After three decades of keeping mum, Barbara Walters is disclosing a past affair with married U.S. Senator Edward Brooke, whom she remembers as "exciting" and "brilliant."

Appearing on "The Oprah Winfrey Show" scheduled to air Tuesday, Walters shares details of her relationship with Brooke that lasted several years in the 1970s, according to a transcript of the show provided to The Associated Press.

A moderate Republican from Massachusetts who took office in 1967, Brooke was the first African-American to be popularly elected to the Senate. Both he and Walters knew that public knowledge of their affair could have ruined his career as well as hers, Walters says.

At the time, the twice-divorced Walters was a rising star in TV news and co-host of NBC's "Today" show, but would soon jump to ABC News, where she has enjoyed unrivaled success. Her affair with Brooke, which never before came to light, had ended before he lost his bid for a third term in 1978.

Brooke later divorced, and has since remarried. Calls to a listing for Brooke in Miami by The Associated Press were not immediately returned Thursday.

Walters is the guest of Oprah Winfrey to discuss her new memoir, "Audition," which covers her long career in television, as well as her off-camera life. On "Oprah," Walters recounts a phone call from a friend who urged her to stop seeing Brooke.

"He said, 'This is going to come out. This is going to ruin your career,'" then reminded her that Brooke was up for re-election a year later. "'This is going to ruin him. You've got to break this off.'"

Winfrey asks Walters if she was in love.

"I was certainly — I don't know — I was certainly infatuated."

"Infatuated."

"I was certainly involved," Walters says. "He was exciting. He was brilliant. It was exciting times in Washington."

Also during the program, Walters chokes up while describing the struggles of her older sister Jackie, who was mentally retarded. Walters confesses that, as a child, she sometimes felt embarrassed by Jackie.

"She stuttered terribly. People made fun of her. People made fun of me," Walters says. "I didn't bring friends home. I felt terribly guilty because she was very loving and I didn't always feel that way."

Jackie Walters died in 1985 of ovarian cancer.

"When I think of her, because she was beautiful and loving and all of that, it makes me cry."

Dayum, my girl Barbara had an affair with an African American? Out of everyone I'd never think of her as being a huntress lol. :hehe2:

It makes sense though for keeping it a secret though. But, I'm curious why she brings it up now after all these years only for her memoir.

WHAT A SLUT!!!

I've lost all belief in her having any integrity now!

oh please. now you sound like one of those buffoons on newsarama

she's no more a slut than Bill Clinton or Jim Baker (you're probably too young to know who he is :p )

i think it shows a whole new side to Ms. Walters...I never wouldve guessed that she had an affair, much less an interracial one.

It does, it shows she's human and has a love life. That's cool.

and next time you see her, would you tell her I said hi? but do it before she throws a drink in your face ;)

Sure, but I like it if she does, I keep my mouth open and get feed an olive and some booze! I'll say hi, but she seems to like to pick fights there. Also she seems to like someone called Cat-Scratch there.................I wonder who that could be and should I sue?

it was over 30 years ago  im sure both she and the senator looked alot different back then :p

and im SURE your ol' perverted self will find plenty of OTHER women to "picture"

LOL, Its just odd to think about i never would (or wanted to) picture Barbra Walters as the type to do something like have an affair. I guess when jungle fever strikes you just got to get the cure :D

I’m not saying what Barbara did was right but we ALL make bad decisions in life. The fact that she had the courage to come forward shows a lot about her sense of character. At least she didn’t get caught with her pants down like some of the other news anchors on prime television. She was and still is a classy woman who managed to succeed in getting interviews no one else could dream of getting.

I get so sick of men calling women a slut when they’re just as guilty! Most men cheat on their wives and that seems okay. You really don’t hear much about the male public discussing it. But as soon as a woman cheats she’s called a slut, why? If men can screw around so can women. For all we knew the Senator’s wife could have been unfaithful to him, who knows.

Barbara has hide this secret for YEARS to secure her career. Nobody ever uncovered it, nothing was leaked, she was honest about her affair. She didn’t do it to seek attention (Monica), she did it to tell a story, her biography.

I don’t know about you guys but that shows a strong woman whose willing to accept critism for her mistakes. How many men do you know do that? None that I can think of. They only apologize after getting caught. You never hear one write a novel or get on television and admit they had an affair. Until a man actually has the balls to sit there and say they had one then they need to sit their ass down and shut the hell up lol.

Oddly enough, Newt Gingrich confessed a few years back without getting caught. Granted, he was thinking about running for president at the time, but that's not very different from Barbara, who only came clean to hype her book.
