabinet."

I'd say lets wait to hear what the results are before we pass judgement on her. Ppl did the same thing w/ Amy Winehouse & no drugs were even found in her system after her death.

I understand what you're saying about people in general glorifying bad behavior. we've talked about that before & i agree w/ you on that but not EVERYONE does that & being supportive of an artist on whitney's level doesnt mean you [have to]glorify or condone her drug use. I was rooting for her comeback. I wanted her to get BETTER & try to restore that damaged instrument of her's :( but now that'll never happen.

Whitney had sole custody of her. Now she's with...her father. :sure: She's been in the hospital TWICE for stress & anxiety following her mother's death. It sounds as if she's devistated. :( poor baby.

I agree with the worry about Bobbi Christina.

As far as the cautionary tale that possibly should have been told? We didn't tell it with Cobain or with Winehouse. So I am not ready to start telling it because it is Whitney.

At least in those cases their drug abuse was heavily mentioned. I haven't heard anyone say anything about it at all in Whitney's case. And that's what I have a problem with.

Interesting...her troubled life is all I seem to hear about. I even hear about Bobbi Christina and drugs and the blaming of Bobby Brown. But a lot less about her music than I would like.

agreed. that's all we've heard about over the years. its even been spoofed on SNL & Mad TV
