Heart Attack
North Carolina has been making the news left & right for it's governor's increasingly harsh legislation against the most vulnerable citizens in his state, the homeless & the poor. Other large municipalities across the country are also passing similar harsh laws as they attempt to "revitalize" their downtown & city centers.
They're also going after churches & charities that try to help the homeless.
Now I can understand wanting to protect citizens from aggressive pan handling. I've had that happen to me & it's not pleasant but these laws & initiatives go far beyond that. The NC governor proposed keeping an emergency winter shelter opened 2 more months into spring as one way to help the homeless as his laws & the enforcement of them push the homeless out of the city...BUT he also mentioned that anyone who DOESNT go to these shelters would be arrested!
Down here in Nashville, police will ticket ppl for little more than STANDING somewhere "too long" if they appear to be homeless. Essentially their very existence is becoming illegal! I don't think that's right.
& then you have ppl who say callous things about homeless &/or ppl who are on some type of gov't assistance- "get a job" etc. judging w/out knowing the person's circumstances.
40% of WORKING americans are homeless! The U.S. has 18.5 MILLION VACANT homes....& approximately 3.5 million homeless! That's enough to provide every homeless person w/ 6 homes EACH! B/c of corporate controlled gov't & a completely impotent congress, the economy is growing @ a VERY slow rate & the majority of jobs being added are low skilled "service sector" jobs that pay "Povery/Starvation" wages (think Walmart, McDonalds etc) & even if a person has this type of job & works FULL TIME or even adding 10 hrs of overtime, they STILL don't make enough to afford even a BASIC apartment rent in many states across the country, let alone food & other essential expenses. I think about these things & it makes me shudder b/c most of us are only 1-2 paychecks from being busted ourselves.
There's alot going on here & very little of it is in favor of the ppl. I think it's just shameful the way local & state govt's are now basically making the very existence of a person who's homeless illegal. why not put pressure on these banks to do something POSITIVE for a change & put these MILLIONS of homes to use? instead of wasting time & $ on legislation & enforcement of it why not follow the example of other countries like Australia or places in the netherlands & use that $ & effort for drug treatment & other rehabilitation/medical care/job training & placement assistance programs to help ppl get on their feet??
Ppl these days act like "it's not my responsibility" to even show COMPASSION until something happens to THEM & then they're the first ones w/ their hand out expecting the same help they felt someone else was so underserving of....
What say you?
