YES WE CAN!!!

We all made history tonight and i just want to ask honestly from everyone here please take a moment in between celebration to remember where you are and the feelings that help bring you to this moment. We didn't just watch history be made we helped make it and for good or ill this is now four years all our own.

Last night at 11:05, I picked up my son and spun him around and around. My wife and I told him the story of how he got his name, that we agonized over it for weeks because we wanted a name that would be fit for for a Judge or a Senator.

"Now", I told him, "If you want, you really CAN be EVEN the president of the United States. It can REALLY happen. Barack Obama is a very special person because out of 44 Presidents, he will be the VERY first one that will look like YOU. And a lot of people worked very hard for a long time to make sure that was possible."

My son did not take it all in in the same way I did or my wife did, but the scene was NOT totally lost on him either.

The very best 2 things about 4 November 2008: Working the polls with my son, and hearing him say after my wife and me went nuts when Obama won and called him into the room to tell him.

He said, "Mommy...Daddy...Of COURSE Obama is the president. I voted for him in school."

awww!!! ^_^ how sweet!

this is very heart warming.

I'm so freaking happy too! I think Obama brought the world together. As I was watching the coverage last night on ABC you could see African Americans and white people HUGGING! Not just a few but many people! I don't think McCain would have been able to do that.

Obama had something to say and so did our country. This race was clearly not about race. I think it dealt more with the decline of the economy and Bush more than anything.

As I got to work people from the other floors were celebrating! I couldn't help but smirk. Almost everyone at the firm are very HAPPY and in a good mood. You can always tell the people who voted for McCain from the sour expression on their faces lol.

And Garrick that's really sweet. What is your son's name?

WOOHOO!!

I was crying last night it was such an emotional moment. I can actually look forward and think there's HOPE to getting out of this ridiculous financial crisis Bush put this entire country in, among other things. It's not only a historic moment for this country and for blacks, but hopefully it's a stepping stone to what this country can finally become.

And aww Garrick! That's wonderful about your son! I was watching the news last night and a little black girl was on there talking about how they couldn't drink out of the same water fountains as whites only a few decades ago, and the reporter asked her, 'now what do you see on tv?' and she started to cry and said 'change'. It made me teary eyed. :(

that was very touching...it left me feeling very moved and hopefull. and the one thing I have been thinking of MOST was mentioned in this vid..."HEAL THIS NATION"

I voted for Bob Barr, so I knew going in that my candidate wasn't going to win. I disagree with Obama on pretty much every issue and I'm doubtful that he'll be able to make good on all of his promises. He is very charismatic though.
One news channel did a montage of concession speeches of the last five elctions and in every one the loser called for unity and support for the President-elect. That sounds good in theory, but we're clearly a nation still divided (and likely always will be with a 2 party system). I'm also not sure why I would now support someone I haven't supported up to this point. I mean, there is no way most Democrats could say they supported Bush. I'm not going to leave the country and I'm thinking our nation is as its end, but of course I'll do whatever I can to ensure that Obama's policies that I disagree with don't become law. I guess I'm wondering what it means to support a President.

i dont know if i can agree with all of this. I am old enough to remember REAGAN'S time in the whitehouse and although he was a republican, alot of people (my parents included) who were democrats or "liberals" were able to support him. most people that i know have said that Reagan was the last repubican president that truly enjoyed united support. Clinton was democratic and while he may not have had much support from the conservatives/republicans he still took care of business.

Bush was the WORST president EVER. More than once source indicates it and he not only erroded america, but he violated the "checks and balances" system of our government as he saught to make the executive brance the ONLY branch of the government that had any power. How could anyone support a president who was a liar, inept and generally only out to further himself and his cronies?

Barack hasnt even been sworn in yet...of course he faces a daunting task...cleaning up the MESS that BUSH AND THE REPUBLICANS LEFT BEHIND. He needs to be given a fair chance. Enough people believe in him to have voted him in office, so all we can do is now wait. Nothing's going to happen overnight. it took 8 years for us to be in the toilet, so now we need time and help to get out.

I'm npt trying to be argumentative, it's way too soon to know how bad (or good) of a President Bush was. Get some perspective and let history decide. Also, people seem to forget that our economy was booming for most of the Bush years. Only in the last two years (when Democrats took control of Congress) did things go south.
As far as Obama goes, my guess is that our economy will look the Jimmy Carter era 2.0. I honestly hope I'm wrong. I hope Obama excells as Commander In Chief and proves people like me wrong. He still has certain stances I can never support, but I would not mind being proven wrong about his economic plan.

So, I take it Archon that you were one of the people who probably booed while Senator McCain asked for people to support Senator Obama? While, you may not like him, I think he has a LOT to offer. I also think that judging by the news coverage on television and the way African Americans and white people were hugging there may be a decline in racism. That's just MY opinion but I have to agree with Farrah on everything she said.

Plus, yesterday Mr. Obama was already picking members of his cabinet. He realizes he has a LOT to do but he's also choosing members from the Clinton Administration. Men who do not take any shit and who can toughen Obama up. I think that's a positive step because I honesty liked Bill Clinton. I didn't think highly of his affair but what man in politics isn't fooling around? lol.

Obama even mentioned proposing a Stimulus for the middle-class. He's aware that 1 million American's are jobless living off of Unemployment Insurance. Something that has increased since five years ago. If Bush was so great why are so many Americans laid off? Why are we in a recession? I'm willing to guess its that damn war we're fighting. A war that we're not even going to win. We're spending billions of dollars on a war when we should be focusing in on our economy and worrying about our own people. But that's just my opinion.

And Garrick that's a sweet name. :xyxthumbs:

I'm npt trying to be argumentative,

sure you are ;) it's what you do best :p

ALREADY he has been noted by more than one source (polls, authors, history professors, economists etc) as the worst president in history. polls of the PEOPLE rutinely say this...even his own party has shunned him. I dont think I need to "get perspective" when it's clear as day.

the economy was doing well when he got in office in 2000 because he INHERITED the economic prosperity of the clinton years. Under Bush, the housing and financial industries ran wild (in the wrong direction) thanks to MASSIVE deregulating of the industries and that (among other things) is what got us where we are...not to mention more division in the country, the use of "legislation" to promote bigotry and discrimination aka "The defense of marraige act" , the errosion of civil liberties etc. Bush also made it his business to routinely circumvent or disregard the "checks and balances" system in our government.

i dont think anything could be as bad as what Bush has done. we are in the worst shape financially right now SINCE the depression era and that is what top economists have been saying repeatedly. that trumps whatever hardships were seen during the Carter era.

As a matter of fact I did not boo during McCain's concession speech, but it did cause me to shake my head when he suggested we should support a President with whom we disagree. It seems to me that Democrats are being disingenious to call for unity when for the last 8 years they've done nothing but blast Bush.
I do hope there is a decrease in racism, but sadly, that's not what I've seen. I saw a lot of people voting for Obama simply because he was black. Choosing one candidate over another based solely on skin color is racist. I'm not saying Republicans weren't doing the same thing (in fact, I'd be willing to bet some were), but I had conversations with some Obama supporters who told me that's precisely what they were doing. I'm not a minority so I can't understand how important this is to African Americans, but I am happy for them, even if I really don't like Obama. In fact, I've been voting for Alan Keyes since I was old enough to vote. I'd love to see him get more media coverage. Maybe next time, we'll see.
As far as the stimulus package, that's always been interesting to me. Traditionally Democrats have been the party to raise taxes, but when the economy needs a boost what do they do? Put money back in the hands of the people. Hey, I'm all for money, I just find it interesting. Obama will have to either raise taxes or scale back his proposed entitlement programs, he can't deliver on both. Like I said earlier, I hope I'm wrong but I don't think I am.

and yet i wonder were you one of those who would have said to me [or anyone else who never agreed with bush] that "we need to support our president" no matter how CLEAR the evidence was that he was doing a TERRIBLE job? Barack hasnt even gotten into office yet and people are predicting the destruction of the WORLD behind him lol!

and what about the Republicans or white people (democrats or otherwise) who were NOT voting for Barack Obama for no other reason than because he was black? there were people that I heard say they LIKED his ideas but they "couldnt vote for a black person"...what is THAT? and how is a minority group rallying behind the first black [bi-racial] candidate with a real shot at the white house racist?

White people have been voting (or not voting) based on skin color for decades....they kept BLACK people from being ABLE to vote because of skin color. now all of a sudden because black people finally have a candidate that they feel they can support they are racist? (even though these same black people probably voted for Clinton or any other of the 43 white presidents we've had)

what did the republicans do with this god awfull "700 billion dollar bail out plan"? they put it back into the hands of the greedy, stupid, dishonest people on wallstreet who got themselves INTO this mess in the first place...again thanks to massive deregulation and rampant greed and corruption. NONE of that is gonna have any real help or impact on the MIDDLE CLASS or average , hard working citizens who have been suffering for the last 8 years.

OK, NOW I'm pissed. Because I have had it with whites who say it is racism to support Obama because he is Black. That is BULLSHIT. Black people have been voting FOR whites for years. We have NOTHING to prove to YOU or anyone else. Conservative whites, on the other hand, either need to convince me that there has never been anyone of color worthy to run for any major office or get off the high horse. Did you know that Obama was only the 5th EVER Black Senator?

On top of that, if you knew that Black person better, you would probably discuss it enough with them to know that they REALLY meant Black and QUALIFIED. I am Black, so I will bet the mortgage I have a MUCH larger sample set than you, and Hillary would be President if Obama had not convinced many people (including many blacks ) to vote for him. Many Blacks were supporting Hillary, and would not vote for Barack until they heard him, saw his message, and believed that he would be a good President, not just a Black one.

I believe that many people think that Black people just voted for Obama because he was Black because they have been doing the EXACT SAME THING FOR YEARS, voting on color. Newsflash!!! Black people have been rising above what many whites have done to them for 4 centuries. Don't mire us with the hangups that we do not have just because some of you do.

And as far as raising taxes and Demorcrats go, we prefer that those who have been blessed by our system and its riches pay a bit more when times are tight. We realize that there is a certain amount you need to live off of, and that Oprah and Warren Buffet and John McCain already have ends met. They will not be harmed by a return to an old tax code that represents only 4% of salary over $250,000 and was in place in a decade where they managed to do quite well.

As for his "entitlement" programs, Barack will have all the money he needs when we stop spending hundreds of million of dollars in Iraq. In fact, the nearly $1 Trillion we have spent would have kept use nicely out of the shitter if we had invested it wisely and you Republicans could have had your kickbacks to the wealthy and your White House. But Bush fucked up...did not take the advice of many wise peple, and now the Republicans can shake their heads all they like...there is a new sheriff in town and his name is Barack Obama. So TREMBLE. And you'd better hope that he does well because after this last one, we don't have far to fall.

I can't help it that you're pissed by my observation. I'm not trying to upset you, but that was my experience. No, I didn't know the guy I was talking to in line well, but he did tell me he didn't care about Obama's policies, he just thought it was time we had a black President. There were African Americans teens in the gym where I work out chanting, "Our President is black, our President is black." Now let's face it, white people could never, ever do that without being called racists. And I agree with you and Spell that there most certainly werer white people who voted against Obama for his skin color. Please don't hear me excusing that behavior, they are wrong for that. My only point really is that it is racist to choose one candidate over another based solely on skin color.
And like I said, I really am happy for African Americans. There is no way I can know how important this is for minorities. I've been voting for Alan Keyes for as along as I've been able to vote and I wish more Republicans would pay attention to him. I didn't vote Republican this election, but I sure as heck would have voted for Rice.
