Barack obama is the new president!

i wont deny that one of the KEY reasons i was (and still am ) a huge supporter of Hillary Clinton is because she's a woman. I'm a woman, so does that make me sexist? I wanted to see Hillary become the first woman president and I was HURT when it became clear she would lose the nomination BUT Barack Obama was an excellent choice for me as well because I believe he will help HEAL this country, restore our standing in the international community and help the middle class and poor people get a fair chance at living decently in this country again. but i would be LYING if i didnt tell you I wonder..."will a woman EVER get that chance too?"

im gonna tell you that as a white person , it sickened me to see how many OTHER white people i knew (or heard) saying "im not voting for barack because he doesnt have experience" when we all knew that the real reason was "because he was black". Sarah Palin had LESS than "no experience" she was a governor, had never served on the senate or had ANY kind of national politcal presence and yet she was so much more qualified than Barack? (or Hillary!?) COME ON now.

but at the same time, I saw alot of black people where i am acting as though Barack winning this election was going to mean an AUTOMATIC ABOUT FACE on a centuries old sickness in this country called Racism. His election is HISTORIC but that doesnt mean "racism" is over. I've heard white people say "well now black people can't complain...they have a black president"...and im like "THEY!?" who is THEY? he's YOUR president too. and HIS being president isnt going to change the day to day lives of black people who face institutionalized racism on a daily basis from their job, from the police or where ever else.

there's even a website online now with a count down clock to the "assassination of obama"...its shit like that that lets you know that we have a problem in this country.

I can't help it that you're pissed by my observation. I'm not trying to upset you, but that was my experience. No, I didn't know the guy I was talking to in line well, but he did tell me he didn't care about Obama's policies, he just thought it was time we had a black President. There were African Americans teens in the gym where I work out chanting, "Our President is black, our President is black." Now let's face it, white people could never, ever do that without being called racists. And I agree with you and Spell that there most certainly werer white people who voted against Obama for his skin color. Please don't hear me excusing that behavior, they are wrong for that. My only point really is that it is racist to choose one candidate over another based solely on skin color.
And like I said, I really am happy for African Americans. There is no way I can know how important this is for minorities. I've been voting for Alan Keyes for as along as I've been able to vote and I wish more Republicans would pay attention to him. I didn't vote Republican this election, but I sure as heck would have voted for Rice.

Be glad I didn't find this thread till today. I would have argued with you about this like crazy. :hehe2:

I know I am late in the game for this but I have been gone. I have never EVER been this emotionally moved or charged in an election in my entire life. This was the first time that I ever stood up and wanted to make a difference.

I found out it happened, I got off of work and I watched his acceptance speech and I really cried like a baby. It was one of the most prolific moments in my life. He was so well spoken, so confident, so much like Presidents of the past, someone to give MEANING to the word president not take away meaning from that word.

I saw the faces in the crowds, and they looked like me and the people I love in this world... Gay couples holding each other close, african americans cheering and crying, people of all ages and races and backgrounds, united, hushed by the words of the man who is going to run this country and it was so moving for me. I know i've experienced moments that will go down in history books but for me, this was THE moment, the changing moment, when I realized that... it's possible. Whatever you want to do, whatever you want to be... it's possible.

Yes We Can ;)
