I am not a big soaps fan; I grew familiar with them from my Mom and her sisters as I grew up and in dealing with various women... in my time let's say. But even I knew who these two people were and the news and resulting blog was somewhat shocking to me with so many young soaps fans here. Courtesy of Yahoo!

Are Daytime Soaps Doomed?

On Wednesday, "Days of Our Lives" announced that it was firing two of the soap's biggest stars: Deidre Hall and Drake Hogestyn. I was shocked and saddened by the news. Can you imagine the town of Salem without Marlena (aka "Doc") and John?

Thanks to budget cuts "Days" execs reportedly had to let go of the highly-paid actors in order to keep their show on NBC for another 18 months, but with a bloated cast of 31, couldn't they have axed some of the newbies instead of these beloved vets?

When I asked my friend -- who works in the soap industry -- for his initial reaction to the news and what it means for the future of daytime, he responded, "You might as well sound the death knell."

That's what I was afraid of. I used to write for a soap magazine many years ago, so daytime holds a special place in my heart. I'm also fiercely protective of the genre, which people love to knock. "The acting's horrible" and "the storylines are ridiculous" are two common criticisms. Yes, at times they are, but let me remind everyone that Kevin Bacon, James Earl Jones, Tommy Lee Jones, Demi Moore, Julianne Moore, Hayden Panettiere, Ryan Phillippe, Meg Ryan, and Marisa Tomei are just a few of the Hollywood stars who got their starts in daytime. And since "Guiding Light," which is the longest-running drama in TV history, hit the radio airwaves in 1937, soaps' silly stories have provided fans with a daily form of escapism. Of course, it's been hard to keep these tales fresh over the years, which is why some writers have resorted to penning the absurd, supernatural plots that have turned many a soap fan off.

With that said, daytime ratings continue to dip, and it's really no surprise. Although there are plenty of male fans out there, soap operas were originally aimed at housewives. As we all know, there aren't as many stay-at-home moms as there used to be, and if someone does happen to be watching TV during the afternoon, they have hundreds of cable channels and programs to choose from. Plus, with everyone's busy schedules, people simply don't have the time to devote to a daytime serial anymore.

I'm not making any great revelations here. Everyone in the soap industry is fully aware of its problems, but they don't seem to know how to solve them. In an attempt to boost ratings, the network suits have decided that what they need to do is attract young, new viewers, which, let's face it, ain't happening.

According to my soap insider friend, instead of firing vets like Hall and Hogestyn, who longtime fans adore, the soaps should work on preserving what they have. “I don't really think you're ever going to get new viewers," he continued. "The days of moms and grandmas turning their kids on to their stories are long gone. The next best hope is to attract lapsed viewers -- fans who left for a reason, who were disappointed in how their stories were being written and how their favorites were being fired."

As much as I hate to say it, I’m not sure if the soaps can be saved, but in staying true to the genre's form, a dramatic death is inevitable.

dude..... the cancellation of soaps would be... unamerican, right? It sounds absurd! I mean, i'm not a HUGE fan, i like some characters on ONE soap... my mom likes another soap, etc.

it just seems really bizarre to hear that Days of Our Lives is firing people in order to extend their run for EIGHTEEN MONTHS.... DOOL is ANCIENT... and a classic [as are they ALL, basically :p] for them to cancel.... seems so surreal.

Yeah, I read that article on a soap site I frequent, and as a huge soap fan it does worry me that they could die off. I mean, the ratings have dipped to their lowest the past few years, and without viewers, the budget to make the soaps drastically descreases. Which eventually will mean they just don't have the money to make them anymore.

All the ABC soaps used to have previews at the end of each show up until a few months ago because it cost too much to make. They stopped Super Soap Weekend after 13 years this past year because of money [I believe that's what I read]. It's even been rumored that ABC, NBC, CBS, and even SoapNet don't want to air the Daytime Emmy's this year. It hasn't been confirmed, but that would be one more nail in the coffin if it's true in my opinion.

As a big GH fan, I would hate to see the show end. I've been an avid watcher for YEARS and I would be so depressed. :(

this is rather shocking. I too grew up with soaps, between my mom, aunts and baby sitter there were a variety of shows that I considered "Favorites" such as The Young & The Restless, Guiding Light (in the 80's) , The Bold & The Beautifull, As the World Turns (gotta love Lucinda Walsh!) (which I remember watching its world premier in 1987) and of course my absolute fav, ALL MY CHILDREN (gotta love Erika Kane!).

Its amazing how I (or anyone) could watch and keep up with so many soaps at any given point and even if you fall off the show, you can always get back on track especially now thanks to soap magazines, soapnet, the intenet lol.

These shows have been around for so long that different generations...my mom, then me and then sam (for example) ALL can remember various eras, characters and storylines from the same show! i think thats amazing.

There are so many things that happened on various soaps that have become moments listed in POP CULTURE HISTORY such as when RICHARD SIMMONS guest starred on GH in the early 80's LOL! i also remember the classic GH opening theme. Marlena's (Deidre Hall) demonic posession in 1993; The big shoot out at Roxy Shane's wedding on Guiding Light; Luke and Laura's wedding on OLTL, The debut of Erika Kane (Susan Lucci) in Pine Valley on AMC WAYYYYY back in the late 60's.

So many A-list or well known celebrities got their start on daytime soaps...and even though I dont watch day time soaps on the regular anymore, i just cant imagine television without them...its a really sad prospect to ponder :(
