America isn't a corporation

-----------------------

Our country IS under assault...but I don't think its necessarily the new boogeyman aka "terrorist" that the right harps on. I think its from an enemy within...these corporations who lack any kind of sense of moral/civic responsibility these days & only care about their bottom line @ the expense of workers & consumers in the country that made their success possible.

one of MY favorite parts:

"Most relevant for our current situation, however, is the point that even giant corporations sell the great bulk of what they produce to other people, not to their own employees — whereas even small countries sell most of what they produce to themselves, and big countries like America are overwhelmingly their own main customers.

Yes, there’s a global economy. But six out of seven American workers are employed in service industries, which are largely insulated from international competition, and even our manufacturers sell much of their production to the domestic market."

what are YOUR thoughts?

Holy shit Paul Krugman?! I didn't know that guy was still alive lol

Well I'm no fan of Romney, but there is something to be said for cutting waste. I mean, the fact that the word bureaucracy means what it does today shows we need that to happen. And Paul does have some interest in saying officials should leave the economy to the economists ;)

I think he's right about the country not being like a business, but that doesn't mean that some of the same principles don't apply. I think it's less like trying to "maximize corporate profits" as he says and more trying to grow a small or family business, where you want steady growth not something you can up the price on just to sell it.

It's not that cuts are bad - they are needed - we just need someone who will cut the right things. Like I mentioned before that article that distinguished between "wants" and "needs".

I respect Krugman as an economist, but he's very biased even in that article so I'm not going to take what he says without a grain of salt. Yes, ruthless business practices without care for who it affects is not going to help the country BUT a willingness to really do the work to make a sensible budget and spend the money on the right things IS needed and a business mind might be beneficial to that. Because if you think about politicians (on both sides), they are beholden to a lot of people: PACs, lobbyists, investors. Someone who is thinking of the bottom line rather than how he can stay in office and pleasing the people who got him there WOULD be a good thing if we could get it.

AGAIN I do NOT like Romney and I'm NOT saying he's that person, just that the idea of someone who isn't a politician running the country isn't as far-fetched an idea as Krugman makes it sound.
