Why "Glee" was no Justin Bieber at weekend box office

LOS ANGELES (TheWrap.com) - Releasing the "Glee The 3D Concert Movie" into 2,040 theaters Friday, one Fox executive described the studio as being in "uncharted waters."

Fox's expectations weren't big for its first dip into the 3D concert-movie arena -- "mid-to-high single digits," the executive said -- but they had to anticipate that the waters were a little deeper than the film's opening weekend performance of just $6 million.

Well, I'm no fan of Glee & I don't see it as the cultural phenomena that some ppl suggest that it is. I did enjoy the episode "The power of Madonna", for obvious reasons but outside of that, I don't watch it.

Seems to me like Fox (the same network who once was on top w/ shows like Beverly Hills: 90210 & Melrose Place), is just trying to get as much money as they can, anyway they can. Are we really going to be talking/hearing about this show 10 years from now? I can't say for sure but I kinda doubt it. Everything about glee looks & feels contrived to me whenever I look @ clips of the show.

I remember when Dynasty was on the air- now THAT was an example of a cultural phenomena- one that historians still talk about today & how few shows since have caused anything like it. Ppl getting dressed up in their finest, just to host Dynasty viewing parties in their home; a lucrative & successfull line of products/tie ins like perfumes, dolls, costume jewelry, Bloomingdales even featured a "Dynasty" department where ppl could by clothes that looked like the fashions Joan Collins, Linda Evans & Diahann Carroll wore; Joan Collins single handedly making ladies hats a fashion staple again in the 80s & 90s, the actors & actresses doing commercials (Linda Evans doing "crystal light" commercials - a play on her character's name 'Krystle') & the press tours...which ended after someone was sadly trampled to death @ bloomingdales flagship store due to so many ppl thronging the event & the cast could no longer make public appearences.

This doesn't really surprise me actually. A hit television show, yes. A movie, especially about their tour? No. A hit movie, especially about their tour all in 3D? Hell no! If it was a movie as in the show and not their tour? I would go see it.

I did go see them when they were in Toronto. It was fantastic! I love this show.

If it weren't in 3D I would totally go and see it. But I refuse to go see 3D movies simply because they are the latest 'trend'. It's nothing special anymore. Even the upcoming movies have 3D. Grrr...Arrgh. Sorry for my mini rant.

im w/you on the 3D b.s. suddenly everybody is using it. its just another way to nickle & dime customers @ the damn box office for tickets that are already overpriced  i boycott that shit.

and no need to apologize about a rant :) speak your mind! that's what the board is for!

If people wanted to go see the concert they'd have seen it, bit pointless having the movie of the concert when the concert was just on!

I think the people behind Glee need to be careful.
To me it feels like it is getting to much now. I enjoy Glee, I like the show. But with the tour and now the concert movie? I mean, come on, take a break please.
If I had followed and kept track of all that I think I would be quite fed up with Glee even before the new season has started.

It probably works great for the hardcore fans but is it enough of them to keep the ratings up high enough?
For more "normal" fans like me I really think they need to slow down a bit and not over do it.

Glee used to be huge when it first came out. I mean, that's ALL I heard about, and personally I thought it sounded so stupid. But I actually caved and started watching from the very beginning about half way through the first season and I thought it was a really great show. Groundbreaking? Not so much, but it was entertaining and it really focused on kids were were outcasts which is a great message for youths today.

However as the second season came out, the show started to just become repetetive with their storylines and the way they always focused on Rachel [Lea Michele's] character. At one point I couldn't keep up with how many ballads she was singing while attempting to look like she was crying. It just became annoying. However, the second season did have a fabulous storyline about gay bullying with Kurt [Chris Colfer] which won him a well deserved Emmy. His character salvaged that season for me, along with Brittany who is severely underused.

As for the movie? They should have done that during the first season. I bet you anything it would have been a HUGE success. But they waited to long. I think Fox and the creators of Glee still think it has this fire that it had during it's first season, but it doesn't. Plus, anything that isn't CGI [like Avatar or 300 type movies] shouldn't be in 3D, period. It's just stupid and another way to make money. Don't even get me started on the 3D bullshit lol.
