ABC DAYTIME SHAKEUP: Network Cancels BOTH 'All My Children' & 'One Life To Live,' Replaces Them With Lifestyle Series

It is a sad day for daytime soap fans. After relentless speculation over the past couple of months that ABC will cancel at least one of its 3 daytime dramas, the network today announced it will cancel both All My Children and One Life to Live. All My Children will end its 41-year run in September, One Life to Live will bow out in January after 43 years.

WOW :( I watched AMC at various times in my life with my mother and aunt as a little girl and later as a teen/young adult in the 90s. even if you dont really get into soaps EVERYONE knows who Susan Lucci/Erika Kane is. This is really sad. And the shows they're being replaced with sound LAME. Worse...they're taking SOAPnet away too :( replacing it with fucking "Disney Jr." maybe if they'd stop putting wack ass shows like "one tree hill" in the line up and kept it filled with TRUE Day (and evening) time soaps that wouldnt have happened.

Soaps are too expensive vs. profit. With women outside the home, the ad revenue does not justify it.

I take no joy in them going as I myself watched them as a child with whoever my caretaker at the time was. But times have changed.

WOW. WOW. I knew that AMC and OLTL were in danger, but I never actually thought they'd cancel BOTH of them, and so soon. GH is in major danger, that's for sure. :(

This is very sad. :(

im very upset about this. AMC...i mean yes I'm known for my fandom of CBS and the Bell family soaps (B&B and Y&R) but I also enjoyed AMC. I have memories of it as a child and then watching it in the 90s when it was truly on fire with people like Sarah Michele Gellar and Michael Nader and of course the queen of AMC Susan Lucci.

Im upset because a) what will become of daytime tv? the shit they plan to replace this with?? based on what i'm seeing around the net, blogs, everywhere folks are not happy at all about this. and why did they have to take SOAPnet away? why not let THAT be the place for AMC to go and turn it back into what it was supposed to be ...a 24 hr. Soap channel for ALL soaps...day AND night time ...old and current.

this is what happens when all our media is being gobbled up by a handful of conglomerates- Disney, Warner Bros. Viacom, Koch Industries and one other I cant think of atm.

this isnt about viewers...because if it were, it wouldnt be happening. They pay that asanine, no talent HACK Snooki (and the rest of the cast) on Jersey Shore $100,000 PER EPISODE! AMC has been on the air for DECADES and soaps in general are an american tradition and pop culture staple! like i said, even if you're NOT terribly into soaps...you know who Susan Lucci/Erika Kane (AMC) is & she's listed in the guiness book of world records; you know about "Luke and Laura" (GH); you know about Sally Spectra/Darlene Conley(B&B)- and to date Sally Spectra is the ONLY soap character to be immortalized in wax figure at madame toussade's (sp) house of wax in LA; you know about Kim Zimmer/Reva Shane(GL) ETC.

I read that Anne Sweeney, the president of ABC wanted to get rid of all 3 soaps, but some how GH dodged the bullet. They already have the shows that they're replacing AMC and OLTL with. One's called The Chew based on healthy eating or something like that, and the other is Revelation [or Revolution, can't remember] which is about lifestyle changes. It's bullshit.

I understand that in this day and age, producing a soap can be extremely expensive. But common. They should have kept SoapNet and moved them onto there. Or at least done what Guilding Light did and give the shows at least 1 more full year to really get some good closing storylines. I mean Christ, they are shutting AMC down in September, that's not even 6 months notice! OLTL stops in January.

Ugh, i'm just really blown away. I honestly never thought i'd see the day where the soaps that I grew up watching with my mom during summer breaks would be gone. The only one I have left is General Hospital, which is *MY* soap....once they cancel that, I don't even know what i'd do. That soap has gotten me through a lot of stuff in my life. It was the constant when things were chaotic. The THOUGHT of it being canceled makes me upset. :(

massive fight underway

so- after a massive outcry and coordinated effort, fans have managed to persuade Hoover to pull its sponsorship from ABC. That sent shockwaves as the media reported on it. Now Hershey's and Excedrin are on the verge of following suit. Rosie O'Donnell has been giving a voice to 1000's of fans on her satellite radio show & fans of other soaps (like me) have been supporting the fight as well. ABC reports that for every phone line they shut down/is overloaded with fan calls/complaints...fans use fb and twitter to publish more contact info. people are emailing abc and sponsors as well. Disney is now felling the wrath directly. ABC ratings are plummeting and a boycott list for sponsors who dont respond or ENDORSE the cancellation of the soaps is being circulated. a petition whose original goal was 2000 sigs wound up getting 20K in just a 4 days and was sent to Disney, ABC, Brian Frons and Anne Sweeney.

Rachel Ray, who has been ENDORSING the cancellation of the soaps- citing she "has friends that will be on the new cooking show 'The Chew'" was ordered to stop talking about the situation on her show all together as her ratings plummeted due to her now being on theboycott list.

This is AMAZING! it shows that we CAN fight back against conglomerates like Disney and we're making headway!

I just wanted to share this with you all because I have been taking time out of my day to join in the call/email efforts of the various sponsors. Apparently the effort is being coordinate simultaneously on FB and Twitter by several young women and two men. A few of these people are younger than me! so that's proof that soaps arent just for older people.

I can't believe Rachael Ray was THAT stupid lol

But it is great to see fan outcry being acknowledged - we'll see if gets any results though. I hope so.

I've been signing petitions and emailing, so it's great to hear that is' actually making an impact. I also know that fans have been reaching out to the OWN network in hopes that if ABC continues forward with the cancellation, that OWN will pick up the soaps.

I'm crossing my fingers that we're able to do something about this. This is an end of a legacy and one step closer to the end of soaps all together.

forget about that. Oprah made a very condescending and shockingly insensitive statement tonight about that. She will not "be taking responsibility" for AMC or OLTL. The things she cited as her justification made her sound more like an arrogant, out of touch exec on par w/ Brian Frons or Anne Sweeney than the woman who just 2 decades ago was strugling to find a studio to give HER fledgling show a chance.

I cant be mad at Oprah for choosing not to take on the soaps if she doesnt want to but the way she went about stating her reasons and not so subtlely ENDORSING Frons & Sweeney's actions was very shocking. I've just lost ALOT of respect for this woman. The same woman who once said on her network show "i love daytime soaps!"

Yeah, I read her statements on twitter and I couldn't believe how bitchy she sounded. Just this season she had Susan Lucci, Tony Geary, Genie Francis, and a bunch of other soap stars on her show for their most memorable soaps episode. What a load of shit. Vil's right. She likes them when it suits her.

And I find it funny how she said that no ones home to watch soaps....really? Then who the hell is watching your show? Here's to hoping for another network to pick them up.

I can understand why you guys are upset with the soaps being gone, but to be mad at Oprah is misplaced.

Her job as an executive is to make money. Soaps pay too much to too many actors and get inadequate ratings to support them, especially comapred to other shows on in the daytime. It will result in shittier shows on in the daytime, but unfortunately our country values profits over quality. Even Oprah is not immune.

The REAL shame in my eyes is that soaps were often a training and proving ground for really GREAT actors. It bother me that the next Morgan Freeman, for example, may not get the experience and exposure needed to be the actor he or she could be.

I'm not upset because she's not picking up the soaps on her network Garrick, i'm more upset at the way she decided to handle the situation. She could have come off a little more sympathetic and respectful to the soap fans instead of coming off as a snobby bitch.

Update on some things.

I've been reading that soap fans are boycotting all ABC primetime shows in an effort to show their displeasure of the soaps being canceled. Certain shows like DWTS, Grey's Anatomy, and Desperate Housewives are looking to be effected by it says some sources, which is particularly bad for the primetime dramas that are currently looking for some big ratings for their season finale shows.

Also, soap fans who can't watch General Hospital at home because of work and school are DVRing the soap now in an effort to boost GH's ratings to help save the soap from cancellation, and also to show that people want to keep their soaps on the air. However, a tidbit if you decide to DVR. Keep your DVR on when you are taping the show if you decide to shut off your tv otherwise it won't register under the Neilson Ratings. My DVR is already programed to do that, so i'm not sure how other DVR's work.

Anyway, just thought i'd share what I read today. :)

same here. i really didnt believe she WOULD 'rescue' the soaps even though her OWN isnt making the big splash everyone speculated it would and having those soaps would guarantee her an estimated 2.3 million viewers at LEAST according to one report.

like Sam, i was just put off by the way she responded to the fans reaching out to her. she was cold, abrupt and bitchy as hell. not to mention a total hypocrate having gushed many a time about how she "LOVES her daytime drama" and "LOVES AMC" and like Sam said even had Susan Lucci and others on there for a big ol soap love fest.

She brought up some figures (which werent even researched) about why soaps cost too much and yet , as someone else pointed out...though AMC may cost anywhere from 750k to just over 1mil to make....consider that the entire cast of FRIENDS was being paid over 1mil EACH PER EPISODE at their peak! and now the cast of Jersey Shore is making 100k EACH PER EPISODE on TOP of all the other costs involved. Even THAT is well beyond what goes into making a soap.

How fucked up is it that a show like Jersey Shore that is about NOTHING and pays people who have NO FUCKING TALENT! (did you know they paid SNOOKI more than they paid TONI MORRISON to speak to college students at Harvard!? )

Oprah was dismissive, bitchy and definately showed how out of touch she is. She's forgotten what it is to need the support of a studio, network or fans because she's become an industry unto herself.

I read today that ratings across the board for ABC are down at least by 13%; Brian Frons is in hot water and ive read blurbs that NBC is looking into taking AMC and OLTL. Meanwhile the fan fight isnt stopping. Hoover has listend and pulled from ABC. Hershey's is on the verge and Excedrine and Neutragena are listening to the fans complaints as well. the ABC.com server has been down due to 100,000's of emailed complaints being sent in daily. and the media is talking about it. Rosie O'donnel opened her phone lines to the fans to discuss it.
