I'll tell you in another lifetime when we are both
So the most famous and successful English Star has moved to America to retire from competitive football and play soccer.

I cannot believe that a club would pay someone who is past their prime (34) £128million, that is insane!!!!

Your thoughts on this? Do you even know who Beckham is? Has he actually made an impact?

I'll try to let my personal feelings aside, so on one hand it makes sense because Becks is the one footballer most Americans recognize, and the MLS needs something to spark interest here in soccer. On the other hand, this is what brought down professional soccer here the last time they tried it with Pele et al.

Personally, if Becks was playing out in the street, I wouldn't go outside to watch him lol

:)

Oh just that I can't stand Beckham - he has talent of course, but he was a shite captain that spent more time doing his nails than leading his team.

Lol, Beckham is more of a pop culture fixture than anything else over here. Soccer isnt a very big sport [not in the way say, american football or baseball or basketball is]

The fact that he was once married to Sexy Spice and that he's hotter than HELL escalates his status. Other than that... I've never really seen him play  but then I haven't been interested in soccer since i was in the fourth grade and we played it during recess at school :p

He's a good player, considering he has made his career on the wing and he is a better central midfielder - all of which will probably only make sense to Vilandra...lol.

I think it sad that he is known more for his looks than anything else. Though Beckham has never resisted fame and celebrity (why should he) he has always been a top professional and kept himself as the most match-fit person on any team. Personally this is the first time he has ever relied on his celebrity to aid him in his sport and he didn't need to. There would have been top clubs around Europe willing to by him, but this way he can finally indulge his celebrity whilst playing the sport he loves for a tidy little fee, good luck to him.

I have to say that I think he is the most successful and famous sports celebrity in the World, given that his entire name is a popular brand and he isn't even a great at the sport he actually plays. He may not have earned as much money as some sport stars in America, but who in the rest of the World does? Though Worldwide, even if you don't watch football/soccer it is more likely to know brand Beckham than anything else.

AND I gotta give credit to that well oiled money making brand to his wife! She has made a family and her family name a brand that sells worldwide without the need to add any controversy what-so-ever. Due to Victoria the Beckham family is a tight family unit (even though he cheated) built on good modern day values. She made Beckham a star and without her he would never have been as famous nor as rich without her. She may very well have changed the fame in football/soccer forever by giving us a glimpse at the next generation of football/soccer stars, players capable of managing celebrity with sport fame (George Best tried it previously and that ended tragically). If Victoria ever divorced Beckham and didn't get the majority of their accumilated estate, then that would be an injustice.

One thing is for cetain though, in America with all the modelling deals, sponsorship and PR parties, that women is going to make a hell of a lot of money out of brand Beckham.

Last night on ESPN (one of about four times soccer ever appears on it lol) it looked like they were trying to compare him to Michael Jordan (the sound was down cause I was at the pub lol), which I don't really agree with, Jordan was a once in a lifetime. But anyway, my friend said to me that he wants to try and bridge the gap here between kids playing soccer and like the teenages playing soccer. Because here, EVERYONE (it seems) plays soccer when they're like 5 years old. But they all go on to other sports if they keep playing and very few relatively speaking are still playing when they're a teen/college years. So if he wants to start something to try and keep kids interested, I'm all for it. I mean, the US has 4 football academies. That's all.

I was a little disappointed in the MLS draft yesterday, at least the ones I saw. All from the same schools and none from outside the US.

Ok, MLS drafts? The way the sport is structured over there is certainly fair for each team or is designed to be at least. What it does is remove the competitive nature of it.

If clubs were allowed to create their own academies and develop youngsters for the future as well as buy expensive players (basically the premiership) I think the league would be more competitive.

What you describe therem everyone playing soccer when young and then leaving as they get older) happens here as well. Its that as we get older we realise we aren't going to make it and focus on something else.

Well, I mean - it's more like everyone switches to other sports. Like I played soccer for five years as a kid, but when I was in high school I played hockey and basketball and lacrosse. Most guys would play football or basketball in school rather than soccer.

It's a sport sort of like hurling, with a stick with a sort of basket on the end of it that you carry the ball in. It was developed by the American Indians.
