Chris Brown's squeaky clean image falters

LOS ANGELES – At this point, Chris Brown would have been better off getting caught with a bong. At least then, the scandal enveloping his white-hot career could have been dismissed by some as a youthful indiscretion.

But Brown's arrest in connection with an alleged assault of a woman has potentially devastating implications for the 19-year-old heartthrob because it unravels the charming, wholesome image that fans know and love.

"If it's true, his career is probably over," said Billboard magazine's editorial director, Bill Werde, although he cautioned that "it's important to withhold judgment until all of the facts are known."

On a night in which Brown was supposed to deliver a prime-time Grammy performance, he was instead being processed in a Los Angeles police station on a charge connected to an alleged assault on a woman reports have identified as Rihanna, the 20-year-old pop princess. Brown was booked on a suspicion of making a criminal threat after he and a woman had an argument that escalated into a fight in a ritzy Los Angeles neighborhood, according to police; Rihanna and Brown pulled out of the Grammys hours before the Sunday telecast.

Brown nor his representatives have made statements about the case, and the only comment Rihanna's publicist has made was to say that the statuesque star was doing "well."

Already there was immediate fallout from Brown's arrest, with Wrigley stopping all ad and marketing campaigns tied to Brown, who had been their Doublemint gum pitchman. The singer also withdrew from planned appearances at the upcoming NBA All-Star Game, scheduled for this weekend in Phoenix, NBA spokesman Tim Frank said in an e-mail.

"Wrigley is concerned by the serious allegations made against Chris Brown. We believe Mr. Brown should be afforded the same due process as any citizen," the company said in a statement. "However, we have made the decision to suspend the current advertising featuring Brown and any related marketing communications until the matter is resolved."

Brown rose to fame as a sweet-faced, 16-year-old with an engaging voice and amazing dance skills with the 2005 smash hit "Run It!" Since then, his popularity has mushroomed; he's been featured in movies such as dance flick "Stomp the Yard," had top-selling tours and a string of hits, including "Forever" and "No Air" with Jordin Sparks, for which he was nominated for a Grammy on Sunday.

He was named Billboard's top artist for 2008 and won three American Music Awards last fall, including artist of the year.

Rihanna's star is just as bright. The pop singer had one of 2007's most popular songs with "Umbrella" and the string of hits has not stopped: She has a Top 10 Billboard pop hit right now with "Live Your Life" with T.I. and a few others still on the charts.

Her stunning looks have made the Barbados native a cover girl for magazines, as well as a pitchwoman for Cover Girl cosmetics.

The pair started dating about a year ago, and while they never officially confirmed their romance, they were often spotted together, cuddling or holding hands.

Tracey Ford, the editor of AOL Music's hip-hop/R&B site, TheBoombox.com, said fans are shocked over the allegations, adding that Brown's career has been centered around his "squeaky clean image.

"I don't think anyone saw this coming."

Perhaps the most recent pop star to face a legal crisis was Brown's record-label mate, R.Kelly, who was charged, and later acquitted, of child-pornography charges. He continued a multiplatinum career even as the legal saga dragged through the courts for years.

But Kelly never had a wholesome image and built much of his career on coarse sexual songs.

Brown, on the other hand, has been pitched at a teen idol who, while having considerable sex appeal, is still ultimately safe. He's recently been nominated for Nickelodeon's Kids Choice Awards and last December was the headliner at a concert thrown by New York radio station Z100. Geared mainly toward squealing teens, he drew ear-piercing shrieks as he closed out the concert, a gig that featured a cameo appearance by Rihanna.

Ford said it was "it's really too early to tell at this point" what will happen with his career.

"He certainly missed an opportunity last night at the Grammys to take his career to the next level," she said. "I'm not sure whether or not it's going to completely hurt him yet."

Brown was near the end of promoting his platinum-selling "Exclusive" CD and was concentrating on filming movies.

As for Rihanna, she will likely emerge from the incident with more fans, and sympathy, Ford said.

"It might actually help Rihanna, to a certain extent," she said. "She's definitely being viewed as the victim at this point."

LOS ANGELES - New details have emerged over the alleged incident on Sunday morning between Chris Brown and a woman who authorities have not officially identified, but a source tells Access Hollywood is Rihanna.

The source told Access Hollywood that Chris Brown allegedly hit Rihanna with his fists and bit her during the alleged incident, which took place around 12:30 a.m. on Sunday.

Brown, 19, was arrested on Sunday and charged with felony criminal threats. He was released on $50,000 bail.

Brown, known in addition to his singing for his athletic feats of dancing — he has performed upside-down — previously said he studied martial arts, according to the New York Daily News.

The Los Angeles Police Department is still investigating the alleged domestic violence felony battery and told Access that additional charges may be filed.

Authorities released information to Access Hollywood that Brown and a woman were arguing in a car in the Hancock Park area of Los Angeles just after midnight on Sunday. Brown reportedly stopped the car, he and the woman got out and the argument escalated. LAPD reports the woman suffered visible injuries.

Following the incident, Brown reportedly left, leaving Rihanna at the scene.

Radar Online reported that a source inside Cedars-Sinai Medical Center, where Rihanna was reportedly taken following the incident, said the singer became emotional when two female “assistants” went to visit her at the facility.

“Rihanna was clearly very upset by what had happened and I could hear her screaming,” the source said. “Rihanna was trying to get her point across about something, she sounded like she was crying as she tried to get… her point across.”

He's a coward, even though I doubt it, I hope they lock him up for several years. It appears to be the DA's intention as they went with the higher penalty charge as Domestic violence is only good for 4 years in CA.

This is upsetting, what in the world was even going on that the thought of violence was the best solution? Shameful

unfortunately there are ALOT of men (and women too) who are volatile and unstable enough (among other things) to think that putting their hands on their partner/spouse/lover is OKAY in times of disagreement and confrontation. its a REAL problem!

It is actually widespread, and it is still not dealt with very well by individuals OR authorities.

Los Angeles (E! Online) – Earlier today, the Los Angeles District Attorney asked police detectives to dig up more evidence for their case against Chris Brown.

The police are getting cooperation from Rihanna, and what she has told them so far is chilling.

A source close to the investigation tells E! News exclusively that Rihanna has alleged to police that Brown choked her while threatening to kill her and, subsequently, she lost consciousness.

They began squabbling after leaving Clive Davis' pre-Grammy party late Saturday. Shortly after midnight, things blew up. Brown pulled his silver Lambourghini to the side of a street in L.A.'s Hancock Park neighborhood. That's when, per the source, Rihanna grabbed the car keys and tossed them out the window, sending Brown into a rage.

He tried in vain to find the keys, then came back to the car, put his hands around her neck and, according to the insider, said, "I'm going to kill you!"

The 20-year-old "Disturbia" singer told police that she lost consciousness, the source says, and when she awoke, Brown had fled.

According to the source, her right eye was blackened and badly swollen and she had hand prints on her arms. The responding officers were so concerned about her, they drove Rihanna to the hospital in their squad car instead of waiting for an ambulance.

Officers took two sets of photographs of the banged-up singer, one at the scene and the second after she was admitted to Cedars-Sinai Medical Center for treatment. Those photos were presumably among the evidence presented to the D.A.

After being treated for her injuries, police escorted her down a rear elevator and into a waiting Mercedes, the source says.

Brown, 19, was subsequently booked on suspicion of making criminal threats. He was released after posting $50,000 bail.

His lawyer, Mark Geragos, has not responded to repeated requests for comment on the allegations. Brown's publicist also has not commented.

A spokeswoman for Rihanna declined to comment specifically on details of the fight and the arrest and stuck to her earlier statement from Sunday: "Rihanna is well. Thank you for concern and support."

I was appalled at this bit of news when I first heard it. First, I never thought Chris was like that and I also heard this whole altercation was provoked by Paris Hilton.

Nothing is that bad that Chris had to attack his girlfriend (which Chris is claiming they never dated). There's no excuse and I hope he loses all of his sponsors after this incident.

What is going to be his defense? Bi-polar, drugs, a bad childhood? I'm curious to see exactly what he'll say.

Christopher Brown and Robyn F. have been involved in a dating relationship for approximately one and a half years. On Sunday February 8.2009 at 00:25 hours, Brown was driving a vehicle with Robyn F. as the front passenger on an unknown street in Los Angeles. Robyn F. picked up Brown’s cellular telephone and observed a three page text message from a woman who Brown had a previous sexual relationship with. A verbal argument ensued and Brown pulled the vehicle over on an unknown street, reached over Robyn F. with his right hand, opened the car door and attempted to force her out. Brown was unable to force Robyn F. out of the vehicle because she was wearing a seat belt. When he could not force her to exit, he took his right hand and shoved her head against the passenger window of the vehicle causing an approximate one inch raised circular contusion. Robyn F. turned to face Brown and he punched her in the left eye with his right hand. He then drove away in the vehicle and continued to punch her in the face with his right hand while steering the vehicle with his left hand. The assault caused Robin F’s. mouth to fill with blood and blood to splatter all over her clothing and the interior of the vehicle.

Brown looked at Robyn F. and stated, “I’m going to beat the shit out of you when we get home! You wait and see!” Robyn F. picked up her cellular telephone and called her personal assistant Jennifer Rosales at (818) ***-****. Rosales did not answer the telephone but while her voicemail greeting was playing, Robyn F. pretended to talk to her and stated, “I’m on my way home. Make sure the cops are there when I get there.” (This statement was made while the greeting was playing and was not captured as a message). After Robyn F. faked the call, Brown looked at her and stated, “You just did the stupidest thing ever! Now I’m really going to kill you!” Brown resumed punching Robyn F. and she interlocked her fingers behind her head and brought her elbows forward to protect her face. She then bent over at the waist, placing her elbows and face near her lap in attempt to protect her face and head from the barrage of punches being levied upon her by Brown. Brown continued to punch Robyn F. on her left arm and hand causing her to suffer a contusion on her left triceps that was approximately two inches in diameter and numerous contusions on her left hand. Robyn F. then attempted to send a text message to her other personal assistant, Melissa Ford. Brown snatched the cellular telephone out of her hand and threw it out of the window onto an unknown street.

Brown continued driving and Robyn F. observed his cellular telephone sitting in his lap. She picked up the cellular telephone with her left hand and before she could make a call he placed her in a head lock with his right hand and continued to drive the vehicle with his left hand. Brown pulled Robyn F. close to him and bit her on her left ear. She was able to feel the vehicle swerving from right to left as Brown sped away. He stopped the vehicle in front of 333 North **** Street and Robyn F. turned off the car, removed the key from the ignition and sat on it. Brown did not know what she did with the key and began punching her in the face and arms. He then placed her in a head lock positioning the front of her throat between his bicep and forearm. Brown began applying pressure to Robyn F’s. left and right carotid arteries causing her to be unable to breathe and she began to lose consciousness. She reached up with her left hand and began attempting to gouge his eyes in an attempt to free herself. Brown bit her left ring and middle fingers and then released her. While Brown continued to punch her, she turned around and placed her back against the passenger door. She brought her knees to her chest, placed her feet against Brown’s body and began punching him away. Brown continued to punch her on the legs and feet causing several contusions. Robyn F. began screaming for help and Brown exited the vehicle and walked away. A resident in the neighborhood heard Robyn F’s. plea for help and called 911, causing a police response. An investigation was conducted and Robyn F. was issued a Domestic Violence Emergency Protective Order (EPO).

This was the police report as told by Rihanna the night of their fight. Obviously there are two sides to every story...but seriously....Chris Brown is fucked up. And Rihanna is even more so for getting back together with that pig.

Won't happen. She is not cooperating and may even accept some culpability in this. It appears that he will at most get probation or something on a plea.

I was watching TMZ (yeah, I know) but they said that he was probably going to do a plea bargain that might include jail time because he does NOT want the pictures of Rihanna to be released in open court (apparently they are worse than the ones we've seen already).

But yeah, BOTH of them are dumbasses.

you know, im noticing that TMZ is up on alot of stuff that's going on LOL! celebrities must think people are really stupid

as for Chris Brown? he's just dispicable and he's apparently going to get away with what he's done! If you read the extent of what he did to Rhianna...what kind of message is this whole situation sending out? That because they're celebrities the rules don't apply? Does Rhianna think that it won't happen again? if she does she's a FOOL. She needs to talk to Madonna, Tina Turner, Farrah Fawcett or any other celebrity woman who has endured ABUSE at the hands of a high profile man. These women have experience and wisdom and could TELL HER something before its TOO LATE for her...or maybe she's just going to have to hit rock bottom and endure a world of pain, physical injury and emotional trauma before she gets a clue and saves herself.

at anyrate...my sympathy for HER just EVAPORATED and my anger toward Chris Brown has MAGNIFIED.

Ditto. You know, Tina's got to be sitting there, watching the news, going, "I need to call that bitch and straighten her ass OUT. NEXT!" :p
