There are some of you far too young to ever remember watching the Carol Burnett show during its original run. But this show laid the ground work for future comedy sketch shows such as Saturday Night Live and Mad TV...and UNLIKE its followers, the Carol Burnett show relied on TALENT and pure comedy rather than gross out gags, constant overt sexual inuendo and other standards of today's comedy sketch shows.

Recently one of the original cast members, Harvey Korman, passed away. He was in his 80's. Carol Burnett, Vicki (Mama's Family) Lawrence, Tim Conway, Lyle Waggoner and Dick Van Dyke (Harvey's successor on the show) are all alive and well.

The show for 11 years- 1967 thru 1978 and like comedy sketch shows of today...it had its own trademark characters/sketches as well as parodies of current issues in the news and pop culture and show stopping musical numbers and many many guest stars. everyone from Flip Wilson, Della Reese, Sammi Davis Jr. and Cher to Lynda Carter, Farrah Fawcett and Bernadette Peters.

This show also gave birth to the popular spin off TV series of the 80's- MAMA'S FAMILY which featured Vicki Lawrence reprising the role of brash, acid tongued "Mama" as well as Carol Burnett frequently guest starring/reprising her role as "Eunice"...both Mama and Eunice were apart "Mama's Family" parent sketch "The Family".

here are some wonderfull , FUNNY clips:

the CLASSIC sketch, "Went with the wind"...a parody of "Gone with the Wind

Yes that's her. Carol Burnett really broke down barriers for women in comedy and the Carol Burnett show is comedic gold. Not like this crap on Saturday Night Live today (which itself used to be very relevant years ago too) .

Hey Jill, any idea where i can get some clips off that show.It sounds great:xyxthumbs:
Ignore that,i've just re-read your post's.I'll check them out,thanks

Let me know what you think? I think her show endures the test of time! my favorite skit being "snow white 15 years later" LOL!

you dont really see comedy sketch/variety shows on the air like that now...except SNL which is nothing like it used to be. Its bad when even the stuff they did in the 90's seems "classic" by today's standards.

Jill.....Jill......Jill!
That was great.I have not laughed like that for a long time:hehe2:
King"How do i look?"
The Mirror"Terrible, but thats no reflection on you"boom boom!
It harks back to a Golden age,one sadly missing from todays television.
Like Mork and Mindy another programe we've not seen the likes of since.
I shall try to order a DVD of Carol Burnett's shows.
Will let you know how i get on

Yeah,hahahaha.
It was enormous.I especially liked the Fairy Godmother, that voice nearly made me wet myself, lol.
I had my ear phones in,and when Carol Burnett spoke the first time,my ears nearly bled!

the fairy godmother is actually Ruth Buzzi, an original cast member of another classic sketch comedy show, "Rowan & Martin's Laugh In" that show was a little before my time, but I have since seen it and rented dvds to watch it.

I recognised the king too,and the mirror, but cant place them.
The StarTrek parody i've seen before, but forgot about it.
She was actually quiet pretty, and reminds me of Victoria Wood(i dont know why),perhaps its her manor.

The King - Harvey Korman, an original cast member of the Carol Burnett show and reocurring on the spin off "Mama's Family" before it went into syndication. He passed away just recently.

The mirror- Lyle Waggoner, another cast member of the show but also the co-star of "Wonder Woman" with Lynda Carter.

the star trek parody was rather funny LOL! and "As the stomach turns", the weird soap opera....that one was especially funny when Bernadette Peters starred as a bratty, demon possessed child LOL! or the one where Vicki Lawrence was "The Bionic Woman" and smashed through the walls of Carol's house! :haha:

Ah Lyle Waggoner,he was a hunk of a man.I liked The Golden Boy,on The Carol Burnett Show on You Tube, lol
Check out www.imdb.com/Lylewaggoner/nm0905741/bio

Glade you joined the debate Silver Swan,it was just me and Jill until then.
I think he's,from a male point of view, admirable and suave.
But this thread is about Carol Burnett not him so i wont jump tracks(even though i could talk about him all night),lol
I'm going to research her work now,i like her humour.
By the way,i got it wrong,it was Harvey Korman who died, whoops!

Well he was apart of the SHOW, so its okay to talk about him as well. I didnt think he was all that much to look at myself and he wasnt that funny either, STILL he had his place in the cast and i think his "hunk" appeal ....a "hunk with humour" is what made him work with the cast.

as for Carol, I really do appreciate her. I'm glad she's still with us and I hope that more people will take time to discover the gift of laughter that she gave us and appreciate it. You dont see stuff like this these days anymore.

Did you know Lucille Ball was Carol's mentor?

No i didn't know that.
Is it true she was a lesbian?Carol Burnett i mean.
I keep laughing at that bit in Annie, when the orphans say when asked where Annie was,"She had to go bathroom".
Then Carol Burnett as Miss Hannigan, goes"Sheee hadda go bathrooom"in that over exzaggerated voice of hers, lol
Pure comic genius.
Her timing is perfect, and i admire her on so many levels.
