Hellfire — the Catacombs
Zach renewed his efforts on Helena with extreme prejudice. He told her that he’d killed his father like this, by way of heart attack, so that she’d recognize the signs and know she was dying. She struggled, buckled under his onslaught, and managed to reply that he was as weak as his father.
“So says the Queen kneeling to ME.”
He replied, his voice low and gravelly. His heart was racing and sweat rolled down his skin, but he pushed through the pain, his tunneled gaze locked on Helena, his focus sharp. Ashley reached in to help hasten the results, and Alexis recovered enough to lend a hand as well. Helena burst into a swarm of bees, and slipped out of Zach’s hold like sand through a fist.
He grunted in frustration as she disappeared, and sank hard into a chair to catch his breath. His chest heaved as he unzipped the jacket of his battle suit partway to let some ventilation in. He tried not to think about how nauseous and exhausted he felt, as he waited for the dizziness to pass. When it did, he pounded on the table with a balled fist.
“I almost had her!”
He scowled. There was chatter on the comms, had been for a while. He couldn’t have been paying attention before, but now he did. Oracle told them all the Queens were now together in the White Wing. The rest of the transmissions had to do with arranging care and evacuate for Titan. Zach’s brow creased with concern as he listened until it was clear Andrew had gotten out. Then he looked at Ash.
“He’ll be okay. They’ll take care of him.”
He said, more to convince himself than anything. His gaze shifted to Alexis, who seemed to be looking at something in the room. An illusion, maybe? Zach pushed himself up from the chair and moved quickly to Ash’s side, putting himself between her and Alexis protectively. When Alexis broke out of her trance, though, she didn’t attack. Zach breathed an audible sigh of relief.
“We should all stick together. We have two options, chase Helena and face all three Queens with the Six team, or regroup with our own and bring down the rest of the mansion.”
He said to both of them, then looked at Ash.
“What do you think, babe?”
