Are remakes worth it?

No. They aren't worth it. At all.

I'm against remakes. Sure, there are few remakes that are actually good but to me, I think they're a cop-out. Whatever happened to original ideas?

Apparently The Girl With The Dragon Tattoo is supposed to be better than the original movie (based on the first book of the Millenium Trilogy by Stieg Larsson)

Since i haven't seen the original film either i have plans of first seeing the remake (and then the original movie)

Original movie

But yeah mostly the remakes aren't that good.

you need wait to make a remake give it a good 20 or 30 years instead of 7 like spider-man

Thought the new Spider Man and the Superman reboot both sucked so I can see why they'd try again :D

The entire reason to do remakes (artistically speaking) is when you can do it BETTER than the original. You don't remake classics just because people liked the original, which the execs don't seem to understand. I'm not against remakes, but they need to take movies that COULD have been great and make a new movie that does the material justice.

For a relatively recent example, take the Ninth Gate. Shithole of a movie that has very little to do with the EXCELLENT book it was based on, The Club Dumas. I'd like to see a remake that actually makes a good movie lol

I think it's sad that they feel the need to remake excellent foreign language films. Let the Right One In/Let Me In and the Girl with the Dragon Tattoo - did we really need to avoid subtitles THAT much? I haven't seen the original Dragon Tattoo yet because I read the book and wasn't blown away by it, but it doesn't seem like it was some low budget stinker that they needed to fix.

I can't remember who it was...Spielberg I think...who was asked if he would remake such and such movie. And he said no because he couldn't do it better today - technology doesn't allow him to do more with it than he did in the original so there would be no point to it.

People in Hollywood need to learn to spend their money more wiself. Nuff said.

I personally feel remakes suck! There are some films that can be better than the original film but that is very rare.

A few AWFUL remakes are the following:
  • A Nightmare on Elm Street
  • Halloween
  • Conan The Barbarian
  • Prom Night
  • Black Christmas
  • Superman
  • Fame
  • Arthur
  • Bewitched

Now, a few of the good remakes are the following:
  • The Wolfman
  • City of Angels
  • The Italian Job
  • Friday the 13th
  • The Stepfather
  • Clash of the Titans

I think a lot of directors and writers try too hard. It's like they have to be over the top with graphics, acting, blood and gore, etc. It just ruins the movie in my opinion, and makes the viewer angry that they wasted their time on such crap expecting to see something decent or even great.

I have heard really good things about the Fright Night remake. I have not seen it myself yet but it is on my list.

My current debate is whether to go and see 21 Jump Street. I adored the TV show and have the boxsets. I don't like the fact that they have made it a buddy cop movie. If you were going to do that then make it a movie in its own right. Don't rip off a classic tv show in the process!

I've still not seen it but that will probably be the case. I was lucky enough to see him on stage with Catherine Tate in Much Ado. The man can do no wrong.
