Congress seeks debt solution, Obama goes to public
WASHINGTON (AP) — Racing the debt clock, Congress is working on dual tracks while President Barack Obama appeals to the public in hopes of influencing a deal that talks have failed to produce so far.

My view on this article:
I've been reading polls that suggest more than 70% of the voting public firmly blame Bush, the republicans for the debt crisis & this session of congress for the utter lack of progress in dealing with it. Regardless of what political party you claim (or not) just watching things as they unfold, it seems to me that the republicans in congress (now dominated by the tea party) have cared more about political posturing than opening their eyes to the reality & necessity of COMPROMISING. if the US debt rating is downgraded....what will happen then?
severe cuts (which disproportionately target the weak, old, poor & those who need help) is NOT going to magically balance this budget. why arent the republicans being real w/ themselves & realizing that "Reganomics" DOESNT WORK. giving the rich (top 2 to 20%) & corporations these continued tax breaks & loopholes is NOT helping! Two of Regan's own economic advisors from his cabinet were on CNN late last year & early this year saying flat out that the tax breaks on the rich & corporations need to end. that revenue alone would go a long way in being a GOOD START in truly attacking the debt crisis. I'm not suggesting "take from the rich & give to the poor." no, they've earned their money (presumed) BUT they SHOULD pay their taxes just like the rest of us & the reality is that if you're in a "higher income bracket" you pay more taxes! the end.
GE (general electric) this conglomerate posted profits in the BILLIONS last year & yet when their tax payment record was made public it showed they didnt even pay 10% of the tax they SHOULD have. why isnt this company dismantled & its ceo's , board of directors etc in JAIL!? let that have been Citizen Q not paying their income tax for a year & the IRS wouldve seized all their shit & carted them off to jail.
so yeah...my personal opinion is that TAXES (escaped by those who have benefited too long from regan/bush tax cuts) need to be paid so revenue can at least start to be generated & yes cuts will have to be made, but deliberately targeting the weak, poor, elderly based on stereotypes & generalizations about all people who use any given form of govt aid is not right either.
