According to Deadline,ABC made an official announcement August 7th, confirming their cancellation of long-running, hit show “Desperate Housewives” after season 8. It was originally planned to go 9 seasons. However the show’s producer Marc Cherry decided to step down, but he will consult for season 8.

I think the writing started to get sloppy after season 3 myself. Vanessa Williams' arrival brought some spice back but the writing still isnt tight like it used to be. But its obvious ABC is just on an anti soap/drama rampage right now so while its sad, its not as surprising.

i watched about 2 or 3 seasons of it but it really seems like a cancellation is coming out of no where-ish. Isn't this still one of their (ABC) best rated shows?

I used to love Desperate Housewives. The first 3 seasons were by far the series best. After that it started going down hill. I personally stopped watching after Dana Delaney left in season 6 [I believe]. I just couldn't get into it anymore, and the storylines became repetitive and just unrealistic.

Come to think of it, I used to watch so many dramas on ABC, but now I think I only watch one drama on that station [Private Practice]. I just don't get this whole reality/food/body makeover/blah blah blah shit they're turning that network into--both daytime and nighttime.
