As drought hits corn, biotech firms see lush field in GMO crops - latimes.com

WOODLAND, Calif. — The worst U.S. drought in half a century is withering the nation's corn crop, but it's a fertile opportunity for makers of genetically modified crops.

Agricultural biotechnology companies have been pouring hundreds of millions of dollars into developing plants that can withstand the effects of a prolonged dry spell. Monsanto Co., based in St. Louis, has received regulatory approval for DroughtGard, a corn variety that contains the first genetically modified trait for drought resistance.

Seed makers, such as Pioneer Hi-Bred International Inc. of Johnston, Iowa, and Swiss company Syngenta, are already selling drought-tolerant corn varieties, conceived through conventional breeding.

So is anyone else just a little scared of these plants being sold without labels, while i am a fan of the idea of modifying crops I don't think they should be served without proper labeling and through study of potential side effects

Yeah that whole thing is totally scary. All you have to do is look at all those "lawsuit" ads on tv because of this drug or that drug to see that what we think is safe today might not be safe tomorrow.

:(

Genetically modified stuff is indeed scary but there is one issue: there are too many people.

WAAAAAY too many.

We HAVE to have crops that are as close to drought-proof as we can get or one day soon we will be figuring out who will eat and live and who will not and die.

The cancer stuff...meh. We all will get cancer if we live long enough.

Monsanto is the devil :sure: & its getting harder & harder to be able to purchase local, organic food b/c Monsato is actually bullying/suing local farmers & urban farm co-ops out of business! its ridiculous! you KNOW something's bad when Russia, Germany & several other large countries ban it & that's just what they did when it came to corn & other products from Monsato. They constantly lobby (successfully) to block any legislation that requires labels that indicate the food is gmo & what's in it. WHY?

i stopped shopping @ kroger for produce & other items 2 years ago b/c you can't tell what's what & their little usda stickers are meaningless. Ive been shopping @ a small, family owned grocery store for the last 2 years. they only have 2 stores & all their produce is locally grown & organic, their meats are grass fed & treated humanely. they're being attacked by Monsato & other gmo advocates even now.
