More and more reports of victims dying from the trauma of bullying are being shared via media. It's not something that just started...its been going on for generations.

The problem is that many people in many of these generations have seen bullying as a "rite of passage" in childhood. Parents of the victims dont do enough to help/protect, teachers and administrators do NOTHING and these victims are left traumatized deeply for years to come while the bully's get away with it. It's getting worse now because the bullying is carrying over into cyberspace. even going home from school is no escape for some victims.

How far must it go before things change and something is done?

Personally- if I were a parent, I wouldnt even LET it get to the point where my child felt like they needed to kill him/herself. SOMEBODY would be getting dealt with...the bully AND the parent and if need be the school/teachers who didnt feel it necessary to step in to help my child when I wasnt there.

I read an article today about these young girls who killed themselves after being hullied, harrassed and hounded and the BULLIES showed up at the funeral to MOCK one of the victims!

if that had been MY child? Those little brats would have gotten a nice HARD SLAP across the face and if the parents wanted to say something, they could get it to and I'm not being idle in that statement.

Recently 5 gay boys killed themselves because they were being bullied about their sexual orientation. There's this huge campaign going on on youtube where people and celebrities are sending out messages and telling them "it gets better". I believe it's linked with the Trevor Project.

But bullying is definitely something that schools and parents aren't taking as seriously as they should. Teenagers now adays have more resources on their hands to take matters into their OWN hands. If it's not suicide it's shooting up their school.

I think this whole "kids will be kids" thing is bullshit. I can understand that logic if the kid is 7/8/9 because they ARE kids. But when it reaches adolescents, to an age where hormones are going crazy, emotions are out of whack, and literally EVERYTHING is the end of the world, that's when parents and teachers need to step in.

It's horrible when kids think that suicide is the only answer. But I think a lot of them aren't developed enough to realize that once they resort to it, there's no changing it. There's no do overs or going back. It's final. And they may be stopping their pain, but they're creating a lot of pain for all their loved ones.

ive seen the "it gets better" campaign. some of those are so moving. i've also seen some of the horrific responses by these heartless, incompassionate bigots. wtf is wrong with people?

I've never thought the "kids will be kids" thing was a responsible attitude. and in this day and age? the 7,8,9 year olds are a far cry from the 7,8,9, year olds of my generation. these kids today seem to lack social skills and the ability to censor themselves and there's plenty of evidence to proove that it has to do with all the social network/texting/technology they're immersed in. i think there's at least two generations now that dont have ANY idea what the world was like before "texting" etc. and alot of these kids don't communicate verbally very well or understand the idea of boundaries and respect either because of that.

at the same time, you DEFINATELY have to blame the parents. some of these kids do TERRIBLE things to other children...its not just name calling, pushing and throwing dirt at each other...i'm talking about kids literally stuffing other kids into lockers, forcing heads down into the toilet, making death threats, spitting, physically assaulting etc. when these kids do this shit...the PARENTS need to be held accountable as well. they picked that behavior up from SOMEWHERE.

and yeah, with social networking and such, even going HOME from school isnt safe for some victims now. these kids hound their victims on AND offline. where does it stop?

it breaks my heart to read these stories about these kids and young men/women who are DYING from the trauma of their bullying. These victims dont have the strength to fight back and put those bullies in check nor do they have the support of their parents/teachers etc so its a big collective fail. how many MORE deaths and school shootings etc will we see before law makers take this seriously?

I personally believe that for pre-teens and up...if you bully a child, harrass, assault them to the point the victim is injured or kills themself...that bully needs to be charged and CANED, as do the parents!

like i said, let that had been ME at the funeral and it was MY child in the casket? when those little bitches showed up to MOCK my dead child that they put in that coffin with their vicious bullying? they wouldve gotten told and SLAPPED across their smug little faces and the parent could get it too. but then again if it were ME, I would have gone into momma bear mode the moment i found out my child was being bullied and SOMEBODY at the school would be doing something to stop those bullies, the parents would be hearing from me and If I had to take off work to shadow my child at school until those bullies were dealt with, I would.

it starts at home...both for the bullies AND the victims.

Bullying is awful in my opinion. Especially because kids are committing suicide because they're getting upset and hurt by it.

Recently, a girl in Massachussettes killed herself because she was being bullied at school and kids were texting her rude stuff. And this was a big thing in court because the attorney and the jury was deciding whether or not the bullies should be charged with murder, BTW they ended up being charged with murder at the end of the trial.

But I do think that schools and parents should do more to prevent stuff like this from happening and try to help the victims of bullying more as well.

^^That's actually really interesting. I'm glad that certain courts in this country are taking these matters seriously. It baffles my mind that these bullies aren't being charged with AT LEAST 2nd degree murder for contributing in the death of their fellow classmate. It's like saying that Joe shot Sally; he has the gun in his hand but no one saw him pull the trigger, therefore Joe didn't kill Sally. It's fucked up really.

thats the position law enforcement took 25+ years ago with domestic violence too, as insane as that sounds. if a woman was being assaulted by her husband and she or someone witnessing/overhearing it called the police, more often than not the police would not do anything because they "didnt see it happening" with their own eyes and this would hold up in court! it wasnt until "battered women's syndrome" became on officially recognized trauma and some other events that police, the courts and law makers changed their attitudes and laws toward domestic violence.

i really think bullying should be handled similar to domestic violence. i think ther should be legal consequences (and yes i really do believe caning bullies is in order) for the bullies AND the parents who are found to be enablers of these bullie's nasty behavior.

Just thought I would shed a little positive light on this subject by promoting something LGBTQ Community is doing in order to promote awareness and possibility to gay youth, who is five times MORE likely to commit suicide than straight youth.

Spirit Day 2010

It’s been decided. On October 20th, 2010, we will wear purple in honor of the 8 homosexual teenagers who committed suicide in recent weeks/months due to homophobic abuse in their homes at at their schools. Purple represents Spirit on the LGBTQ flag and that’s exactly what we’d like all of you to have with you: spirit. Please know that times will get better and that you will meet people who will love you and respect you for who you are, no matter your sexuality. Please wear purple on October 20th. Tell your friends, family, co-workers, neighbors and schools. RIP Tyler Clementi, Asher Brown, Seth Walsh, Justin Aaberg,Eric Mohat, Meredith Rezak, Raymond Chase and Billy Lucas. You are loved.

maybe its just me but i always felt as though it was really a responsibility on the part of both the parent and the teaching environment to cut the bullying problem out. And more then that the kids need to know its both not ok and if necessary they should do what they have to to keep safe if it gets physical. Hell my parents told me that if anything happened to me in school even if i needed to take a pen and stab someone in the eye to keep myself safe it was ok and not to take any verbal abuse from anyone under any circumstances and they would back me up without question. These parents and teachers need to get up and stop letting this BS happen. No child anywhere should feel like killing him/herself is the best escape and more over we need to question just what the fuck is happening as a society that we are producing environments and circumstances where this kind of thing happens. Normally i just roll my eyes at the everyone is failing at parenting moral cry but this is ridiculous and unacceptable as a society. What the FUCK?

My sisters high school is doing Spirit Day on October 20th. I actually already knew about it because of posts on facebook, but I was pleasantly surprised that she told me her school was doing it as well. I will definitely be wearing purple on the 20th. :)
