in the music industry...there are many forms of success. Yes there are many powerfull, history making women in the music industry...but you wont ever see anyone dancing to a Barbara Streisand (For example) remix

let's take a look at the women in music who have made us dance for the last 3 decades.

here's an intial list to get us started:

Madonna
Cher
Janet Jackson
Martha Wash
Diana Ross
Chaka Khan
Gladys Knight ( 80's only)
Cece Peniston
Whitney Houston

there are others i'm sure...but some just stand out above the rest and the women i listed above are probably the most enduring and successfull.

your thoughts? opinions? anyone ELSE you'd like to mention?

Donna Summer
Whitney Houston

Two women I think deserve mention. While Houston is known more for her ballads, she has lots of fast hits, almost all of which hit big in clubs in the 80s.
And Donna Summer is an all-timer.

at some point...like around 1998, Whitney Houston figured out that she could have her songs remixed into dance hits and they were WILDLY successfull in clubs (especially the gay clubs).

"its not right but its okay"

"my love is your love"

" I learned from the best"

all were hits in their original forms but then they took on NEW LIFE as dance remixes.

so i can agree about Whitney..because in the late 90's when she started taking a grittier r&b sound, she also discovered the world of dance remixes lol.

I forgot about Donna Summer!

My mother told me how she was "the madonna of the 70's" and her titillating songs were banned from some radio stations because they were considered too racy and sexy at the time.

Donna Summer is the "Disco Queen", she made it possible for Janet, Madonna and Cher to "reinvent and bring back" the disco/techno sound in the late 90's...i remember an article in vibe magazine specifically saying this and how i completely agreed with it.

Dance has always been a heavy influence on my musical selection along with the artists I listen to. Even at an early age I had been introduced to this genre, including the leading ladies that paved the way to future stars like Britney Spears, Mandy Moore, Jessica Simpson, etc.

Besides A - Listers like Madonna, Cher, Donna Summer, etc. I grew to adore artists such as Deborah Cox, Amber, Crystal Waters, Kylie Minogue, Mariah Carey, Anastacia, Billie Myers, Cyndi Lauper, Taylor Dayne to name a few of my favorites.

Deborah Cox also did what Whitney did, taking many of her already established hits (most notably "Nobody's supposed to be here") and having it remixed into a dance track that also became a hit. BOTH women used the services of Rodney "Darkchild" Jerkins....and Cher also tapped into him for remixing some of her older songs into dance tracks for today's club kids.

ahhh Taylor "tell it to my heart" Dayne!! i loved her voice and Anastacia kind of reminds me of Taylor with that same strong , gritty voice. If you didnt see these women in magazines or on the covers of their records/cd's..you might not immediately guess they were white.

I didnt care for Amber because it seemed like all her songs had the same synthesized beat rhythm. like EVERY SONG had the same beat/tempo and there was no difference to them. but there was one dance track she did called "Love one another" that had a nice futuristic sound to it that i enjoyed.

Deborah definitely has dance diva written all over her. Granted, more people think of Madonna and the like but her songs are easily recognizable. Her voice in my opinion is unique, although she does tend to remake classic songs like I think "Something happened on the way to heaven", that 80's hit by Phil Collins. I remember hearing it not even piecing it as a Phil Collins song lol until I browsed the lyrics. :D She's one of my favorites and I would definitely go see her.

Taylor Dayne was huge in the 80's and 90's, I remember my brother playing her stuff, and it was all over the radio. She sort of reminded me of Samantha Fox slightly with some of her songs.

Amber is probably my favorite for dance artists. Her hits like "One more night", "Sexual", "Yes", "This is your night" really captured my attention. "Love one another" was another hit. I thought each of her songs and tempo's varied. "Sex and the city" was good too, I believe that was the theme song for the television show, which was equally catchy and provocative.

Besides dance Diva's I have to give kudos to La Bouche and the Real Mccoy, both equal favorites of mine. I thought Melanie from La Bouche possessed a unique voice. Although I was saddened to see she was killed in a plane accident like Aaliyah.

I'm not sure if she would count but Diana Ross has some bouncy songs that were easily recognizable. I think "Upside down" or something lol. She's a true DIVA in general lol.

I almost forgot Luscious Jackson, her song "Naked eye" was always stuck in my head and her album isn't bad. Although I'm not sure if she technically counts as "dance diva."

Not only "Upside Down" but "I'm Coming Up" as well.

I have to give a man props here for a great dance diva. Anyone remember Barry White?

Barry White would be a DEVO (the male version of a diva lol) aside from a select few songs...i always thought B W was more condussive to "dancing" between the sheets LOL!

I mentioned Diana Ross in my first post....her song "Love Hangover" was a cross between a ballad and a dance track and Mariah did an excellent version of that song at the "Divas 2000" concert.

Lisa Lisa and the Cult Jam!! anyone remember HER and that group?

Lisa was great, I loved that one song I forgot the name of it. "Love you" or something. Its that one song going something like "Oooh baby, I love you from head to toe." Another song I got stuck in my head. She kinda reminded me of the early Gloria Estefan with Miami Sound Machine.
